kicks off 3 am till 10 ish....
One of the Yates twins for the win (using the Belgium engine to keep any breaks under control) ?
or by sending Tao or G up the road in the break?
Nearly 15000ft of climbing!
any links as to where to watch?
any links as to where to watch?
BBC live and will be on I player too.
Pog for the win, though I also have a fiver on WvA and Remco picking up medals.

Forgotten that Pogacar was in it.
I was going for WvA for the win.
The British contingent won't get anywhere close to it in the Men's race. Lizzie Deignan stands a decent chance in the Women's race unless her, Vos and van der Breggan and van Vleuten all mark each other out of contention and someone steals a march on them.
Pog would have to win solo.... tough to win in a sprint vs WvA.... I recon G.... so he can wear gold rimmed oakleys fpr the next 4 years 😉
Long races tend to spring surprises and not always the favorites up there (see MVDP in Yorkshire worlds). But WvA, Pog/Rog or Mollema v likely to be up there. Valverde as an outside.
Would love to see any of the Brits up there, but on recent form I doubt any will be in the front group by the Mikuni - hope I am wrong. A pity Pidcock can't ride this as well as MTB.
What do we reckon? 30 out of 130 to actually finish?
I reckon WvA 👍🏻
One of the Dutch trio in the women’s
WvA in the men’s
interesting to see how the slovenian mafia deal with him for sure, he's hard to look past!
3am tonight?
Thanks. I saw the womens race was Sunday, but never thought to check when men's was.
Much appreciated
I get a feeling Tom Dumoulin will be in the mix even though he's not had much racing recently... his chasing down the leading group in the World Champs (2019 ?) was so impressive even if it was in vain and why the **** is the WC not in the french team ??????? Devalued!
I'd love to see WvA get it over Pog. The Olympic road race tends to be a bit more freestyle (chaotic) with the greater number of smaller teams so who knows. If it gets to the flat run-in to the line then WvA would likely have the sprint sewn up. So, the likes of Pog and Rog will have to drop him on the final climb. Team tactics (and alliances) could be interesting. Do the Belgians send Remco up the road? I think GB doesn't have any compelling options. Not sure if I'll get up at 5am, maybe 7...
One of the Yates twins for the win
A triumph of hope.
I reckon WvA
Obviously only a fool would bet against him but I reckon it's hilly enough and the pace will be hectic enough that he'll be dropped. Plus, dropping him will be the express intention of most teams.

not really as missing the ? off the end might make it look like it :/
Inner ring has a really good explainer as you'd imagine. The interesting bit will be the selection made by the Fuji climb and who leads that out as the contenders will just sit on. Michael Woods might be a good outside tip as he was going well in the last week of the tour and could gap on the decisive climb
20 mins for the break....
G and Tao crashed 🙁 wheel in the expansion gap!
G and Tao crashed
Would have been bigger news if they *hadn't* crashed...
Don't think it has been mentioned, but this is also being broadcast on Eurosport, and in 4k (if you have the right sky box)
THis is getting going now, they're dropping like flies. Valverde just dumped out the back.
In the last 10km the bunch have pulled 4 mins back on the break !
Japanese fans look very well behaved.
They should run the Tour de France here.
Valverde just dumped out the back.
That at least is good news!
Edit: Cycling News says he's back in. 🙁
Thomas retired!
Seems so Spin, not actually sure how, but he's back in... He seemed to go backwards on that climb with 1.5km left on it, so must have flown down the hill !
those drainage ditches are super close to the side of the road. you wouldnt want to stop paying attention
Remco, Dunbar and Nibali in a break... They've not caught the lead bunch yet, but they're certainly on the way !
also being broadcast on Eurosport,
Cheers BBC as usual absolutely dire
TGH day is done as well. Not seen much of the Yates boys yet, are they still in the bunch?
Cheers BBC as usual absolutely dire
Eh? it's on BBC1 now.
Eh? it’s on BBC1 now.
It was on the red button before. Through the race it cut to hockey then archery during a breakaway.
Adam Yates in chasing group with WVA.
Lovely to see Cav but could have timed that interview better!
Right then, into the final stages
Wout van aert ? Or someone to attack before hand?
I'm going Pogacar with an attack 8km out and holding on.
Has to be attacks, WvA just won last week in Paris in a straight sprint. If they take it to the line they might as well give him the medal now.
BBC coverage is shocking - cutting away at precisely the wrong moments
Just watch it on the red button (its just another channel up in the hundreds). Uninterrupted coverage
Brutal racing. 230km in 35c and continuous attacks.
BBC coverage is shocking
BBC 1 not showing the sport you want - Oh the humanity. I imagine somewhere on a forum dedicated the some other sport, some one is saying "thank christ that bike riding shit has finished" haha
Actually quite a tense race now. Slightly amusing that Carapaz is in the gold/silver fight whereas behind him Pogacar is trying to close it down.
Reversal of TdF the other week.
I never quite get this - happened in London too - I'm not putting any effort in to win a medal because it increases your chances. I'd rather let them two ride away with them than up your chance
I know it's bluff and counter but the brinkmanship is great
Adam Yates has had a stunning ride!
He has, but has he got any weapons to use?
Here comes locomotive Wout.
Absolutely jonv, it's a mystery at times.
Surely if you don't help WvA then your best chance is 4th. If you do help and close it, you could get 2nd. All of this assumes WvA wins the sprint, but why wouldn't you close it?
The last 3 weeks were all bluff! He let Pogacar have the TdF knowing the ultimate prize would be his 😉
[how big a prize is Olympic gold in cycling compared to the classics or grand tours? I know for example the Tennisers don't really rate it as much as a Grand Slam even though the GS come every year]
why wouldn’t you close it?
I'm wondering how much team loyalties come into it as well. In theory they're racing for their country but there's always something in the background to say that you don't chase a teammate.
WvA is looking wrecked now.
Nice work by carapaz
They all look pretty destroyed to be honest! Be good this for silver/bronze!
Nice work by carapaz
You know what, after the working over that he got every time he tried anything at the Tour, I'm so happy for him. Played a tactical blinder.
Well, that was a satisfying winner.
So pleased it wasn't either WvA or Pogacar.
Cracking job, really pleased for Carapaz
yep, not disappointed with that at all
Enjoyed that immensely.
Was good, glad pog didn't get that
that was brutal. Gutsy stuff from Carapaz
That was excellent. And fantastic for Ecuador.
Was cheering for WVA but happy that it will be such a big deal for Ecuador.
That looked totally brutal. Good win for Carapaz, really pleased for him.
Great race and really pleased Carapaz won with an ambitious break.
That is how carapaz should have played the tour
Equador team kit is the most stylish
Road races should never ever ever end on a motor circuit, it makes them look too slow
how big a prize is Olympic gold in cycling compared to the classics or grand tours?
Historically, teeny weeny, but its a higher profile nowadays
^^ Yeah, GvA made the most of his Olympic win. Gold bike, golden touches on his helmet and shoes, plus you get that for 4 years, not just one like a World Championships!
I think it'll be a huge deal for Ecuador, that's only the second gold medal they've ever won at an Olympics. Kind of like when Chris Boardman won Gold at Barcelona, it was a massive thing for GB and the start of a track cycling revolution.
That is how carapaz should have played the tour
I doubt it would work in the tour. No radios, national teams not as organised as commercial teams at the Olympics and the result is the best bike racer on the day wins.
I'd quite like to see at least one of the grand tours go back to no radios just to make things a bit different.
Agree, it would have got him a stage win, but wouldn't have got him the Tour.
Good that. Right man won.
Cracking race, great winner.
That is how carapaz should have played the tour
Not sure which race you watched but the one I saw had Carapaz attack at every opportunity.
Fantastic race. The only disappointment for me is that for some reason Ecuador didn't use this kit:

G and Tao crashed
Can someone please give Thomas some stabilisers? He'd be an awesome rider if he could stay upright!!
Can someone please give Thomas some stabilisers? He’d be an awesome rider if he could stay upright!!
Apparently this time Tao went down first. I reckon those Pinarellos are dodgy.
I watched it but was puzzled why I didn't get to sponsor a donkey, buy some incontinence pants or get a credit card with 45% interest.
Ha ha! I had to choose my own times to make a cuppa or go for a wee. Very strange.
Women's race same time tomorrow morning. Disappointed that it's such a short course compared to the Men's race though.
Anyone watching the woman’s race, willing these 3 to keep clear. Peloton don’t look organised.
Really really want the Austrian to win. What a ride!!
She has been remarkable. Its so interesting how when the radios and team tactics are taken away, the status quo of who's in form and who usually wins gets completely blown outm I really like it!
Just needs to hang on a few minutes! She still looks good though...
Shame the other 2 have been caught. But this last 3 km could be interesting as a result.

Fully agree
Peleton finally woken up - hope Austrian manages to get gold.
