i cycled a small section of it last september, and it seemed ok.
is it a busy road?
not many places to head for south of lochgilphead i dont suppose.
We were there a few weeks back, we weren't on that road for too long tbh, but there is a lot of logging activity in the area, so plenty of the demonic wood lorries I'd imagine. We got ferry to Arran, over to Claonaig, then basically followed NCN 78 all the way to Fort william,really enjoyed it. The cycle route goes a bit out the way, but going round knapdale is well worth it for the views over to Jura etc.
Lochgilphead - I expected a quiet wee place. The Marina inn - Milffest! 😯
we will be staying in a posh hotel near Arduaine, so will be using the main road from Oban to there, and the from the hotel to Kilmartin, on the main road the next day.
we will be riding Knapdale.
I've done it on a motorcycle many times and although it's not the busiest, it is a very fast road with lots of slow moving traffic on it and only some sections are suitable for overtaking due to poor visibility etc. Personally it's not one I'd like to cycle.
I've driven the [b]A816[/b] a few times. There are certainly some bendy bits but it wouldn't put me off cycling it. In fact, I'll likely be doing so later this year. Kilmelford/Kilmartin is a lovely bit of the country and it's a wee bit of a shame that the NCN route avoids it.
it will be in late september after the school holidays. fingers crossed it wont be too busy.
You won't see many cars, but they will be doing 75mph+
They won't be looking out for cyclists, but might be looking for sheep. Best dress up as a sheep.
