I have the same issue with the ebike thread (Chrome on an acer Chromebook)

There's something funny going on with the image hosting. If I click on an image in someone's post, I get a popup to scroll images that seems to contain a few random images from the current page, not necessarily including the image I actually clicked. Some images are missing altogether from this and you can't get them in the large version popup. Images from different users are mixed together, as well.

Just checking in to see how things are coming along and whether it's time to re-engage with the site and re-subscribe. Looks like issues are being addressed so I will maybe give it another month. Going AWOL has highlighted to me that all I really miss from here is reading about other peoples (bike) adventures and related photos.

I kept the faith, finding it much better than it was and marginally better than pre-upgrade. Finding it much easier to add images and find the quote function very handy.

Re: trip reports, is there still a limit of five images per post? Would like to try writing some trip reports again but it's difficult to get each trip down to 10 photos let alone 5!

I've made some adjustments to the ads that I hope will have fixed the issue of subscribers seeing the insterstitial ad. If any subscribers are still seeing it please take a screenshot and send it to me at mark@singletrackworld.com and I'll do my best to get it sorted.

Thanks Mark, no more ads here 👍

Same here. So slow, I think the page has loaded, pick a thread to view, and I end up with a completely different thread opening.

OnePlus Nord running Android/Chrome.

What are you doing differently?  Is this an issue with the mobile site?

Index takes about 5 seconds to load, pages about 2 for me.  Posting could be quicker, this reply took maybe 11 seconds (and me editing to add the posting time just there took 4).

No idea what I'm doing differently. Nothing different to how I used to use the site for years. On mobile phone, go to STW forum on Chrome browser saved to phones desktop (makes no difference doing this or loading directly from Web search result) took 19 seconds to fully load the forum overview page. Further 5 seconds until the selected thread starts to load having selected the double arrow icon, then about 10 seconds til it gets to the last thread posted.

For the last couple of days it has been absolutely perfect for me (android/chrome) I can't remember the last time it was. I only clicked on this thread because although ironically the sticky function doesn't work but I could see the thread getting bumped up, I was curious to see what issues people might have.

Only issue is a 1-2 second lag on every click through. This is the only site I visit with such a pronounced delay to load a new page. Other than that it all seems to be working fine.

Ernie + 1. Well done STW tech. Also fine on Windows 11 and Firefox. It's even acceptable without software that must not be mentioned.

Down to around 3-4 seconds to load/refresh page now so it’s an improvement but occasionally it hangs for ages

edit #1 : I timed the above post and it took 10seconds to load from hitting the “post” button to showing up, Using 2018 iPad Pro/safari all updated.

edit #2 : Took 6 seconds for edit #1 to show up

edit #3 Took 3 seconds for edit #2 to show up, I think I’m getting somewhere with this posting delay

edit #4 :Nope, spoke too soon as it’s now back to 6 seconds

I use the mobile version very rarely (which is why I asked the question).  How is it for you on a PC?

All good for me, but I don't look to do anything fancy, just browse, read, attempt to post something amusing or my opinion and that is pretty much it. I'm not sitting on multiple threads looking to post on all so I'm not really seeing any delays in page loads or things like that, it is just doing it's thing. Given the database has a lot of entries I'm not expecting instant results.

Has been excellent for me for weeks now - last week had a single post (this one) not showing me the last posts but that seemed to sort itself as well.

Absolutely no idea what I do differently to those with issues - I don't think my post count is low, but it isn't in the big numbers, I login every couple of months and I use mainly my phone (latest android and chrome) or occasionally my laptop (windows 11 and chrome).

Same experience on both. It seems to be working well for me.

Can we do something about posted links.... I am unable to read the text as that light blue on white background. Quite frustrating. This screen shot on the skate shoe thread, lots of links, zero legibility

For some reason, on the latest FGF I've got adverts constantly playing in the bottom left corner of the screen (Chrome on Android 13, Moto g82)

When I then tried to access the forum from the hamburger, clicking the forum, or any other links didn't work but I started getting audio blasting out of my phone from the advert.

The only way I was able to access the forum was via my profile and then forum posts.

Image of the adverts -

Appreciating this one isn't an easy fix necessarily, but you may (eventually) want to take a look at the swear filter, as it's a little... aggressive. Recent examples of things that it can't accept:

- ****stan (country to the west of India)

- Jus****ch.com (just watch .com)

-...and presumably, S****horpe (Lincolnshire town also known as Scunny)

Obviously there's a need and desire for it to be effective, but perhaps not quite *that* effective?

Right.  So the old swear filter was a look-up table with a list of naughty words in column A and what they should substituted with in column B.  This was a 1:1 ratio, so if you wanted to say block the F-word plus variants such as effer, effing, mothereffer and so forth, they all had to be entered manually as separate entities.  This is why effing was swapped to [four asterisks] rather than [four asterisks]ing or [seven asterisks] - it was literally four asterisks typed into the right-hand side of the substitution table.  There was no pattern-matching (or at least, if there was then it wasn't used).

The new forum is using the old word list or a derivation of it - confirmed by my previous post - but is now seemingly pattern-matching blindly, giving rise what IT types call The S****horpe Problem.

It's actually surprisingly challenging programmatically to get right.  One time I was managing such a list for an email server.  Tons of email suddenly started caught by the spam filter.  It took days to track down (this was back in the days when logging was for shit).  It turned out that it was rejecting "specialist," a word in many a job title and thus many an email signature, because it contained "cialis" which is a Viagra-a-like drug.

As an aside, the Moderators don't - or at least, didn't - have access to change the swear filter so whilst we could read it (and it was utterly hilarious reading, I wish I'd saved a copy) any amendments had to be done by Mark or the Devs.

Asterisks in [brackets] above because the forum seemingly parses three asterisks as a super bold instruction.

More ads while logged in, the front page is a bit busy! (checking it doesn't reveal anything about my browsing habits, they look suitably STW-esque but presumably that's a work thing, authoring technical documentation on flues 🤣 )

There appears to be some weird caching going on, resulting in the ads. If I've just logged in to my PC/phone to start browsing, or returned after an indeternminate period, I'll occassionally get ads. Clicking on the little "My Account" icon top right, not doing anything, and returning to the forum clears the ads.

Mod test: Checking posts can still be edited.

Still taking 5seconds to load pages/post comments on safari/Mac OS, similar on iPad etc

edit : posting this took 10 seconds and the little "working" spinny green icon was highlighted in top right of stw page on screen

Just checked this and it happens for me too, unfortunately the 'effect' of having clicked 'My Account' only seems to last for a few minutes, then it's ads ahoy again until I'm safely back in the bosom of the forum

Is it me or is it slowing down again? Page load times (actually a pause before anything happens) on chrome on Android and windows laptop. Not as bad as on the old system, but also nothing like as snappy as loading most other website.

And...not scrolled up so it's probably been stated many times already...the posts shown as latest on the overview are 10+ minutes out of date. Often (like now for the bike forum) 30+ mins.  https://singletrackmag.com/forum/

And finally......wow, this place is quiet now....lots of people didn't seem to return after the pause/disruptions at the changeover. Must be a bit of concern at STW towers 😌

It would be interesting to see the data on that. I see threads on page one now lasting 24-48 hours before they drop off, a year ago that would never have been the case.

The front page is longer now though - the last post on there now would have been bottom of P2 or top of P3 on old forum.

Last post (as at 11:22) is only 1 day old too. That's on overview/latest view. I don't think the bike forum was ever as busy as the chat forum.

There does seem to be a lack of fun at the minute though. Perhaps it's just not a fun time.

The last time I had visibility of stats, the ratio of bike:chat posts was pretty close to 50% each.  The big difference was that the chat forum tended to have fewer but longer threads.  That was a while ago now though.

You're probably already aware, but in case you're not: pale blue headline text on white embedded links to articles when viewed on Android mobile with Firefox browser - I can barely read them.

In Firefox PC browser there's white text on light grey background at bottom page:

"Currently viewing this topic 1 user" + "Our newest member:" + "Latest Post:"

A couple of times now I've clicked on a thread and another seemingly random one has opened (that was not next to it in the list). I'm assuming this is my clumsy fingers but was pretty sure I'd clicked on the correct thread. Will monitor it but thought I'd log it here in case others have experienced it.

I'm finding it painfully slow to get into the forum. Once I'm in it quite often won't let me leave and requires multiple attempts to confirm I want to exit. Very Hotel California.

It has lost its sparkle. The rapid turnover and wit on threads seems to have gone which I hope will return. If I'm representative, I guess people are less willing to invest time engaging and posting if it takes so long and fewer are reading your brilliant repartee.

On balance, it does otherwise operate correctly for me, albeit begrudgingly.

Use your laptop? 😁

If you hit the >> then it will load the page and immediately scroll down to the last (unread?) post.  If it's jumping up and down randomly then I've no idea, sorry.

similar here, on opening a thread the page appears on screen then jumps up, back down down, then settles for viewing.

edit : 11 seconds for my post above to appear

It's not "instant" for me but it's pretty rapid.

No advert issues but then I block advertising both in the browser and at the network level.  Is that the difference?  Full Members shouldn't be being served ads anyway.

Earlier today it was so slow I actually just gave up and went and started reading a book instead. It's refreshing how the book just instantly starts up.

I think STW finally loaded by the time I had read a couple of pages.

I've not had any of these slow-downs. Speed seems fine. Not instant, but certainly consistent.

The only real issues I'm experiencing are;

Poor colour choice on some items (pasted links, some menus) with pale blue on white. I'm in Dark Mode btw.

The weird login caching thing whereby I'll (sometimes) get ads until I click on my Profile icon, then go back to the forum.

I mean, I question whether we need all the post formatting buttons but maybe I'm just not being adventurous enough 😂

When writing a new post, the lines wrap way too early, long before filling the width of the box. Posts seem to be formatted correctly, it's only when typing that they look odd.

This happens on PC, both Chrome and Firefox.

Example:

image.png

Edit: The image preview cuts off at the same point, but then I get a scrollbar which lets me view the rest.

Example 2:

I'm getting similar effect to the picture above. Everything scrolling off the side of the phone screen unless zoomed out to so small that you can't see it. Happened so ce the system logged me out late afternoon and I had to log in again.

Using Firefox browser on Android if itakes any difference.

Hope this helps diagnose the issue

Cheers, Ol

I just had a look at those two threads and, yes, I get the same problem. With the PSA thread, it's only the current page. I guess it'll resolve itself when the page is full and another is added.

Yes the PSA thread looks off to me too!

i used to code a lot of emails for a living - this 'forcing desktop mode' malarkey used to happen when something (like a picture - I'm wondering if it's an ad that's outside STW's control) is too big for its containing element and breaks the layout.

Posts are flowing off the side of the screen again on an iPhone mini.

There’s also another thing…

Yeah, there's a large black box / empty screen at the top of each post or post list on my Android too.

The 'likes' are a bit random. Sometimes, it shows me liking a reply almost (within 5 seconds) instantly. Other times, it hangs for ages without appearing to do anything, so I scroll down and read more replies, then go back up, sometimes to find my 'like' had been registered, sometimes not.

The 'likes' is a bit pointless now as you can't see how many people have liked a post, only the last few people who liked it.

One thing that would be really nice to have is a floating 'Go/Back to Top' button. Especially on mobile devices.
