I thought you may enjoy this piece of news from Brazil.

In Brazil there are a growing number of campaigns to get people on to bikes, and in a number of cities bike paths are being introduced which is great.

However, there is still a huge amount of education needed, and many drivers do not respect cyclists on the road, and many believe that they should not be there.

The pollution and traffic problems in São Paulo are absolutely terrible, but today the government here officially said that cyclists should not be cycling on the roads. Their solution to deaths of cyclists, and there have been a few here this year in São Paulo already, is to tell people that they should only be cycling in parks. (Some public parks here have cycle paths, which is great if you have young children and want them to cycle safely).

In theory, there is a law which says cars should give cyclists 1.5m of overtaking space, but the government and legal situation, if I have understood the newspapers correctly, is that if a cyclist is hit by a car, it is the fault of the cyclist whatever.

So still a long way to go before the government here begins to get the concept of the bicycle!
