@Cougar if you genuinely believe you can help resolve the phone logout issue by quizzing those of us who are experiencing it, then I'm willing to engage. I would mention that in my case, I didn't just say "it's ****ed, fix it". I tried to list more of the how and when, phone and OS details and what I had done to try to resolve it locally. Quite a few of the things you later suggested. I also did this in an (as yet) unanswered mail to tech to report it.
... I'm not trying to fix it. I don't have the means to do so. I'm trying to extract information that's useful beyond "it doesn't work" so that the people who can fix it have a fighting chance of doing so. If it started being symptomatic at the same time for everyone, that's useful feedback because the STW devs will (or at least, should) know what they changed at that time. If the users are all using a particular plugin then again that's a common denominator. If they all are (or aren't) ticking 'remember me;' if they all are (or aren't) closing the browser after their session; if they all are (or aren't) accessing the site via a stored bookmark... do you not see where I'm coming from here?
I take Cougar's point but from a Users perspective, nothing has been changed at the client end (as far as they know), there's been an update at the server/service end and things have gone pear shaped. Leap to your own conclusion. I do recognise, Users that sometimes say 'I've not done anything' have been fiddling about and just don't admit or recall it (or there could be other silent updates they're not aware of)...
It doesn't have to be a "fault" at either end in isolation. I used to have a bookmark for STW with an argument which took me to the forum index if I was logged in or to the login page if I wasn't. Something was changed serverside which introduced a bug that, when using my link (which I'd also recommended to others), if you were already logged in then the redirection changed the Persistent ("remember me") cookie into a Session cookie.
For the purposes of cookies, Chrome handles (or at least, handled, I don't know about now) the concept of sessions somewhat strangely so in using my link (or, perversely, NOT ticking "remember me" on the login page) and almost never closing the browser kept me logged-in in perpetuity, whereas the browser honouring the Persistent cookie would have meant I'd have to log back in every 14 days (the WordPress default).
If as a developer, if you cannot replicate that bug because all you're getting by way of feedback is "it [does|doesn't] work for me" then how in the hell can you be expected to fix it?
Pre-migration, if the cookie wasn't set then you weren't logged in, it was that simple. If you had anything installed which messed with about cookies then it could potentially be causing problems. It took weeks of to-ing and fro-ing, comparing notes with... I think Scotroutes? and maybe other users too, in order for me to spot that bug.
Post-migration I don't know, I haven't looked at it beyond noting that the cookies now appear to be of Wordpress origin rather than Singletrack. Maybe that's the change which has caused some clients to bork; maybe there's been a client security update which regards WP cookies as "third party" and rejects them; maybe a security update to the server has increased minimum security level requirements on the client; maybe some sort of ad blocker has received a list update which has ****ed it; maybe it's something else entirely; I have no idea, these are all just wild guesses.
If an issue suddenly appears which affects some but not all users, some but not all of whom have all their clients affected, it's impossible to point the finger in one place. We've probably got some sort of compatibility issue, either by accident or by design. If Client Environment A works and Client Environment B doesn't then - even if the cause is ultimately server-related - something has to be different between those two environments. There has to be, even if it's something as innocuous as one user manually typing in STW's URL and another using a saved bookmark.
Only thing that has changed for me is this new site. I only got logged out when the new site appeared prior to that I was never logged out.

Fix the formatting on mobile - please. It used to be poor but now it’s extremely poor as the banner ad at the top seems to make the page massively wide except most of it is just blank space. Trouble is that when scrolling it keeps going sideways as well as up and down and it’s very annoying.

I can't see two specific lists. I will describe what's happened to me, if you think I've missed anything relevant then ask: On or around 27th June I started getting logged out on my phone. Only on my phone. It's not happening on my PC or Chromebook. Pixel 7a, Google browser, no plugins. Nothing changed on the phone, no new apps etc. I get logged out immediately if I close the browser page. If I visit another site, reload STW - I'm logged out. I navigate to STW via the singletrackworld.com/forum/recent link. Usually via the list of frequently visited sites on the Google browser home page. I always check the "remember me" box. This is not happening on any other sites where I am logged in, including other forums. If I don't close the browser, but just leave my phone with it loaded, it logs me out after a time delay. I'm not sure exactly how long this is, but probably in the region of 30 minutes. I have tried clearing browsing history, cookies, cache. It happens over 5g and WiFi.
I don't know if that helps, if I've missed anything you think might help, I am happy to try to answer it.

Correct. But then again many others have no issues, it be server side or it could be user. Really difficult to tell when it’s hard to duplicate.

I've just tried the same thing. Pixel 7a, Chrome browser; variously closing windows, browsers, even tried launching STW via the Google search bar in case that is somehow different from Chrome itself. All works fine. Even survived a reboot.

No. Also, I've not had an issue on my phone before. This started at the same time as others were reporting the same thing, although on iPhones and different systems, so it doesn't seem to be platform specific?
I've just downloaded Brave as a test. On an initial look, it doesn't seem to be logging me out when I close the browser page. I don't yet know if it's doing so after a time delay. I'll let you know tomorrow.
I don't mind using a different browser just for STW as a temporary bodge, but it's not an ideal solution tbh.
May I just comment,
IPhone XS, latest iOS updates using safari - no issues at all except for terminally slow page loads, sometimes up to 20 seconds but usually 5 to 10 seconds.
Tried switching WiFi off and using 4g data connection which is way faster than my broadband, no difference in page load times.

Edit : I logged out to see if it made a difference and logged back in, objecting/rejecting all advertising and holy ****ing christ what a bit of a mess of adverts all over the place, temu shit everywhere.
Slightly faster to load pages @ sub 5 seconds than being logged in but still way way slower than any other forum I use.
If I was a new user to the site and experienced the above on attempting to access the site I’d not bother with STW at all,

Yep. I'm not saying for a moment that it's not a server update which has started causing issues on some devices, the timing alone would point to that as a cause. What I'm finding strange is that it's only some devices which are affected. Like, for instance, the server was updated to require a specific level of encryption / security which older devices / browsers don't support.
A few years back I maintained a Linux-based internal web server which was used to manage engineer bookings; because we had full control of the client machines (being in the office) we had it set up so that it wasn't good enough simply to accept high-security connections, it explicitly denied access to anything which supported weaker ones. So technically it was an issue with the server if clients couldn't connect but the solution wasn't to weaken the server, it was to update the clients.
I'm not saying that's what's happening here - there's only so many assumptions you can make about clients across the public Internet - rather it's just an example as to how it might not be as simple as "well STW obviously broke something."

Hmm. Here’s some weirdness. I normally use Safari but in desperation I downloaded Firefox to my phone and logged in. Then I logged in on Safari as usual. So far I haven’t been logged out again. Fingers crossed

I think the common blame is on Wordpress, has other forum software been considered? There’s automotive forums I read that use VBulletin and have been around decades with a way bigger archive of posts than here yet they load in a zip.

I don't know how many times this needs to be said. I've no idea about your "automotive forum" (are you referring to Pistonheads?) but STW is a business trying to keep a handful of people in a job and - hopefully - even turn a small profit. They have one full-time and one part-time developer who are also responsible for the daily upkeep of the rest of the site.
What would you have them do instead? People complain about paying £3/month for a subscription, people complain about adverts, people complain when STW promotes its own content, people complain when STW has a fundraiser to migrate to a more robust platform with (expensive) "VIP" support... So what's your solution?
I don't get logged out (Safari on Mac and iPhone) but navigating the forum takes between 5-7 seconds between topic pages and going back and forth between topics and the main forum index.
I don't have any solutions though other forums I use are much faster (The Fretboard and The Gear Page).

Getting logged out from forum and page is being replaced by some dodgy ggoogle winner page, hit back and then other dodgy ads appear taking up whole page instead of the forum, including one very much NSFW!
I too am getting the scummy "you've been chosen as a Vodaphone/BT winner" page hijack ads and while posting this comment a questionable message pop up screen saying i'm about to leave the site and do i want to save my changes which won't go away.
What with that and the Temu adds plastered over the page restricting the view it is reminiscent of the early days of the internet when pops ups and spam ads were a common place occurrence.
And lastly, I happened to scroll past the end of a chat a moment ago and the icons for the Forum Information section below were all full page sized. Though it doesn't seem to be the case on this thread / right now.

So the log in/log out issue seems to have been stealthily fixed in the background as I'm now back to where I was before I didn't change anything and it stopped working coincident with the last obvious release.

We had weeks of it being too complicated to resolve as it was 'obviously an issue at the client end' when multiple people had not done anything and there'd been some pretty significant server side changes coincident with this starting...
Well done for sorting but please slow down a bit to go faster. It's usually better to resolve in advance than run around trying to put self inflicted fires out afterwards. 1.5 or 1500, same principle applies.

Have you considered that its a forum about pushbikes and not really you know THAT big a deal if its not quite perfect?

Same, I changed nothing. It seems quite a few of us starting getting the log out issue at the same time, which then resolved itself for all of us simultaneously a couple of weeks later. All without us making changes at our end. It does suggest a change at the server end which was then reversed. I'm just glad it's fixed, thanks to the hamsters but it is mildly irritating for it to be repeatedly implied by some on here that it was a user issue all along. Mildly irritating in the same way as my Mrs using the last ice cubes from the freezer and not refilling the tray. I'll get over it! 😊
Did it fix itself 14 days after it went wrong? Could it be that some cookies somewhere expired and stopped messing things up?

I'm not sure what's going on today but every time I refresh or open a post I'm seeing Light Mode before it changes to Dark Mode after a noticeable (but still sub-second) interval. It was fine earlier today.

The Google Widevine authorisation request that pops up all the is putting me in a mood that isn't compatible with making positive posts on STW thread. It's the only site I use that I have to repeatedly click "bloquer" on Google widevine. Please make it go away because I'm not going to accept. 🙂
