I posted on the 11 speed XT thread thread earlier this morning but can't see my reply?

Seems others have also posted on it since (shows at  the top of the thread) but I can't see those either?

Am I doing something wrong?

Still an awful lot of blank space.

Nothing really happens until halfway down my mobile screen.

Still missing navigation buttons back to Overview at the bottom of a thread.

Looks like my post didn't post which is a different problem from the one I was highlighting which was even when I know it posted (comment count) I still can't see my post...

...if this one posts

There’s a video advert appearing in the bottom corner of the screen. I’ve checked my settings and don’t think it should be there

Well I can't see what I just tried to post but presume others can as I just got an email notification that Daffy has mentioned me in this thread.

When I clicked that it takes me back to here but I still can't see either his or my posts. 😂

I had that yesterday. Looked like someone had responded to a topic, click into it but there were no updates.

Like Daffy said, this is my last attempt to use the forum now until its fixed. As we all know, forums are a dying breed anyway and to have made such a monumental fk up as this is quite impressive given its been hyped up and talked about for so long. Was on the verge of subscribing too a while back but with the laughable performance pre-"upgrade" I didn't bother...

(Apols if this ends up a duplicate post)

As a paying subscriber, I don't think I should be getting the video advert that appearing bottom right of all pages?

The email 4 new replies was me. Hold up my hands

Ah. I read that very literally, rather than txt spk. Was wondering why I would care about four replies specifically - I am going to get a notification once four replies are made etc.

I thought the same as convert, regarding that 'email 4 few replies' thing.
Eh, what does that mean? Why do I want to be e-mailed four new replies?

But it actually means 'subscribe to thread'? Or 'add thread to favourites'
Below the reply window (that I am currently typing in) there is a 'subscribe to this topic' tick box, which implies that terminology is still relevant. Does that do the same thing as the 'email 4 new replies' button; just when you're creating a reply? Or are they different functions?

I don't really want to be notified of new replies to a thread. I just would like some way of tagging a thread, so it goes into a list that I can refer to in the future. Like we used to have multiple times with the 'subscribe' button, although the list would randomly be lost/cleared so not really 100% convinced of it's usefulness.
Is there a way to do this?

ALSO - not related, but there are loads of new icons that are a bit of a mystery to me. I could just click on them, but who knows what merry hell that will unleash.
I assumed hovering over them might give you a text explainer, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe a sticky thread with an explainer, or a key would be useful? You're gonna tell me one exists now, aren't you? And I just need to find it 😀

And on the main forum page (whether chat or bike), what do the different icons mean? There appears to be a white sheet of paper, a grey sheet of paper & a blue/green thing that looks like a candle flame. What do these all mean? I suppose it doesn't matter but it would be nice to know.

3+ hours for my post above and all other following replies to show up (in this and other threads).

Stickies aren't sticking for me in the Overview but do if you're in a specific forum.

I'd quite like the thread author & when it was started moved across from the right hand side & popped in next to the FORUM bit on the left (there's plenty of room). That should leave space for a post count & last post author like we used to have.

I'm no longer seeing a Like count.

there are loads of new icons that are a bit of a mystery to me

There's an icon key at the bottom of the page under Forum Information. One says "Solved" so presumably there should be an option to make a thread/question as solved. I wondered if the flame icon ought to mean that there's an argument raging.

No need for an icon. That's a valid assumption to make about any thread on here until proved otherwise surely? 😉

I think it means "hot topic" i.e. a thread with lots of activity on it.

I noticed the ads thing too this morning and also the "last post: 2 mins ago" column was missing so it was hard to see newish replies. Then realised I had been logged out out. Logged back in and the  "last post" bit was back but still got the video ad in bottom RH corner.

Also we definitely need a "jump to end of thread" option.

Relatively minor issue, but I'd like this scrollbar removing if possible.  I like to click and hold my scroll-wheel down then drag up/down to scroll, but this scroll bar is forcing it to horizontal scroll instead

@iainc The last couple of images I posted a couple of days ago were a straight screen copy & paste into the text field, so no need to bother with post images any more. I'm assuming that still works.

I'm not seeing the video advert. I do find the double hamburger menus top left a bit confusing. It's not obvious which one will have the link you're looking for in it and there is some duplication anyway. Probably best to combine them?

The email 4 new replies was me. Hold up my hands. It used to say 'subscribe'. Can do again. here's my thoughts.

The word subscribe has two meanings on Singletrack. I was trying to remove ambiguity. You are not subscribing to singletrack magazine when you click that button. You are saying you want to receive email updates to a topic.

What do you think? am I overthinking it? is there a better phrase we can use?

Reminder. Anthony (and his broken foot) is working on the long delay after posting today.

'Get e-mail alerts for this thread'

The use of '4' as a numeral was quite confusing too.

I don't think I have *helpful* feedback as such, but wanted to at least mention it... It looks like you're trying out different layouts for the forum landing page, shifting away from the initial view where how long the OP has been a member was shown under each thread title (which led to me thinking a bunch of long-dead threads had been resurrected), and so on.

I can't put my finger on why, but it's still not quite as easily navigable as the pre-transition forum. I think it may partly be a case of not having a thread post/ page count as the old forum had - you could see at a glance which threads were attracting a lot of chat, and which had just started out. The thread age/ when it started has shifted over to the right, so I reckon that'll be easy to learn over time; but a post count would be useful.

Also, not hugely important, but a few weeks back "singletrackworld.com/forum" stopped working and instead the way to find the forum index/ landing page was "singletrackworld.com/community". Now I see "singletrackworld.com/forum/<...>" is the way to get there. Is that going to remain the way in?

Thanks!

Any luck with narrowing down the 1 hour+ delay for a post to appear after submitting it? I'm liking all the other changes, but that's the biggie that's stopping the forum being usable.

I've finally snapped and deactivated ALL ADS!

Found myself battling against a system that insisted on putting ads in exactly the wrong places and video ads showing when the controls in the dashboard clearly implied they weren't. I'm done. It's a very expensive thing to do and right now we are not in a good place to cope with ad downtime but we can't focus on the forum migration properly with the ads fudging everything up.

If you appreciate this time with no ads while we work on the posting delay issue then by all means browse our merch, donations always welcome, subscribe - There's a magazine you know!

Having a lot of issues with accidental double posts as sometimes it'll time out when replying, so I create another then it all updates and I get either 2 versions of my reply, or that plus another double post for good measure 🙂

I’ve been noticing replies not appearing, but as has been reported above, they do seem to be appearing after a while - my most recent comment was on the Elon Musk thread, it says elsewhere that I’ve posted, but I can’t see it, so I’ll go away and play elsewhere and let Mark work his magic on what is obviously recalcitrant software!

Well, I’m happy, from the overview I can go to the last post immediately now.

On desktop, at the end of a thread I was then able to use the “latest posts” link to go straight back to overview without having to scroll to the top (still miss the “skip to the top” option that was on one of the prior versions. Mainly cos I had the mental image of gnarly bikers skipping about).

Trying to see how to do it on iPhone as the “latest posts”’ link isn’t showing

Wednesday AM update:

The downtime -server can't be reached - was likely when I clicked on deactivate instead of settings on a critical plugin - ie. the problem was clearly located at some point between chair and keyboard. My bad there.

Frustrating day yesterday but we have VIP engineers helping us right now. Changes to server have been made. A buffer somewhere has been increased (that's beyond me). That means hitting 'like' now takes just a few seconds to show up (It should be almost instant but it's better than the loooong waits of yesterday).

That still leaves the big one. The reason it takes almost exactly 1 minute for a post to go through and the related issue of why the cache doesn't refresh to allow you to see your new post. That's what we want to fix today.

While we fix that, be assured that in actual fact as soon as you hit reply your post enters the database and we have it, even if you can't see it until I refresh the cache. So, try to avoid hitting submit again. I know.. I know.. But we are making progress. Slower than I'd like but I'm confident we are close.

Cheers

Mark

Taken as intended, thanks 🙂

We are about to move our DNS. Currently it's running through Ezoic (ads). Best way to explain this...

When your browser wants to load the forum this is the path it takes..

Your Browser ------> Ezoic ---------> Singletrack

And when our server gets your request it reverses the process.

Singletrack -------> Ezoic ----------> Your browser.

So you can see that Ezoic sits inbetween us and you. This is so they can inject the ads into the page and our server just has to deliver the rest rather than doing both.

Theory is good. Reality is not great. We don;t get to control exactly where we want to see ads. The EZoic controls I have seemed to stop working yesterday and I frankly lost my shit.

We are going to switch thinsg around and essentailly do it this way.

You <---------> Us

Ezoic can sit it out on the sidelines and give us codes that WE will put on the site where we think are best.

This means telling our host that the address of our site is now over here and not over there anymore. This is what changing our DNS settings boils down to. These address changes are a bit like the address changes you do with the post office when you move and in the real world it takes maybe a day for everyone's browsers and internet providers and all the complicated internet things to catch up with our new address.

So, you may start to see some funny things when you visit us in the next day. Your browser may try and get some parts of the page from our old address and some from the new address. Things could get a bit screwy for a time. This can't be avoided, but we are looking forward to having a direct relationship with your browser very soon.

You'll probably be fine.

I've made a shitload of DNS changes over the years, established wisdom was that it takes 48 hours for the hierarchy to catch up.  But that was 20+ years ago.  (Anecdotally) it's in the order of minutes today.

Speaking of DNS, I've been noticing that sometimes when I load the site it looks one way, and other times it looks another.  I've just worked out that this relates to whether "www" is in the URL.

When loading using this link it looks different...
https://singletrackmag.com/forum/recent

...to this link...

https://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/recent

Could that be related to some of the issues you've been having?

Nothing shold be lost.

DNS changes are active now. Depending on amny things you may notice some odd things with the site or not. We are continuing to look at the cache and posting delays now.

And to ask if there is any chance of a total post count indication to be reinstated on the "latest posts" view. Always nice to see which posts are proving popular.

Still taking quite a while for anything I post to show up.

Better than the three hours + the other day but still pretty bad.

I know it's probably pretty low down your list but when I try and post pictures from Flickr they come out a bit sideways stretched.

Looks more odd.

Posting them by copying from the address bar in Flickr and pasting that direct into the box at the bottom of the thread.

Can I do this some other way that won't distort the pictures?

Edit.

That one posted pretty fast. Seems it's posting pictures that takes ages and comes out distorted then.

Better than it was and moving in the right direction. 👍

For anyone annoyed at the site being down for a bit today, spare a thought for my 3yo. He’s off nursery with a bug today and iplayer wouldn’t work on our tv just when he wanted to watch go jetters. Disaster.
