Just mulling over the idea of getting a new HT frame to replace my XC FS - swapping all the bits over. I don't want to spend a fortune, I'd rather like a Spesh Chisel but can't quite bring myself to pay that much for an Alloy frame, and while browsing the internets the "new" Scandal caught my eye.

Anyone got one, what are they like, how do they ride? It'd be set up with a set of 120mm Fox 34's and Hunt Proven XC carbons

I've the Vandal (think it's the same/similar geometry, but in Ti), and it works well as a light trail HT, or with a carbon rigid fork, as a gravel-plus bike packer.

So, imagine the Scandal would be fine.

The Vandal is 'only' £499 currently ...

I've had one since the pre-order, it's ace.

Running it with the forks at 140mm which improved it a lot, but that was more down to how the forks worked than geometry.

For an alloy frame it's a very smooth ride (I guess the flat top tube must help a lot) so I wouldn't inherently feel the need to spend more on the Ti version, and the only reason to go with the Huntsman would be for SS. But I can't see Scandal frame only as an option so that just leaves the Vandal anyway?

They are good fun as an 'all rounder' and ride nicely, suprisingly not that harsh but still respond well to pedalling. I used mine with rigid forks for a while as well as with 130mm and it worked really well in both configurations.

I'm having a change of build to a more XC-race focus, so I'm selling my orange frame on if you were interested? Size large/18"

I built one in September for child 1.

Built up with Fox 34s, 2.4'' tyres, Chiggle fire sale finishing kit and a splattering of XT.

It is really nice, a lot nicer than I was expecting. It is a fair chunk lighter than the Solaris that donated a lot of the parts.

The cable cover ports and tiny screws will test your patience but apart from that was an easy frame to build up - unlike the frame currently in teh stand ... grrrr.

There is a great thread on here somewhere where Brant, Brant, Brant talks about sizing. I spent ages looking at charts nad taking his advise on board etc and plumped for a L. When it arrived it looked tiny. All built up and I would be happy riding it (despite normally riding XLs) with a 50mm stem.

It has a 170mm dropper on it that is shimmed(?) down to 155mm for our lad to grow into.

The rear axle is a military grade boat anchor that if replaced would easily save 300g 🙂 🙂

Genuinely brilliant. I was also one of the pre-order here mob, and I built it up with 1x10 XT, 120mm Judies, and a whole pile of finishing kit off the disappointing Zaskar 29er I had. I put about 10k km on it before succumbing to the temptation of the £99 Ragley Marley frame in the CRC fire sale. The Scandal is (was?) undoubtedly the nicer thing to pedal. I can see me building it back up.

"New" as in not the old scandium / not-scandium V2 XC hardtails of 26"/29" yesteryear.

Although it looks like even the new one is on it's 3rd revision, there was a batch a couple of years ago with a weird gusset above the BB.

The rear axle is a military grade boat anchor that if replaced would easily save 300g ? ?

I've never weighed it, but it was an 8mm hex key which a lot of multitools won't have so for that reason alone it's probably worth getting one.

Having said that the 6mm one in my forks is mashed so maybe On-One got it right ?

Thanks folks, the other one I've seen is the Kinesis FF29, but not sure how it'd be with a 120mm fork

Looks like it'd not be a million miles off, they're quite similar.

The FF29 has 2" more stand over in what would be "large" (L3) and singlespeedable dropouts though.  If I didn't already have the Scandal, didn't want a full bike from O-O) then that would probably swing me TBH.

I had an ff29 years ago. Terrible bike but probably because their biggest bike was too small

I got the scandal on pre order. It was built as a winter bike with a cheap build. It's been used for everything and I love it and I haven't ridden the full suss since.

Its now got carbon wheels and I wouldn't be without it.
