I'd like to spend my B'day at Afan, which happily coincides with the Easter weekend, so it would be nice to go away for the weekend with my GF, stay in a B&B nd have a good time. Last time I subjected her to Afan though, her response was quite comical.

"Desolate"
"Denuded hillsides"
"Why do people live here?"

I'm thinking that subjecting her to the delights of the carpark and fishponds for another 3 hours is probably not going to go down too well.

So... what could she do to amuse herself for a few hours nearby, while I shred to the radz skillz max gnar woo..?

She likes: pretty countryside and coastlines, short walks, interesting shops, cafes
Doesn't like: economically deprived areas, mountain bike trail centres, scary deserted places.

Drop her off at Margam Park on the way. Its got a big manor house, 2 cafes, a deer park, some ruins of an abbey, gardens etc. Enough to occupy a good few hours. Top tip, the cafe at the farm is way, way better than the one at the house.

It also has short walks, big hills, and a train that goes up and down from the car park.

I was going to say Rhosilli bay but it's too far I think. She could drive down to swansea. Maybe the mumbles and have a bimble about? Maybe even park up at caswell and take a stroll up the coast for a bit.

Edit. What Ben said. Much better idea. Unless it's raining. Then you're screwed.

Also, if she has the car, Bridgend outlet mall is a good, if expensive way for someone that likes shops to spend an afternoon.

And one more thing, if you're from the south east, she'll find the price for visiting Margam Park mildly amusing too. Its peanuts.

I'm impressed to see some useful suggestions - all I could think of was cultivating a drug or alcohol habit, maybe nicking some flash mountain bikes... It's terrible what has happened to those areas of Wales in the last few decades.

They've got hose access at the Glyncorrwyg site. You could take a few bits and get her set up washing the car?

There's a visitor centre down the road which contains a small local mining museum.
They also have a few posters to look at.

Why don't you just go somewhere that is nice for your GF and save Afan for another day?

I took my wife and kids to Afan, I rode and they went off to the Mumbles. They loved it.

If you haven't got your heart set on afan, but want to go to Wales, you could ride Gower and then easier for your gf to mooch around Mumbles. Much more xc-mincer-ville than rad-gnar-tastic but good riding nonetheless
