Just over a week away, how's everyone feeling?

I don't feel ready at all and know i'm going to struggle. I've never done the Dyfi before but did the Ard Rock Marathon last September. I know i'm not as fit as I was then and have left the training too late. I'm expecting the Dyfi to be harder, anyone done both and care to comment?

Any other tips for a newbie?

I entered as an incentive to get myself in shape again and do more riding... it didn't work, and I have barely done anything!
Still on the fence as to whether I'm actually going to do it or not...
I did it about 10 years back when I was a lot fitter and I remember it being pretty tough then...

I bought a ticket from the classifieds in a spur of the moment bit of madness. I thought this was just a picturesque 35 mile ride with sausage rolls and beer....should I be worried?

I'm doing it again this year and can't wait. The last time was 2008 I think and again I've done not a jot of training.
You'll be fine.
Just make sure you get back before the showers run out of hot water, cause it's not nice otherwise. 🙂

I am not doing it this year but have done it 6 or 7 times in the past. I have done the Ard Rock All Mountian challenge twice too and can safely say the Dyfi is a lot harder. However, its not a race so just take it easy and enjoy it (if you can, its tough)....

If you don't get sorted I can lend you a bike. You're not getting out of it that easy 🙂

We have booked sun haven't we?

It pissed it down non-stop last year and it was great fun 🙂

Can't do it this year, gutted. It's one of my fav events, but baby due very soon. Such a fun long weekend away for the whole family. Last year was filth, but I think it was my best one lol!

I'll be there. Done it umpteen times before, couldn't be bothered with the 5 hour drive last year and was so miserable at mayday weekend that my wife insisted I do it this year!
I'll be on an ugly grey Five and riding with a large man on an ancient Cannondale Prophet, he has a habit if squealing like an excited schoolgirl when riding downhills. I apologise on his behalf if he scares anyone.

I think this is my seventh. First one was ten years ago. In the worst shape yet, and currently have a bad back. But I'm sure it will be ok on the day.

Spent a while this morning reading up on cramp prevention, dyfi cramp is evil.

And I'll be riding my ancient robin mather with unfashionable wheel size and unfashionable angles.

I wondered about this having bought a second hand ticket so I sent them a message on Facebook. The reply I received suggested they hadn't sent out any info yet but it would be on Facebook when they do.

If anyone has received sign in location, time, etc type info please share 🙂

I'm in, first time for me. Not really done any major miles this year but got a decent-length ride in the other day to shake things out and check I wasn't going to die on my arse. My legs kept the pedals turning ok, so I'm looking forward to it now. 😀

I,m in doing it on a geared bike after years of rigid ss and last years effort on my fattie would have rode the fattie again but my dropper is away to be replaced!
See you in the beer tent to the early hours

I'm always conflicted by the Dyfi.As a ride it's a bit rubbish.Endless fire roads followed by mincer congested downhills (and 'racing' it is worse). As an event it's awesome.I might skip the riding bit and just do the good bits.

Cloudnine a fair bit of it OK, but some bits will be challenging, as in get off and walk.....
Only done it once - last year the weather was shite and I had a stinking cold, but it's live to do it again, the trails round there are mint

Done both. The Marathon was a grind and didn't really enjoy it. The Dyfi is hard but the downs make up for the climbs. Great fun. And the atmosphere is way better

Just received a Dyfi email.

Didn't do it last year and no fitness this year. 30 mile jaunt happening this Sunday to at least do a little prep.

I've done it twice, first time had a couple of puncture disasters early doors and ended up right at the back but all the descents were clear. lastime rode mid pack and the descents were a congested minceathon. id suggest taking a picnic, maybe a beer, set off from machylenth and then kick back after the first climb and sit in the sun for an hour to let everyone get out of the way.

I've done it a few times, took a wrong turn last year on the final descent but still beat my mate 8)

Really looking forwards to it, dry would be nice and not too hot.

Doing it for the first time and really looking forward to it. Been trying to build up some miles with climbs the last few weeks, think I've only succeeded in making myself knackered! I'll get round one way or another, but it might be dark by the time I finish. Main worry at the mo is sandwicheater sorting a bike out, I need someone to talk to at the back!
I haven't heard anything from dyfi or stuweb, but our names are on the entry list on the site so should be all good, I'm planning on just following dazh around all weekend anyway to make sure we're in the right place at the right time.

On a more social note, is the fri/sat/sun night spent wholly in the beer tent, or do we need to bring beers / whiskey / jager and campfire equipment?

If you're local or in the area we (YstwythCC MTB) are doing our traditional pre-ride round the course this Sunday (tomorrow), meeting at 10:00 am at the climachX trailhead carpark :). Simply riding round waiting for last rider at bottom of descents and tops of climbs, lunch stop at the feed station and then repeat on the way back. Chilled out ride to see how trails are riding and spot any cheeky lines. Due to being as quick as the slowest rider it is an all day job to most of day, though obviously actual ride times will differ

I'm in. Second time after last year I thought it can't be any worse weather wise. Got a couple of shows booked too and plenty of miles in as part of mayhem solo training so looking forward to it. Could have done without mild concussion, a beautiful black eye and the stiffest shoulder I've ever had after a 28.4mph ( according to garmin) front wheel disappearing act last weekend but I'll be fine by then. A&E said I should really avoid banging my head again for awhile though so if I'm mincing a bit I apologise now. I'll be in my team Longsac top riding bright orange orbea, come say hi.

Pretty much, and most of the day too 🙂

Campfires aren't allowed, but think BBQs are ok as long as they're off the ground. Probably worth bringing your own beer too for the times we're not in the beer tent. (Did I mention that it's quite a boozy event?)

Anyway, after spending the last couple of years trying not to be too hungover for the ride in pursuit of personal bests (and still doing sh*t!), this year I'm going to enjoy myself. Just have to keep repeating to myself 'It is not a race!'.

The email I got on Friday says no bbq's of any kind...in red type!!

Allso to those who don't like to be held up on the downs; just ride more quickly to escape the crowds; or wait at the back if you can't make it up the ups as quickly as the more xc riders. Personally I've always enjoyed the fact that every type of rider joins in at the Dyfi!

Yeah, Climachx (with maybe a preview of the last descent of the enduro) I reckon. If you can get the Friday off a couple of us are going to do either Snowdon or Penmachno on the Friday too.

I stand corrected on the BBQs 🙂

Saturday forecast looks good. Sunday is now saying "light rain" rather than "heavy rain".
It'll be reet.
(and will never be as good as the 10th anniversary one which was bone dry)

Still in provided an elaborate plan with planes, trains and housemates works.

I've been working away for pretty much all of April. The only thing I've managed even vaguely close to organised physical exertion was 40 minutes in a mosh pit last week :/

Anyone selling places has to do so by midnight tonight to have the names changed on the entry list, unless you're happy to ride as someone else I suppose

This is going to be my first one, never having managed to get an entry before.

Hoping to come down and camp the night before, though more realistically it'll be an early start on the day...

Will be taking it easy up the climbs in way too much bike, looking forward to the descents though from what I've heard.

the big question is fast tyres to make the long climbs less painfull or something with some grip as near the end after about 800 bikes go through it'll be a little sloppy ???

Given the forecast for Sunday there's not a tyre in the known universe that will deal with that sort of slop. 🙂

TBH the only bad bit is the final descent on the extra loop. The fireroads were more of a problem as they were sodden and felt like riding through treacle. I'll be running an ardent on the front, Nobby's Nic on the back.

Just for info: They have just posted this message on their Facebook page regarding transfers, etc:

Just to be clear, we have now closed rider edits. Entries are no longer transferable. Riders may not ride under someone else's name or number. There is a legal issue in that you are signing the disclaimer under a false name, also we really don't want to using the wrong details if we have contact your emergency number.

Well how did you all get on?
After all my worrying about my lack of regular riding let alone training for the Dyfi, plus the forecast weather, which I didn't think was all that bad I was doing well til just before half way when my tyre exploded.
It was like a bloody rifle going off. 😯
I was hoping a new tube would get me to the finish but the cut in sidewall was a good 3 inches and the tube stuck out a mile getting sliced on the front mech so that was it.
Got picked up by the toasty warm Discovery (a big thanks to you two) after about 45 minutes freezing and then back in the special bus. 🙂
I loved it. Even if didn't get a mug.

Really enjoyed it inspite of the weather, no mechanicals unlike last year which was nice too. Just over 3h15 for the (not so) long route.

The nice bloke from Wrexham I rode back to the arena with was wondering how his 16yr old son had got on, 4th apparently. 16?! Good lad.

Oh, and as per every year, more khazis in the campsite please.

4h17: I did the full route, only just made it to the cutoff in time, was pretty ****ed by that point but had to have a go. Final descent was pretty horrible and I was in bits and had to stop to shake cramp out of my legs, but I didn't die and didn't come dead last. I'm happy with that given that I've done pretty much bugger all in the way of getting the miles in. Ace course otherwise, the rest of the descents were brilliant fun.

I think that was the wettest ride I've ever done. I've done ones with heavier rain, but never over four hours of non-stop precipitation. I've just left everything in the van and am considering just setting fire to the bloody thing to save having to excavate all the mud out of it. But I'll be back next year I think, and hopefully the organisers will book some decent weather... 😀

Why, oh why, did I opt for my non waterproof shorts when the waterproof ones were an option at breakfast??? Still cleaning the silt out of my eyes. I had a great time, some fantastic descents which were earned on the climbs. 🙂

Same reason I did, it didn't look like the rain would amount to much...I must have been carrying a couple of kilos of silt and water in my clothing by the end 🙂 Good event, think I was mad to drive over 200 miles for such a soaking. Love all the zombies and other random stuff but can't believe the beer wasn't even a half or that some people turned it down!

4:20 on the short course for me. Lost 20 minutes or so waiting at the top of the first climb for a mate who I didn't end up seeing until the end.
Was very wet, but didn't rain as much as I feared it would.
Bloody loved the riding as usual, apart from the first descent, I timed it lucky and had very little traffic on the Singletrack, result! My 12th Enduro, first proper wet one and first one on a full-sus bike in 8 years. Loved it.

That'll be my mate and his lad who is the 16yr old in question, he's rapid to be fair and has a big future ahead of him.

I did the long route and got round in 3hr 38mins which I'm. Happy with considering the lack of riding I've managed this year and the damn draggy wet fire roads.

Just seen the results, 04:10:38 on the short course and I must have just missed the cut off. Slightly annoying as I could have got there earlier but I'm not sure I needed any more.

I see Chipps Chippendale was there with a VIP 'over 1000' number.

Just out of interest, I fancy doing this event next year, is it doable on a Parkwood with a 120mm fork, or do I need to ride a 140mm+ gnarpoon full susser not to die!?

You'd be fine, there was nothing that demanded full suspension but the comfort may be nice. I was on a hardtail as were many, many others.

It's not a gnarpoon 'nduro event, its an Endurance event where the whole thing is timed.

You'll be fine on a bike with 120mm travel, the vast majority of the fast guys are on 100mm XC HT's or XC FS bikes.

With all the climbing shorter travel is beneficial IMHO. I did it this year on a 100mm XC 29'er FS, previously on a 100mm XC 29'er HT.

There are plenty of gnarpoons about, but that's 'cos they're popular bikes, not 'cos of the type of event.

I'd rate it as wetter and muddier than last year, but still good fun with great banter all around the course. Only downside for me was I had fireroad grit get into my shorts and I didn't notice until I got into the shower. I've now got some rather tender bits.

Wettest one ever for me (missed the last few years).

Went round with my mate who is road fit, but this was his 4th time on an MTB! He got round and stayed in one piece!

I was running an old school 9 spd triple and lost granny ring after the descent off the moor. I think a stone must have damaged a tooth and it just kept chainsucking after that. So middle ring for the rest of the ride for me!

Cheers to Tegid and Fraz and the rest of the team. Best event yet IMHO.
