People who confuse not understanding something with not liking something.
Why do people DO that?!?
My washing up bowl uses way less water than using the sink.
I don’t understand people who love doing laundry, I know it’s a necessity but some people love it. I’ve run out of pants so that kinda forces my hand but I have friends who do it every day... through choice!
I totally get Lycra - by far the most comfortable thing to wear on any bike.
But bib-shorts? Normal Lycra shorts are perfectly comfortable. When riding, I try to work out how something more expensive and heavier with inconvenient straps over my shoulders could possibly be an improvement. My clothes fit properly, so I've never exposed flesh between shorts and jersey. Sure, maybe the waistband could be uncomfortable for the 'larger' cyclist - but that doesn't explain why the pro-peloton wear them.
Women who have completely ruined their eyebrows thinking they can do a better job than nature. Why?!
Ooh! That's a good one, sometimes I find it very hard not to stare at the ridiculous doodlings half way up some ones forehead. I'm sure some women must user a bingo dabber.
Thing I "don't get" is people saying they don't get other people littering/being a selfish person.
What you mean is you don't like it. Littering is easy "to get" : People can't be arsed to take home their crap/think it's some-one else's job to tidy up after them. It's easy to understand.
I "don't get " folk who aren't curious. Stuff that I don't know anything about is mostly instantly fascinating to me.
I don't get folk who's black and white views of the world are so entrenched, they cannot see or accept grey.
People who give a shit about what other people ride or what other people wear when they are riding.
I've never understood this about (particularly) mountain bikers. IME, road cyclists don't give a hoot what sort of bike you are on or whether you are in full branded lycra, club kit or casual wear - it's all about the ride and if you can do the ride, that's what matters.
(feel free to throw abuse at me on this!)
People who don’t use the edit function to correct their typo’s
People who don’t understand apostrophes.
Touché! I was a little unsure but went with it as an abbreviation of typographical rather than a plural.
Although I'm surprised that triggered a response and not my previous trolling about 'camper vans' 😄
The one I really do not get ( like cynic al) consumerism in general...I don’t think I have a single bike part that is less than ten years old ( bar consumables) ( a couple of rims – but to me they are consumables)
I don't get folk who invent rules for themselves and go about busily breaking them. A translation of this could read, I don't like other people's consumerism, but when it's my consumerism, I like it just fine and I want it to exist. There's a word for it that's on the tip of my tongue....
Consumerism + littering are so intertwined they may as well be the same thing.
Reducing consumerism by re-using parts you already own and/or buying second hand parts or pulling parts from skips or dumps is a reduction in consumerism + littering.
Consumerism encourages unthinking purchases bought on the whim.
I don't get why there isn't a single button to take you back to the forums page or the end of a thread. It's like the lovely folks that write the code for this forum don't actually use it
Currently (although this changes on a daily basis):
Stampede mentality - see Sales/being able to go to the beach/the slightest sniff of a lift of lockdown measures
Managers who have no managerial skills other than wanting to be paid a little more than everyone else and still somehow manage to keep their job
Going for a walk in the countryside and spending all your time on the phone
****ty car drivers who have to be that little bit faster/more aggressive than everyone else
People just generally being dicks to other people in the name of "I am better than you"
People who don't understand how to use leaf blowers, but don't worry, it's ok to admit some things are just beyond you 😉
I don’t get why there isn’t a single button to take you back to the forums page or the end of a thread. It’s like the lovely folks that write the code for this forum don’t actually use it
And the "Forum" selection in the nav, please add a hover to let you choose which forum you want to go to. There a few problems on this site regarding unnecessary clicking to get somewhere.......but then I guess there's a thread for that
I don't get it that there is no way to "like" other peoples sometimes quite amusing posts.
People who develop a frothing irrational love of a professional sports team (usually football, at least in UK).
Liking a sport, yes, watching it played well professionally, yes, picking a favourite team and being happy when they win, yes.
Getting into physical or verbal fights with strangers based on their rival team allegiances, and being ""X" till I die" when the team is full of foreign mercenaries who will switch to their rival next year for a bigger paycheck. No. Just why?
People who enjoy "bimbling".
You could give all your money away and report back on how free you felt?
Not really. I don’t have any spare after bills etc. So technically I already ****ing give it all away to various companies. I understand how it works and get we have it. I just don’t get the insane pursuit of it.
People who enjoy “bimbling”.
On the road bike, every ride we do seems to be a balls-out smash fest with (typically) me struggling to hang on at every climb, but last week me and the boy did a much longer ride than normal, so we set out at a steadier pace than we'd normally go and rode the first 30-odd miles to the first climb at a sedate, social pace....and you know what? It was refreshingly enjoyable! We could chat as we rode along, enjoyed some beautiful Yorkshire scenery and when we reached the first climb, planning to have a quick coffee stop at Kettlewell before we headed up, we were both completely unfatigued and mutually agreed to keep going instead.
Sometimes you need to bimble to appreciate why we ride bikes and I'm now planning a few more bimbles for this summer...

I wouldn't call pacing yourself for a longer ride a bimble.
But if I just wanted some fresh air and some alone time (or time alone with a chosen friend or relative) I find a walk to be much more pleasant, relaxing and faff-free.
The increasing prevalence of lad culture in cycling/mtbing. It can GTF quite frankly.
I'm not trying to cause an argument, but I'm the other way. I don't get the march towards navel gazing, beige, excitement free society. I mean what's so bad about being a Lad? Where's the harm?
Not really. I don’t have any spare after bills etc. So technically I already **** give it all away to various companies. I understand how it works and get we have it. I just don’t get the insane pursuit of it.
It's human nature to be competitive, in fact it was an evolutionary necessity when we were just another animal on Earth.
We compete for our trinkets to show how much better we are at doing so than our friends and neighbours, Brits are possibly only second to the Yanks in that respect.
I think the biggest mistake Humans make is thinking that we're entirely logical beings, we might have some control over our minds, but our desires are all driven by chemical reactions and it drives us to do all kinds of things.
Take Population Growth
+1 littering
+1 fake eyebrows
(I'm no dog-man but I get why some people like/need them)
(I don't follow/support football but I understand the tribal mentality)
what’s so bad
about being a Lad?
Where’s the harm
in breaking the calm?
How's it wrong
to ummm... not know how to finish the song?
Ooh, there's loads I don't get in the real world, but how about a couple of forum based things that totally baffle me!
1. People who get all upset and defensive/aggressive because someone else has a different opinion from them! It's mad! There are almost as many different opinions as there are people and yet you (yes you, you know who you are) go mad if someone doesn't like what you like. Hilarious really.
2. People who post to say "if you don't care about such n such why did you post?" Well, so people know I don't care about such n such! And all YOU'VE done is post about my post, how is that any more worthwhile?!
3. Me (but that's real world(ish))
4. You (that too)
It’s human nature to be competitive, in fact it was an evolutionary necessity when we were just another animal on Earth.
I don't get people who don't keep up with current research
I don’t get people who don’t keep up with current research
What, all research, on everything? Who's got the time?
Anyway...
I don't get 'Going to the Beach' I think it was one of those things the Victorians invented (although I'll admit not reading all the latest research on that particular subject).
I know other people (most it seems) love it, I've always hated it and whenever it comes up in conversation this little scene plays out in my head in an alternative reality when someone who is unfamiliar with the concept asks about it.
"So here's the thing, you go to the edge of the land, there's all this grit on the floor, you can lay on it"
"Okay, but why?"
"It's nice"
"Really? I don't like grit much"
"Ah but this is special grit, it's sort of yellow instead of grey"
"okay, so what else can I do?"
"There's a great view!"
"Oh I love a great view, what can you see"
"Ah, funny you should ask, you can see, the sea!"
"Brilliant, what else?
"Nothing, well apart from the grit"
"Okay, so it's laying in grit, staring out at the horizon"
"Yep, you can swim if you like"
"Brilliant, what's it like?"
"Well. It's like swimming in a lake or pool, apart from the water will make you gag, and there's a small chance the tide might kill you"
"Well, the small chance of death is always exciting, it's a bit cold and windy most of the time here, I'm not sure I want to lay in grit, looking at the sea when it's a but cold and windy"
"Well you're in luck, because if you pay me some money, I'll arrange for you to spend a few hours in a Plane to go to another beach that's more likely to be warm and sunny"
"It won't be too warm will it?"
"Probably"
"Much shade at the beach?"
"Yes! If you pay for it"
"Okay, I've heard too much sun is dangerous, can anything be done?"
"Of course, we've really thought this through, here's this special oil that stops most of it getting to your skin."
"Hang on, so let me get this right, you want me to pay you to fly on a plane, cover myself in oil and than roll in grit, you're taking the mick now aren't you?"
"No, I'm completely serious, you'll love it, five thousand pounds for you and your family please"
"Wow, that's a lot of money, well I suppose I'll get some peace and quiet"
"Oh, not a chance, it will be completely and utter rammed full of other people doing the same!"
"This is madness isn't it!?"
"Oh, yes, but everyone does it, you don't want to be left out do you?"
I don’t get people who don’t keep up with current research
How many peer-reviewed articles do you read per day? According to Wikipedia, the Scopus database
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scopus
Includes over 20 000 active journals. They will typically publish four or more issues per year, so that's about 100 000 issues, so that's in the ballpark of a million articles per year, so something like 20 to 50 million pages. Per year. From one database.
Scopus is Elsevier’s abstract and citation database launched in 2004. Scopus covers nearly 36,377 titles (22,794 active titles and 13,583 inactive titles) from approximately 11,678 publishers, of which 34,346 are peer-reviewed journals in top-level subject fields: life sciences, social sciences, physical sciences and health sciences. It covers three types of sources: book series, journals, and trade journals. All journals covered in the Scopus database, regardless of who they are published under, are reviewed each year to ensure high quality standards are maintained. Searches in Scopus also incorporate searches of patent databases.[1] Scopus gives four types of quality measure for each title; those are h-Index, CiteScore, SJR (SCImago Journal Rank) and SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper).

I don’t get the recent (and widespread) prevalence of ‘either/or’ setups based upon extreme stereotypes 😎
I don’t get ‘Going to the Beach’ I think it was one of those things the Victorians invented
I can have fun on a beach. Not a packed one though. Let me make a tit of myself doing some sort of water sports badly, I'm game. An outdoor stroll with sand between your toes, definitely. Beer and a view on a summers evening, yes.
I don't get sitting and doing nothing for leisure.
Be it beach, park, spa, hotel room etc.
Hope anodised purple, orange and red bits. It looks bloody awful when fitted and even worse when it starts to fade.
Shopping as a leisure activity. No thank you.
Don't understand why so many modern trails have just become super long jump tracks, where slick tyres and rock hard suspension are the order of the day.
"Don’t understand why so many modern trails centres"
FTFY
Why a lot of drivers, that kill other road users through their dangerous driving, don't get a lifetime driving ban.
I get how people confuse ‘I don’t enjoy doing that’ with ‘I don't get people who enjoy doing that’
But I don’t get how they don’t get the fact that they are confusing the two.
ie I never got the same enjoyment from (say) swimming as other people who enjoyed swimming. But I think I understood got why people might enjoy it. And I certainly didn’t ‘not get the people’ (who enjoyed swimming). They were and are (of course) individuals with other qualities other than ‘enjoys swimming’. I hope I get that. Unless they are some kind of hyoerfocus 24/7 swimbeast with no discernible human-qualities that I could begin to understand/connect with. (Think ‘coder‘, but an aquatic version)
Coming to swimming later in life, I do actually now enjoy swimming. It’s arguably the one thing that C19 has taken away that has had the biggest effect on my mental-health. Prior to lockdown it was my go-to 45 min workout. The sounds, the rhythm, the focus, even the smell of the chlorine and shower gel. It was meditational.
Similar deal with bimbling 😎 (ie just go exploring, relax, pedal, head held high, swooping down country lanes along hedgerows matching the speed of hedge-sparrows and yellowhammers, maybe a tune on the ipod, sun on leather and steel, peanut butter sarnie and water stop on the Common or by a stream, lie back and watch the buzzard wheeling above? No rush to anywhere other than here and now. Argh, how can someone not even once enjoy this? Adrenalin-addiction? Frustrated cliff-jumper on a bike?
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

What you mean is you don’t like it. Littering is easy “to get” : People can’t be arsed to take home their crap/think it’s some-one else’s job to tidy up after them. It’s easy to understand.
The function of littering maybe easy to understand, but the mentality of actually doing it, is not!
Another one for me is stupidly loud cars or motorbikes. ****s!
“Hang on, so let me get this right, you want me to pay you to fly on a plane, cover myself in oil and than roll in grit, you’re taking the mick now aren’t you?”

Sounds pretty perfect!
Foot-fetishism? I mean, what the holyhell? And - USED-SHOE FETISHISM?? ARGH!!!?
Remember about 15 years back was trying to find a bargain on some NIB/seconds running-shoes on ebay back in the days when category was either ‘new’ or ‘used’.
I kept seeing listings (from one particular seller) of utterly minging training-shoes along with description of wearer (ie ‘230lb builder‘) , and they’d go for ridiculous sums. Penny took a short while to drop.

Oh well played, excellent.
Real Ale. Looks, smells and tastes like fermented pond water. Sometimes it even has mud at the bottom.
The love of the picolax thread. It was funny at the time as it played out I'm sure but after that not so much
Vanilla people feeling the need to slate fans of coloured anodised bits.
People biking since the 90's who still can't jump, manual or bunnyhop over a medium sized log.
People getting offended because they match both of the above 🙂.
Why stanchions, rims and spokes are mostly black these days.
The need for plus tyres.
Competitive over money I do not get. Nor clearly does a significant portion of society. I just don't care. To me I win when I have fun not from collecting stuff. I feel sorry for those who work long hours for money to buy toys that they then have no time to enjoy.
I think this links into bimbling. I'd rather a day off work to wander around the countryside on my old bike than work overtime to buy a new bike.
Real Ale. Looks, smells and tastes like fermented pond water. Sometimes it even has mud at the bottom*.
On a par with the Koppaberg/Magners/Stella Cidre-drinker who claims the same of real cider.
Or the Kraft cheese-slices fan who turns his nose up at real cheese because it ‘Smells, and has scaley bits, and tastes like dead feet. Sometimes even has fungus on it!’**
* As someone who has helped make real ale (commercially) - you don’t get to fob pond-water and sediment off onto paying customers. Not if you want to keep a business 🤣 That’s bad home-brewing you’re talking about. You might get away with such for a little while if you have a captive-market hovelpub deal somewhere out in the sticks with a barely-functioning alcoholic clientele! But that’s neither a real business, nor a ‘real ale‘.
**By design.
And I don’t want a bloody argument! Facts is facts 😎

Bike industry's inability to make rim and tyres that work together without a lot of swearing and risk of a hernia, I haven't got a prayer of fixing a trailside puncture without damaging something. Never had a 26" tyre I couldn't fit n remove bare handed.
GARLIC BREAD ?
People who wash and polish their cars every weekend. Surely there are better things they could be doing on a weekend.
People who get excited by real ale. I can drink the stuff but on a hot day a pint of San Miguel is just better.
27.5 wheels – negligible gains over 26 and well basically not 29
And 27.5 isn't 27.5. it's 26.9
People who get excited by real ale. I can drink the stuff but on a hot day a pint of San Miguel is just better.
^ People who see those two things as necessarily and mutually exclusive
As for people, getting excited by San Miguel (not my choice of a cold lager but any cold lager is better than ale when in a swelter) ...
...a cold cider is just better 😝 i can get excited by iced water on a hot day 😎
As in all things - there’s no accounting for taste!
*edit - looking at my last few posts there is obviously some accounting for my being kept away from beer gardens for the whole of April, May and June 🤪😷.
(Gods, please take me back to 1994, so I can be ready for these last four years next time around...)
I don’t get 2020.
Led Zeppelin, Queen, David Bowie, Nat King Cole and tinned spaghetti.
Those of you that don't get real ale:

I didn't even crack a smile at it, and I usually love a good shitting story
And 27.5 isn’t 27.5. it’s 26.9
No it's not, it's a variable size, entirely dependant on how much rubber you have fitted, but generally is around 27.1 to 27.5.
I don't get tattoos, piercings, man-buns or rap music, but we're all different and, as long as it doesn't cause any trouble, then folks can just get on with it.
I'm pretty sure there are a load of people who don't "get" bikes in general, never mind the weird sub- niche stuff we get up to.
but we’re all different
I’m not.
Real Ale. Looks, smells and tastes like fermented pond water.
It's good of you to go the extra mile - drinking fermented pond water - so you can make the comparison.
People who bag up their dogs mess and then drop said bag on the ground and leave it! I'm talking about in the middle of no where. Lakes, south downs and so on. I don't believe that they are all coming back to take it home.
Thinner.
Cat owners who don't pick up their pets' poo -- oh, that's all of you! I feel just as annoyed about dog poo but dogs don't shit in my garden, cats DO.
PS It's nice to see that wherever two humans gather, even virtually , each will have a reason for thinking themselves better than the other.

Actually, just add all jewellery to the list - "Caveman like shiny metal pin! Caveman like pretty pebble! Cavemave stick one thru his todger and then put pretty pebbles on hand to impress Gods and ladies."
I mean, FFS. Is it dress-up time? Are you 12?

Things like jewelry, cosmetics, and ornamental clothing seem to be universal to humans all over the world. They indicate that we can imagine how others see us (i.e. theory of mind) and are trying to shape that. My guess is that the ladies with garish make-up, cosmetic surgery, high-heels etc. probably decide in the blink of an eye that you're not worth wasting their time on anyway.
I don’t get why people don’t wear Lycra on an MTB
Clearly not seen my skinny shock white legs. And I have to be harsh and say I'm not alone there 😯
1x anything. Bikes have had perfectly functional 3x and 2x setups for decades now - they work well, they offer an incredibly useful range of gears and so on. So how is taking away a chainring and compensating with dinner plate sized sprockets progress of any sort, or desirable in any way?
Road tubeless, but I think this is less about "getting" it than just not buying into the BS from bikeradar and others that it offers any benefit whatsoever. Even Bikeradar is just owning itself now, with articles saying "road tubeless has finally come of age!", 2 years after it first started saying how amazing it was.

You know, it’s refreshing to hear this. I don’t ‘get’ make up, fake tan, high heels (or false nails) either - and I'm the gender most often associated with the wearing of these things - but sometimes I feel like a different breed, and have spent most of my adult life resisting the subtle pressure to conform.
Not what I usually weigh in on but...
You know, it’s refreshing to hear this. I don’t ‘get’ make up, fake tan, high heels (or false nails) either
I don’t see fake tan or false nails as important. But there’s ‘make-up’ and there’s MAKE-UP!!!!1!!
One is ok and looks great, one has eyebrows halfway up its forehead.
And heels can look great. Without needing to be six inches tall either.
Luckily we’re all different eh.
But false nails. Nope. 😉

Oi - that's a corking book!
Retrobike fans going boggle eyed at bikes that are as crap now as they were BITD.
Kind of agree with nicko74, the ability to pedal at a decent speed towards a climb then drop into a granny ring at the last second, instant climbing gear without making your chain climb up several cogs at the back, also the angle of the chain line at each end of the cassette is far from ideal.

This sums up why difference and choice is great. I have the exact opposite opinion on both points. Two and three rings up front equals lots of gears that need skipping / are surplus. Less faffing with one ring too.
Tubeless in any form means fewer punctures. That’s just a good thing whichever way you cut it.
My sister in law, she's bought designer face masks for her 6, 9 and 11 year old children for their memory boxes.

@tjagain Hobgoblin, now that is a tasty ale! But, I don't get the gold hoppy version or any other of the very hoppy ales that are ultra fashionable at the moment.
Paddle boarding. I can't see the point. Swimming, kayaking, sailing etc yes I get it, but not paddle boarding. I did try it once and it was okay for about 10 minutes, then I got bored.
I'm obviously missing something as lots of folk seem to love it, so I'd genuinely be curious as to what the attraction is.
Jazz music on the other hand I have not the slightest interest in what the attraction is.
Hobgoblin, now that is a tasty ale!
I don’t get it. Especially since Marstons took over and there’s about a handful of different versions. The bottled stuff is not real ale either, AFAIK? Never seen it on tap from a cask so can’t comment on the real stuff. The old boys bemoan it’s demise in cask form (again, since Marstons)
OTOH, not liking Batham’s Best Bitter (from the tap) is something I’ll never get.
Same goes for not liking a perfectly kept crisp (real) ale (Enville Ale, Hobson’s Town Crier, and the king of all - Oracle (Salopian).
Don't even get myself for not planning on risking the Covid bar-queue-gauntlet for a pint or three of of cool cask-conditioned Oracle. I don’t get it. 😢
smh 😔
