I'm looking to build up a bike for audaxing (doesn't have to be an "audax" bike) and the want list for the frame is as follows:
- preferably steel but open to aluminium if it's not too stiff
- drop bar
- not heavy
- not 1" steerer
- disc compatible, mudguard eyelets, rack mounts
- not too relaxed geometry
- 700c; clearance for >28 tyres
- budget <£500 for frame

I think the Genesis Equilibrium fits the bill - anything else?
Maybe a lesser known brand i.e. not Ridgeback, Raleigh, Kona, Surly, etc.

Steel ain't light.

Chainstays a bit short on Eq disc. Do Salsa do anything?

I had one and a Vaya, now run a CAADX

and the Vaya too Al, hadn't thought of them - bit on the pricey side.

I can fit 30 mm tyres in my equilibrium disc so the stays are not short. There is even room for mudguards still.

I have the ti version and the whole bike I have built is 9 kg. I have built a few steel bike with mudguards and they weigh about 10.7 kg with 28mm gatorskin hardshell tyres or schwable one 28mm tubeless tyres.

I train on a bike which weighs about 11 kg and I get up hills just fine.

I've been riding a few Audax events on my work bike this year, which has a Kinesis Pro6 frame. It has all the disk/rack/mudguard mounts and plenty of tyre clearance.

Given your budget, do not look at the Mason website....

I've got a Trek Portland which I need to sell which (aluminium frame aside) ticks all those boxes.

Another vote for the Equilibrium disc frame from Genesis, mine arrived last week, I am just waiting for the rest of the bits to arrive now.

Are you actually going to use a rack? If not (I've never used a rack on my audax bike) then what about some disc equipped carbon! It'll have enough clearance and mudguard eyes aren't really needed to fit full guards.

Or 2nd hand Ti. I picked up my Kinesis GF Ti frame for £550.

Are you actually going to use a rack?

probably not, just keeping options open.
Ti just seems a bit fancy, though I'm open to 2nd hand.

spa cycles audax.

I did look at them, in the flesh too, but they looked very ordinary.

Cannondale looks nice, but can't get past that colour.

For audax id want a lower front gear than whats offered on the likes of that cannondale (as pretty as it is). Dont mind grunting up hills if required (i.e. on a fixed) but if ive got gears i want them to have a range big enough to spin on the steepest of roads 😆

[s]The Condor Fratello now comes in a disc version.

I've got the non-disc version, and having fiddled about with the fit, have come to regard it as actually, a rather nice bicycle.[/s]

Sorry, just re-read the criteria to make sure it ticked all the boxes, and completely missed the bit about price first time around.

Obvious answer is double the budget and get a Genesis Datum.
