I've got a Trail bike, a Bird aether 9a.
It's got a 150 fork and 130 shock. I've got a rockshox super deluxe ultimate at my shock. I weigh about 210lb.
I've been riding a bit of every including park (not big jumps).

My birthday is coming up soon and thinking of putting a shock on it. Maybe cane creek dbcoil il. It's pretty light and not too expensive.

How easy will it bottom out, as its only got a 130 travel shock? I've heard the progressive springs are pretty good.

Is it worth putting a coil on a Trail bike?
What's your experience on a coil on a Trail bike.?

I could put a megneg on it instead and see from there.

Cheers

What do you want from a shock that you're not currently getting?

Take a look here for the Spring you'll need. I'd ask Bird themselves about a progressive spring and the effect it may have.

bottoming out depends on the leverage ratio of the bike which is pretty good on the Aether. Why do you want a coil? Wouldn't bother with the megneg. I would consider the tractive tune before a coil for the super deluxe

On the AM9 at least, coil is better than a Megneg (from my riding perspective at least).

If you're not already on the Bird FB group join and ask there, plenty of input. Good chance you won't need a progressive coil also..

Yes. Do it.

Had a coil on my jeffsy for a while now, it's brilliant.

I've a cane creek double barrel coil on my geometron.

It is 137mm travel.

It's been great, it's noticably nicer to ride on anything rough.

Is that a G13, @tall_martin?

What length/stroke is it? What spring are you on?(and how heavy are you?)

I have a Canyon Strive which i've coiled and absolutely love.
My mate has what I believe is a Bird Aeris AM9 and he has coiled it with great success.
He spoke to Bird directly so i'd drop them a line and seek advice from them.

J-Tech Suspension are also worth contacting if you need help looking into how coilable your bike is.

Cane Creek IL Coil on my Norco Range was a big improvement with no weight penalty. Linear or progressive spring depends on geometry - I didn’t need a progressive spring for the Norco. This info should be easy to find out from Bird or someone on here.

Linear or progressive spring depends on geometry

Depends more on the frame's suspension kinematic.

Progressive is awesome on my Radon Swoop, and I've heard good things about Oranges. As someone else said, possibly not needed on a Bird as their bikes are apparently fairly progressive anyway.

Aether 9 will be fine with a coil - doesn’t need a progressive spring.

I’ve actually got a spare Fox Factory DHX2 with the right eye to eye / stroke and hardware for your Aether. I had it on an Aether 7 I sold as I fancied trying a 29er. My plan was to buy an Aether 9 / 9C but typically they were out of stock in my size for months. Bought something that has a trunnion mount and different eye to eye / stroke (Transition Sentinel).

Prior to the coil I had a deluxe select + with a Megneg. The coil is definitely better - it had great small bump sensitivity and it held up better in the mid range.

As it has lsc / hsc and lsr / hsr adjustments you can get it perfect.

Mine has a bearing mount at the rear and bushing front. I was running it with a cane creek Valt spring - got 400lbs and 450lbs.

If you’re interested let me know - I’m happy to courier it etc. It was bought April 2021 so it’s not had much use. Think it was £760 new - it’s top of the Fox range. Probably sell it with 1 spring for something like £400 plus postage.

I recently put a megneg on my A9c. Just a bog standard deluxe select+ otherwise (what was available at not silly money back in April).

TBH I wasn’t unhappy with the select+, cos I am old crap and slow, but I picked up the megneg for £65 when a 50hr service was due anyway.

Everyone seems to say a coil is better still, but I like the bump in performance so far. It seems more linear at top and middle - more supple around the sag point but also doesn’t sink/wallow as much in the middle of the stroke. Probably a touch more ramp up too. 2 bands currently.

I need to get some more rides in to asses properly - too much life going on lately.

Megneg was definitely an upgrade on the standard shock - as you say it wallowed less into its mid range - particularly on steep climbs and sharp compressions.

Coil is another level again though - the support through the mid range is better whilst still keeping small bump plushness. I got faster both on technical uphills and all downhills interestingly.

Hmmm, thumbies.

So, coming for the inaugural ride then?

Good lord no, we don't actually ride our bikes, we just stand around and talk about them.

By the way, that FSA crank you bought? I heard they snap.
Shut up!

😁

What weight springs do you have Joe? I’m interested at C.£400 as it work out similar to a lesser shock plus spring if bought new.
Can meet you in bristol to save posting.

@honourablegeorge

Yes it's a g13.

It's the old ccdb shock before the climb switch.

It's 190mmx 50mm same as the air shock it came with. I tried a 200mmx 57mm to increase the travel from 137mm to 15?mm. It rained the BB and made it feel weird.

I'm 90kg in my socks and i think it's a 600 spring. It was what ever the tf tuned calculator recommended. It came with 450,500 and 550 springs, the 550 was super soft for me.

Had the Cane Creek one on my Aether 9a.

I ran it for a bit, but it developed a knocking/rattle quite quickly. Bird swapped it for a Deluxe Ultimate air shock for me as I just prefer the flexibility of air.

It actually rode really well on a coil though! Tons of grip up and down, still pedalled great too.

For me it really stood out getting up rough/techy climbs. Where other bikes have spun a wheel, this one just tracked the ground and most of the time my legs gave out before the tyres did.

I tried a coil shock on my Jeffsy and later swapped frames to a Sentiel with an air shock (Float x2). Told myself I’d keep the air shock for a while but somehow ended up buying the first correct sized Öhlins coil I saw come available on eBay.

The air shock was good but the coil is great and that’s with the stock tune. It’s off to J Tech in the new year for a custom tune.

Try it, I don’t think you’ll regret it.

A few reviews online have referenced the db coil il developing a knock quite quickly. Various forums have threads on it too - seems it’s something to do with the oil passing by the climb switch. Tolerances aren’t always quite on is the theory and it causes the knock as a result.

G13's are 130mmm travel with standard length shock.
148 if you long shock them.
