Interesting that Lael's record is stalking Chris Plasko.

Chris is on singlespeed (if you didn't know) as is Kevin Jacobsen in third place.

Chris Piesko is 36miles behind Terry Smith, if Guy snoozes too much he may meet the SS blur.

Sounds like a mech hanger:( . Rollin ss now and people looking for a salsa dealer.

My George Berwick zip tied frame may not be helping but It sounds like he is carrying on.

Not critiscing Greg in any way, but both he and Lee Fancourt in Trans Am reported race ending rear mech hanger failures and the associated trouble in having to SS bike, i think for the sake of a few grams, i'd carry a spare mech hanger? (as said not having a go, as they amaze me with their determination and fitnes)

Very sad news ,more so when you have read and followed all the planning, training and preperation for this ride.
I hope he still gets to the border ,even with some assistance.

tbh scud .

in all my years of riding a bike ive never seen a rear mech hanger fail on its own , usually wipes out any combo of parts of wheels / deraileurs / chain links / cable

Which means where do you stop - do you also take a mech and some spokes ?

Maybe he was carrying a spare mech hanger and it broke already.
I hope greg's got the correct gpx, I know some entrants have had some issues with that this year 😛

Which entrants is that Jekkyl?

I'm in for it next year and I'm already hanging on to every real world experience I can find but part of me is already thinking that the spirit of the race is to just get out there and experience it. Maybe planning too much for every eventuality?

He must have been very unlucky to have a mech issue unless I am misreading the route they are taking. Following Tom it looks predominately fireroad/road, so does anyone know if there is much ST? Mind you with tiredness, a stray stick could jump out of nowhere. Hope he makes it and take it home today Tom 8)

The big potential issue is New Mexico mud. It has a consistency which means you can't ride or even push the bike. Massively blocks everything up. And can easy snap mechs and hangers.

Plus there are some rocky trails on the route in pockets. Especially before Cuba

It's a big part of why the race is in June. To more likely avoid summer thunderstorms down in Colorado and New Mexico. And even wild fires. But of course snow could be lingering up North.

As Steve says.

It was rear mech and some manipulation required.

Things like this were sent to test your mettle and are the story's you remember in years to come

Does anyone know why Rob's tracker says Off Route and doesn't show all the usual details? It looks like he's currently on the route.

Robs "back on track"

CURRENT SPEED: 9.2 mph at route mile 2660.0
LAST REPORT: 04:24:44 AM (MDT) 06/29/16 (7 minutes ago)

Not sure about Rob's tracker - the last 60 miles or so would appear to be on tarmac and there aren't that many roads in the area so it would be hard to go off-route and not realise it.
