Hi, i have some RS Pikes that are currently 130mm. Whats the shortest i can make them, is it 120mm? I have a friend interested in them but he wants a short fork.

Thanks

Ian

29 or 27.5?

DJ Pikes were 100mm.

I think 120mm is your answer.

Pretty sure it's 120mm. They only used to go down to 130mm in the retail versions (with the 120mm spring being aftermarket) but you can actually buy a 120mm version now to cater for the downcountry crowd.

120mm is the shortest you can go without messing around with a lathe.

It'll depend how old they are. Older models are reduced by adding spacers, nothing to stop you adding a load of spacers. More recent ones, you are limited by spring availability (or a bit of machining)

I dropped a set of 27.5 pikes down to about 95mm travel recently using a 100mm solo air spring from the DJ forks

Putting travel spacers in won't necessarily work (without compromised performance) due to the indentation which equalises the positive and negative air springs. The piston on the air shaft needs to be int he right position, so simply putting spacers under the piston messes with this.

One way or another, you need a shorter air shaft.

I can confirm that I have a 120mm air shaft for some 29er pikes, but have not fitted them... Yet ...

I currently have them set at 140mm on a flare max.   I was going to reduce the travel to 120mm to go full "downcounty" but didn't since reducing travel would not make it lighter so did not quite see the point of it.      Was I missing something & should I re consider?

I have some 26" Pikes and was wondering if was possible to take them to 100mm and then sell them for a dirt jump bike. Is this possible, what do folks mean by using a lathe on them?

A drop from 140 to 120 would steepen the seat andle and the head tube angle, both of which should aid climbing.

I went the other way on a Solaris because the stack was too low. Just check that yours won't become too low when you drop 20mm.

Ah thanks, fair points have been made.   This makes sense.   I think this is a case of if it is working for me then leave alone.

@Mugboo assuming they aren't the really old ones (426) then you can drop them down to 100mm by getting the DJ solo air spring. You'll also need a stack of bottomless tokens (think I am running 5 or 6, though I may be wrong)
