You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Went round Swinley blue and red today with my two teenagers. Was the first outing on my new (to me) Ibis Mojo.I learned:
1)
Fat bikes make your technique lazy
I've exclusively used the fat bike since Xmas. Today I rode in a rather lazy way and it didn't work. Most obviously on the two (very) short but sharp climbs. One on the blue the other up to deerstalker. With the fat bike you can pick a gear, any gear, and either spin or grind your way up. Turns out I'm a bit of a grinder and I just wheel span (spinned?) to a halt up to deerstalker. The fat bike would have just munched it
Likewise through Labyrinth - with the fat bike so long as you keep pedalling and point it vaguely in the right direction it'll just keep moving. My lines today left a lot to be desired
2)
I should have bought a 'trail bike' a long time ago. I was much quicker than on my fat bike (unsurprising) or my Anthem. Though my two lads (16 yo twins) were still faster than me (especially down) - the gap was much less
3)
Most galling - Murphy's Law is alive and well
No 1 son rides an Orange 5
No 2 son rides a Nukeproof Mega
I'm on either a fat bike or the Anthem
No 1 son gets a lots of stick - usual light hearted Orange stuff - scaffolding, hear it from a mile away but most if all its ubiquity. Obviously if on the Anthem I get the ubiquity stuff too
I've never seen a Mojo at Swinley. And I didn't see one today either, no, not one
Bloody two of them! And to add insult I was caught by one. To be fair he was about half my age and bloody flying. If it was you (not likely, this us STW!) on the pale blue Mojo my hat is properly doffed!
Great day though, lovely weather and great to be out with my lads
