The Cross Cartel
These look like the very things that I need to get me back out on my bike, consistently. Around 100 miles away from me so not just around the corner. Does anybody know the areas well and can advise if they're worth the journey? I'll have to invest in a GPS but I'd like to ride it on the day that each ride is advertised to show some support to the shop. Free to enter is refreshing although I'm not usually a fan of mass participation sportive type things. I get the feeling these are quite low key.

Nope. Can't seem to get a link to work.
They are free pre-planned GPS cyclocross/gravel/XC rides/routes from the Ludlow area, on days when, as far as I can tell, bike manufacturers will be having demo days.
I suppose my question is, is a 200 mile round trip worth it for the terrain these rides encounter, bearing in mind that there is very little in my Peak District locality that is comfortable on my 'cross bike.
It's a shame the link won't work. Cut and paste to Google works though

Laureen's ride in Cheshire is good for cross bikes if you're looking for a route closer to home, plus it is signposted so you don't even need a gps.

Those epic cycles rides look good, mind - stuff like that is good to get you out riding new places and the Shropshire hills, Welsh marches are a nice part of the world. I guess the route is by definition fairly mellow, so it's harder to justify the travel as it's not hard to find that sort of riding.
All depends on your attitude to driving to events - some folk will drive 100 miles for a MTB ride like it's nothing, really motivated to ride new parts of the country. For others it takes a special occasion to put the bike in the car.

Thank you for the help with the link and for the opinion expressed. The March event is on a Sunday so I could ride over on Saturday, take part on the Sunday and get the train direct to Stockport afterwards. I've ordered an Element Bolt so I'm going to give it a go, I think. The location looks lovely and I don't know anything of the area. I'm quite excited, to be honest.
Thanks again.
