Having trouble with some threads not showing recent replies.

All this and a price increase?

I'm amazed it's not been mentioned every four posts for the last 22 pages.

It's patchy though some threads work fine. Others don't.

I am off to ride my bike so there is an up side.

Ads have stopped for me on mobile (iOS) with the new forum (was ridiculous before that). Still got them on desktop though (been like that for a looooooong time) even when logged in.

I'm setting up ads so that will likely be my fault. I've made some changes but do let mw know here or direct (preferable) if you are still seeing ads when you are logged in.

Update: Friday am

Andy is removing old forum data from the database. 30 million indiviual entries. It will take a day or so, but as they go things should start to improve performance wise for the reasons I've explained before.

Anthony is working on the supersticky problem for the recent posts page, which to most of us is the forum front page.

The problem here is that page is a generated page and not an actual static forum page. In other words each time you go to that page the forum runs a process to go through the other forums to get all the latest posts and merge them into that list. From your side iut looks like a forum page but it is different under the bonnet. That means it doesn't work in the same wauy as the Chat and Bike forum pages where sticky posts are kept and is th ereason why the current stickies are only at the top of those forums where they were created. It's a tricky one to code a fix for but Anthpony is working on something. At the same time we are fixing the small things slowly - Andy is aware that the cache/update bug hasn't gone away completely although it is functioning much better. So that's still a priority job too.

Each day, something gets fixed and we are getting better. Thanks for sticking with us.

The annoying ad for a free member like myself is when it takes over half my screen as I try to type anything

I've never ever looked at an ad to ever check out a product so I must be the ad companies worst customer

I'm here for the forum chat and may have become a full member however the forum is so quiet I will see if it picks up in the future

I can remember when if you started a thread and quickly got a century of replies what a good feeling

If you get 10 now you are doing really well

Here's hoping I've not annoyed anyone too much

This is easy to read

But this isn't so easy

The font and point size of most of the text on here isn't great for legibility at 100% zoom on an average laptop screen, imo.

The font size is 16, which is Google's recommended font size on screens.

I can't say as it's any different from any other website I use.  It's larger if anything.

Have you tried moving your face closer to the screen? 😁

It is a similar size pointwise but it is unusually thin. It's not terrible, probably perfectly adequate, but at the lower end of readability

I've got a new fault (Chromebook) - everything has moved over by 1/3 of a page to the right.

It's not compressed it into that 2/3, there's 1/3 of a page now off to the right of my screen which is why

I am typing this in truncated lines because otherwise I can't see the end of my sentence. There's no way

for me to drive the mouse over to bring it back into view, no scroll bar, etc. It looks like there should be something in the left third, but it's just white space.

Ooh, I just found that if I keep typing some more became visible so now it's only 3/4 and 1/4, but the effect is the same. I can't read posts because I can't scroll over.

I nearly couldn't post this because only half the Add Reply button is on screen.

Chrome on a pixel 8

Getting a grey transparent box over the bottom quarter of the screen. I can see half an X in the corner but there's not enough on the screen to actually make it go away.

I don't know if it's down to this, but the rest of the thread is very slow to download and then becomes unresponsive

Please remove the Ad Blocker Blocker.

I already subscribe. I don't need to be nagged to subscribe. Just let me read the forum and get rid of the other annoying crap that I don't want.

Seriously... who implements a change like that at 11pm on a Friday night?

Running an adblocker and supporting the site via subscribing are not mutually exclusive things, as your message seems to suggest.

That's my point. I already subscribe, therefore let me run an adblocker.

FWIW I've currently disabled the adblocker on STW but now I'm gettings ads AND the pop up telling me to disable the adblocker. I'm having to type this on my phone

I don't block ads. I block trackers and 3rd party sites that I don't have a contract with. Especially those that track across sites that have popups saying "we respect your privacy".

I immediately navigate away from sites that block me from interacting with the site in the way I want.

I still sub, and the next one is due in a few days. So I do wonder if it was intentional that it was suggesting I sub? But if the site blocks me from using it, then oh well, was a fun 15 years or so. Learned a lot. 3 of my bikes are a direct result of lurking on STW.

That was my point too. The screen message is suggesting that anyone using adblockers couldn't possibly be a subscriber. The truth is that there may be good reasons to run this kind of software even as a subscriber who isn't seeing display ads.

I’ve just had the Adblocker image flash up on my iPad using safari, In the cookie settings under vendor I have unticked the 350+ “legitimate interest” cookies.

A simple opt out all button would be better

I've just had 3 of those messages pop up one on top of the other, on a page with 11 adverts showing.

Also the forum is taking ages to load on my phone this evening, and when it does all but a few of the posts are blank. The posts are there but no writing in them. On this thread I can only see the last 4 posts.

Full subscriber here and no adblocker.

Worryingly the STW forums do seem, to me at least, to be getting v quiet. Lots fed up with forum issues over many months?

Hopefully, shortly, it will finally be sorted and most will, over time, return 🤞

ill see your adblocker message and raise you.  also a subscriber, logged in, just whitelisted the site (altho i shouldnt need to) and still get them.  having to use a different browser to post.

It's probably because it's pointless posting at the moment if you want an actual discussion.

Fine if you want to post a comment and walk away, but for me, replies and posts are taking up to 24 hours to even appear

I know that the adverts are an important revenue stream, but I'm starting to get some that hijack the whole screen and 'pretend' to be system alerts telling you you have an issue - so untrue. I'm familiar enough not to get caught out but they're a pain none the less. Does STW have any say in the sort of stuff it advertises?

Saturday am Update:

I unintentionally launched the adblocker detection tool last night. My fault entirtely for all that nonsense. Late night issue with me thinking I was testing the tool on our pre-production site and I lauched it by mistake before any of the settings were set up correctly.

If we do launch it, it will need to be off for full members AND free members. But right now I have no plans to launch it.

Work continues on deleting the data from the old forum. It has to be done carefully and in batches. There's 30 million entries in the database to get rid of.

All settings to ensure that full members don't see ads are in place as far as I can tell. If anyone is a full member and you see ads can you email me directly with a screenshot. What I need to see is that your member label says, 'Full member' AND there are ads in your viewport. If you are seeing ads and it says 'Free member' and you think you should be a full member then email subs@singletrackworld.com with that one and Heather and tech will look at your account on monday. For me, covering the weekend and setting up the ads I can deal with these specific issues.

Cheers

Mark

The forum is impossible to use today on my iPhone using Safari or Chrome.

It sort of loads but then freezes, then it may scroll and everything just disappears to a blank frozen screen with maybe a tiny bit of stuff at the top, but no way to interact with the page.

If I use the hyperlink tool in the tool bar to attach a hyperlink to some text, it displays correctly in the editor (blue, underlined text) but renders the hyperlink as standard text & then embeds the url as a preview, which makes a proper mess or your text. I'd assumed that the embedding feature was for stand alone urls pasted straight in.

Scrap that then, false alarm. Although it did go screwy for me in another post. Perhaps it was a delay in the Edit updating.

I'm having issues with the entire forum page periodically going completely blank & white. I suspect that it's a Free Member issue and related to the adverts I mentioned earlier that take over the whole screen & pretend to be system alerts.

Just wondering if we can up the max image size from 4.9MB? (did you type in 5000000 bytes?) I haven't got a fancy phone (pixel 7a) but most images I take are ~6-7MB JPGs and so I can't upload anything without re-encoding/resizing

Thanks. I'm also occasionally getting the whole forum jumping several inches to the right and losing the right hand part of the screen. It's about the same width as the right hand column so could again be ad related (although nothing displays on the left hand side).

Monday am update:

Just Anthony and myself today.
I think the brief issue with free members screens freezing was ad related. It seem sto be the sticky ad at the bottom of the page that could be the issue. I've removed it for now until I can work out where the bad ad code was coming from.

Anthony is currently working adding more useful information to the forum index pages. So making sure you can see the number of posts, last post by and when rather than the default stuff about the OP and how old the post is.

Also looking at better menu and navigation links on the forum pages. Still alos looking for a solution to the sticky posts appearing on the latest posts index. That page is a tricky one that we didn't expect to be as awkward as it is. There's still a few million old forum database entries to get rid of. Andy is doing that overnight rather than during the day as it has a performance cost. That job is expected to be done by Wednesday.

I have a question about 'subscribed' threads.

Before someone (probably cougar) says "this was covered 15 pages ago"; I have searched to see if this has been covered already, but the search did not return anything. And there is no way I am searching back over 24 pages of posts.

I have a number of subscribed posts, from before the update. They disappeared for a while but are now back. Great - this is very helpful. Thanks.
Previously, I did not get e-mail updates every time someone responded to these 'subscribed' threads. Now I do.
I (perhaps incorrectly) used the subscribe button so I could create my own list of useful threads that I could refer to in the future. I don't need to receive an e-mail every time someone replies.

I have looked in various 'account' locations, but cannot see if it is possible to turn these e-mails off. I suspect the functionality of the 'subscribed' threads has now changed.
I notice there is a 'bookmark' button/symbol/tag, but these are against specific replies in a thread & I am not sure how you find these in the future. I can't find a 'bookmarked posts' section.

Basically, is it possible to keep my 'subscribed' list, but not receive e-mails?
If I have to unsubscribe to them & do something else to achieve that, that is perfectly fine. Thanks.

It's a good question and worthy of clarification.

For BBpress (Old forum) Subscribed meant it was logged in your account like a bookmark. You weren't emailed.

For WpForo (New forum) Subscribed means you get an email when there's an update.

Same term, different meaning and when you also throw in the fact you can subscribe to Singletrack and pay money, this perhaps explains why I'm keen to get the vocab right across the site. It's one of the reasons I made the move towards using the word 'Membership' a long time ago. But it can all be solved with time and thought and useful navigation and labels.

Words like 'Follow', 'Bookmark', 'Subscribe', 'Membership' etc. All have a useful part to play. Just need to get them in the right places 🙂

thatll be very well received, thanks.

yeah that used to confuse me too, the fact that i was subscribed to some threads, and also had others in my 'favourites'.  what i really wanted was a list of useful threads that i could refer back to at any time, so 'favourites' i guess.

not sure why someone would 'subscribe' to a thread if there were 'favourites' as an option.

good work, getting better all the time.  thanks

@mark - thanks for the reply. I appreciate it, given that you must have a lot on at the moment.

Does this mean then, at the moment the 'email replies' button to subscribe to a thread is the only way to 'favourite' it? And so currently e-mail notification of further posts are inevitable?
If so, I can perhaps just create a filter rule in my e-mail & have them all go into a folder where I can delete them easily.

Or have I missed how you would 'favourite' a thread without subscribing (and getting e-mail updates)?

The solution there really is for the forum to resize oversized images at point of upload.

Or use an external host I suppose.

TBH I shoot 99.9% of my photos in 12MP mode on my Pixel 8 Pro. It's only certain landscape shots that benefit from 50MP. As a result, my photos are generally in the 2-3MB range so upload no problem.

Yeah me too.

Pictures linked for me on Friday and Sunday morning.

Then the direct link pics disappeared to be replaced with the distorted/stretch images, then came back again today.

Just tried posting another four direct linked pics from Flickr.

Two of them showed up as direct link pics, the other two just as  clicky text.

One other thing I have noticed relating to e-mail notifications.

In my Account Settings, I have de-selected:

Notifications>Select what email notifications you want to receive>when I get mentioned on a forum post

so when someone puts @myusername I shouldn't receive an e-mail, as this is not ticked.
But, earlier on when @mark referred to me in his reply, I got an e-mail notification so it seems this isn't quite working correctly.

Just wondering if we can up the max image size from 4.9MB? (did you type in 5000000 bytes?) I haven't got a fancy phone (pixel 7a) but most images I take are ~6-7MB JPGs and so I can't upload anything without re-encoding/resizing

I have the same phone. And an app called "resize me! Pro"

I assume it was free and looked reasonably unproblematic. I tend to be quite wary of apps that aren't from a known quantity and will check reviews and screenshots. I would rather pay than get some shitty ad strewn app. Anyway, I've had this a while, maybe even from previous phone. And my phone hasn't burned down, my bank account hasn't been drained and I haven't been extorted for some crypto to unlock my devices.

Unsubscribe (from thread) issue:

I'm getting a few emails about updates, so I thought I'd look into how to some unsubscribe from threads -  I can see my 153 subscribed threads under my profile / forums / subscribed. Tons of them are no longer open to replies, so I guess that’s OK - but I just thought I'd mention a strange behaviour. .

I can unsubscribe within that "subscribed" list - great - but when I click 'unsubscribe' for a thread, I get a spinner for a few seconds then I am dumped back to the forum main page https://singletrackmag.com/forum/

Now I have to go thorough all the above 4 clicks, with an inevitable delay in loading, to get back to my subscribed list - to click to unsubscribe the next one.

So what would ideally be one click once in the subscribed list is five clicks with delays. Can it possibly be set to keep the list up after an unsubscribe click? Not a priority but it might smooth forum use a touch

As the option to subscribe is (was?) at the bottom, I was going to write: It would be a useful feature to see "you are subscribed the this thread" when reading with a checkbox to undo that. BLIMEY, there it is at the top left. I'll give it a shot - yep it works

@stumpy01 a quick test.

Yep. Got an e-mail notification. Not sure if this was a real test or a drac's dry sense of humour 'test'.
Also got a notification e-mail from nickingsley's post.
Gonna  need to set-up a filter sooner than I anticipated 🤣

Aside,

There's a noticeable uptick in speed.  Posting takes a beat but page load is a couple of seconds.

Same here. Logged in on mobile (Chrome, Android), all the ads. Including one ironically asking if I was ready for a beautiful smile.
