A quick question if I may. I'm hoping to cycle across to Holy Island next week with my wife and daughter and I'm wondering how easy the causeway is to cycle. Is it very slippery? Can it be ridden safely with slickish road tyres.
Thanks in advance.

A doddle if you wait till its dry. There can be some patches of algae/weed at the island side as I recall. Only ever ridden over on MTB so never an issue but cant say what its like on slicks.

Its further than you think and a headwind can be emotional. Your mileage may vary though.

It's a normal road

As above the wind can be something else. I've struggled to pedal to get on to the islands and averaged over 30 off.

Many thanks everyone.
I guess we'll check the tide and hope for sun with no rain or too much wind.

My 9yo did it Thursday on an ancient borrowed shopper bike with slick tires no probs.

Only thing i would do different would be to get off the island before the last hour before the tide rush (not a real problem but was less atmospheric than the ride over).

It's great, one of those rides you remember.

Go early, have a good mooch.

The churchyard is nice.
Go to the little walled garden behind the castle.

Summer storm on the way back when we did it - lots of spray and standing water.
Safe but really good fun.

Nice one Wassock. Agree on the timings. Don't be first across and definitely not the last back!

I'd be more worried about sand sticking to my chain as most of the road is very sandy.

While you're there, look for the cottage where the Lindisfarne album cover (and a single cover as well judging from this) was photographed:

Choose an "up" time to go, ie you get cut off on an island for a few hours. Much quieter and more atmospheric as the quick stop tourist buses aren't there.
