In case it's not been mentioned - the Insert Link dialog has white text on a white background (for both the labels and edit boxes) in the dark theme.

might be being daft, but i cant see the 'insert image' icon any more.  you used to be able to insert from local pc, is this kaputt for the time being?  and if its a photo from flickr/imgur etc, do you just put the address between html img and /img tabs and hope for the best?

ta

EDIT:  might have found it, use My Media below the text box?

I hope I don't jinx it with this post, but it really does seem as if the lag has gone. Wahay!! I'm sure the last week or two has put a few years on you Mark! Thanks to you and the team for working so hard to fix it and keeping us informed along the way. Have a beer or two to celebrate, you deserve it! The styling and layout tweaks can wait until you catch your breath.

Edit: Yup - 5 or 6 seconds tops to post that 😀

Ooh, I've been out and about today so not had the chance to see what's been happening.

Now seems like a good time to try out Mark and the IT team's hard work

<Edit> well that seemed to work very well, about 15 secs from posting to screen refreshing with this post in it.

Congratulations folks, you've been doing some excellent work over the last few weeks and it's certainly appreciated here.

I know you've still got loads of work to do, but I hope you'll all have a celebratory drink this evening.

<Edit 2> and just because it now looks like I can, here's a photo taken today

I think I’m following the right process to post an image but none are appearing.
click my media

click add files

seiect from iPhone photo library.
file appears - await checkbox and check it.

Edit - No image appeared but some weird “font awesome” notices appear
now in presume I should click “insert into post” <!-- Font Awesome fontawesome.com --> <!-- Font Awesome fontawesome.com --> <!-- Font Awesome fontawesome.com -->

nothing reported when I do that.
now click “reply” at 18:12

@mudfish what I just did was click on 'add file', 'select file', then once it's loaded tick the box to the right. Then I selected 'Insert File Into Post' (or whatever the option below  Select File says) then 'Add Reply' and the image loaded.

VIP has its own cache and specifically it doesn't cache anything for logged in users.

What's their logic here?  Obviously you've all been working on it for days and I'm on the outside looking in throwing peanuts, but I don't understand why the solution isn't to disable the wpforo cache and get on to VIP to change their caching policy?

Hoorah this time it worked

so “webp” images are perhaps unsuitable

that’s exactly what I did  mine ended up with a strange bit of html code rather than an image  - it was a “.webp” maybe those are not liked

I’ll try a std image here

i get “attached successfully” IMG_0908.png

The PSA thread won't open for me either, it just hangs.

But it does if I click on the Last Post link >

Odd. Perhaps something dodgy on the first page?

We are aware of that. It's odd for sure but we are looking at it.

If we can't fix it today for practical purposes I might suggest we start a new one.

I was going to say that it still hangs if you go into it through Last Post & then select 1 from the page dropdown, but scrap that, it does load page 1 but it's just really, really slow. There's no end of images and links on the first page along with a number of those dodgy Amazon links that display as broken Kindle pages

There's also a post that generates an internal server error at Ribble. It displays quickly if you click on it but I don't know how long the forum software tries to get hold of the image before giving up.

The caching issue has been pretty well behaved all day, but the following 2 threads seem to be "stuck" at the moment.  The forum tells me there are new posts, but isn't showing me them.

For me the forum is becoming borderline unusable.

wouldnt work from laptop this morning - adverts would load on the sides but forum was just blank. Just plain black.

on iPhone tonight I tried looking at the bike forum. List of topics loaded, clicked on the sticky bargain threads and it crashed. Had to close the tab and try again.

Next I tried clicking on the weeksy thread and it sent through a 503 error.

during the week I have replied to a few posts but you are hanging for literally minutes each time and replies can’t be seen easily.

I’m not being down on anyone but genuinely considering not even looking anymore as it is becoming painful to use.

Sorry but it’s borderline unusable for me now. Loads pages so slowly, then it loads, then freezes and darts up and down the page as if I’m scrolling, then finally settles on a random point on the page.

That's not a gliucth. That's an option in settings to either display latest posts by the latest updated topic or by the lastes actual post. I'm literally just checking it out. I don;t like it although I like how it displays the last updated reply rather then the date of the OP. I'm putting it back now - I have notes for Anthony on monday now.

Things you can do that you couldn't before:
Your edit window is 15minutes.
You now have a 5 minute delete window
Your have a preview button so you can check your post before you publish.
Pretty much all external links will render into some form of embed - Youtube etc.

...

We continue to watch the cache/update issue closely and are aware that a few of you are still seeing this glitch. You won;t be forgotten and we'll keep on it. However, we've got the forum to a functional point where we can start looking at the other things like layouts, navigation, fine tune speed etc. AND there's new functions we can start to bring online. The embeds above are an extra addon we pay for - there are other enhancements we can look at too.

I've adjusted a couple of things myself, specifically with forum index page and how they display. Just some things like font size and spacing of various things. They are minor tweaks as that's all I'm qualified to do 🙂 Anthony and Andy are the actual coders around here.

I'm happy with how it's gone this week. There's more to do.

Oh and imports are at a total of 3.2 million now of historic posts. 6.8 still to go.

I'm probably being dense, but where do I find Settings?

There's an option at the bottom of the page to find posts by Tags, but I don't see any way to add Tags to posts. Is it doable?

My settings - not yours. ie. admin settings.

Tags is something I'm considering now. I have the settings. But the last time we let you lot add your own tags it didn't necessarily go well 🙂

Maybe we should try again?

The Flickr issue is a Flickr issue. In other words there's nothing that can be done at our end.

If you notice from the Flickr URL that it doesn't actually point to a image file. It's pointing to a script on the Flickr platform rather than an actual image. It's that script that decides how the image is displayed. If you could get the link to the actual image file that would end in something like .jpg then you'd see it displays fine.

I went to your Flickr page and using Chrome inspect located the actual image file. Which was live.staticflickr.com/65535/54343582474_d0616e96ee_c.jpg

Flickr is not very good at letting you find the actual image link so you have to dig for it.

The official Flickr link does display fine on mobile BTW

Ooo it's exciting now things are starting to come together. A while back I noticed that down in the icon key there's an icon labelled Solved.

I'm assuming (hoping) that this might let the Topic Starter mark a topic as a question and, at some point in the future, mark it as solved.

As I tend to use the forum mostly for asking mechanical/bike tech. questions (I'm a bit of a muppet); I'd find this really useful. I've seen it used quite a bit on tech. forums and it's really handy, when searching for info. to see a thread asking a similar question that's marked as Solved (as opposed to those that go off at a tangent or dissolve into arguments).

Probably not a priority but perhaps something to pop on your ToDo List.

Yes, there's a function to set up a forum as a Q&A forum. AFAIK the OP would pose a question. Others would post answers and the OP gets to decide if it's been answered or 'solved'.

I appreciate you looking into this @Mark.

The Flickr issue is a Flickr issue. In other words there's nothing that can be done at our end.

So why did it work fine for years on here and also works fine on other forums?

Also why does it work fine on my mobile and not my PC?

I have no real understanding of how this stuff works, just a bit frustrating that it's suddenly stopped working.

Trail's A Stream. by Stuart-B, on Flickr

OK for anyone wanting to link a flickr picture this seems to be a relatively simple way.

To find the image file of a Flickr picture, open the photo on Flickr, click the "Download" icon, then select "View all sizes" to access the original image fileyou can then right-click on the image and select "Copy image URL" to get the image link directly.

Key steps:
  • Open the photo:
Navigate to the specific Flickr photo you want to access.

  • Click the "Download" icon:
Look for the download arrow icon usually located near the bottom of the image.

  • Select "View all sizes":
This option allows you to choose the desired image size, including the original.

  • Copy the image URL (optional):
Right-click on the image and select "Copy image URL" to get the link to the image file.

There's an image bug for images embedded into a post (rather than links). Click on an image, sometimes you get a bigger version of that image or sometimes first image in the thread. Noticed it on the weekend pics post.

Is the old forum STILL migrating and contributing towards everything taking an age to show up, or is it some other wonderful glitch now?

The traffic on EMTB forums is huge and that seems to have zero issues and was set up by a guy just into riding and reviewing bikes. Why does STW struggle finding a suitable platform, time after time?

This discussed a few pages back, and seems like it would be a two min job to fix;

Screenshot 2025-02-23 at 13.41.20.png

Every page I open, I see this and my brain goes "four new replies, WTF does that mean, how can every thread I click in have had four replies since I last opened it?".  I think in previous discussion, and I can't believe I'm writing this, it was said that the "4" here had been used in substitute for the word "for". Please fix this, it's way more confusing than the word "subscribe", and if you really don't like subscribe then you could use "follow thread".

I just presumed it was some incredibly niche subscription that emailed you last four replies to a topic.

it's 'for new replies'?

The old forum has now been migrated to the new. All old threads should now be there. We need to do some checks and fix a few things but then we’ll delete the old forum and the associated data mountain.

Andy has been working on this over the weekend out of hours to try and get us closer to fully operational.

Loving the jump to first unread post in a thread feature but it's inconsistent, even in threads I've recently participated. For example, in the latest WRPT it jumps to first unread, but in the Ukraine thread it opens page 1. I know I can jump to the last page, but that doesn't always display all the unread posts.

Super fast and snappy today. All the hard work paying off. Transitions are never easy. This one looks well worth it.

The posting delay appears to have returned. On my thread about stripping the finish off my footstool, no responses are showing for me, but the three dots menu shows two, first an hour ago and the second 25 mins.
