Hey forum friends,
does anyone KNOW whether a SRAM XX1 12S cassette is actually harder wearing than X01?
I am reliably informed that the X01 x12 chain is as good as XX1 (other than lacking a rainbow finish).
But I just can't find THE definitive WORD on those 2 cassettes.
Some keyboard jockeys hypothesise that the coloured Ti finish on XX1 means its effectively a harder material
Once my OEM GX cassette wears, I'm gonna invest in something harder and longer lasting cos i use the smallest 3 cogs WAY too much as I stand a lot.
thanks (opening a can of worms I'm sure)
From my point of view, it is not the steel section of the cassette that is the issue, but the aluminium largest cog which wears the quickest, and if it is heavily used will dictate the cassette being thrown out before most of the steel section is worn.
Unfortunately in the new Transmission drive train, the 3 largest cogs are now aluminium, so even more chance for premature wear.
Since moving to Sram and their steel cassettes, I'm getting 3 years use out of cassette, chain and chainring. The chain is the main part that is worn, but all 3 get changed at the same time.
Haven't used X01 or XX1 cassette, bu the GX was wearing well - it was worn after 3 years but everything together worked, just not quite as smooth as when new.
I'm running a Garburuk cassette now as when it was needing replaced during the global shortage, this was all I could get my hands on - this is also wearing very well.
Steel cassette, decent quality chain and I only use Squirt wax, but they seem to last very well. Of course depends on how hard you are with gear changes, mileage on the system and how wet and manky the conditions they are used in are.
XX1 (1299) cassette has a Ti Nitride coating on it (in various gold/copper/rainbow colours) which the X01 (1295) does not - so they are supposed to last better.
See the "cons" section below (and hello Neil, btw, hope you're doing well)

If you're wearing out the smallest 3, is it worth considering a larger chain ring if you have clearance and can lose a bottom gear or two?

Is the correct answer.
Sram don't say so no one will have anything more than CONJECTURE on what Is or isNT harder or more pointlessly capitalised.
Onzadog. Yeah thought of that. Kenevo SL OEM chain device only goes to 32 sadly.
HonGeorge. Hi mate. Yeah that’s what I read too. But I’d it true and how much longer I wonder. It’s about £50 more.
Interestingly on XX1 v X01 chain - they are equal (zerofrictioncycling tested) despite the XX1 having Ti Nitride coating .
All good. You too I hope. Getting over the disc herniation that had me on 26 painkillers a day for 6 months and unable to ride for 18 months - I’m gradually regaining left leg function. It’s slow.
Hence the S5 Kenevo SL. It’s pretty close in shape our XLong Geometron G1. But shorter. EXT shock works nice on it.
Loving getting out.
Shred is right about the large alloy cog. I don’t use it much luckily. And you CAN get third party replacements. I’m sure my smallest 3 will wear first. I’m doing my best with hit melt wax and 2 x X01 chains on rotation. Clean (boiling water rinse) and re wax in the slow cooker every wet ride. Yeah OFTEN!!
I've used TiN coated chains for a while. It seems to come off the rollers relatively quickly.
By all means, spend 50 extra for pretty colours but my feeling is that if you do get any 3xtra mileage, it's probably not £50 worth.
