We probably covered 'The Bike Snob's Guide to Cycling Tribes' when it was first published six years ago, but I was just re-reading it, and thought there were some very amusing bits.

I especially enjoyed

In fact, there's a traditional rivalry between Roadies and Mountain Bikers, which leads Mountain Bikers to do extremely irritating things like try to race Roadies who are simply out for a ride, which, if you're a Roadie, is sort of like being goaded by a hillbilly while you're browsing an art gallery.

Feeling glum? Read, or re-read, this article on our favourite hobby.

I end up re-reading the whole book every couple of months, I'd love to buy the snob a beer.

I would of thought a significant proportion of serious cyclists ride both on and off road these days. Most of the group of people I regularly ride with certainly do.

The only time I have noticed any rivalry between groups is on forums like this when a "miserable roadie didn't wave at me today" or "should I wear lycra on my MTB" thread comes up.

@forzafkawi: you are probably right, BUT this is an edited piece from six years ago, and a lot has changed in six years. Did you know, for example, that Joe Cocker had died? I didn't.

In any case, it is meant to be light-hearted.

Brilliant article! Not read that before - "they have a tendency to get "stoked" about things and actually seem to enjoy themselves when they ride." Love it.

I've noticed on my commute that roadies really don't like being overtaken by someone on a mountain bike in jeans, and will usually pass again shortly after.

he should have a section on the cycling forum 'tribe'

how about something along the lines of

'these fall into three categories

people looking for info and ideas
people sharing info and ideas
people trying to be offended or trying to get into a fight'

Try taking a "serious fixie" rider off the lights with a Borris Bike! Only time I've ever had a punishment pass from a cyclist. Shame they are so low geared really.

Some hipster wannabe* wearing jeans with turnups and polished shoes etc riding some new hybrid bike dared overtake me on my commute ht the other evening. Kept up with him for a while and dropped him on the traffic lights while I laughed hysterically on the cycle path popped up the kerb and road uphill past the police station on the pavement, ha ha ha. lol.

*only a wannabe as he lacked black oily beard.

On the compatibility of Tri-athletes

Compatibility with other cyclists: Can occasionally mix with Roadies, like when you see a couple of pigeons hanging out with a bunch of seagulls.

Well I fall somewhere between "the righteous cyclist" and "the mountain biker" who apparently hate each other. So I hate myself. But then I knew that anyway.
