You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
My 456 simply won't die. It won't even get a little bit poorly.
Having just returned from a week in the Cairngorms (where it was showing the FS 29ers how it's done) i decided to have a quick look over the bike and address some of the niggles it's developed. I'd prepared myself to spend some cash to get it perfect again. Here is a short summary of the events following:
Stiff headset; stripped, cleaned, re-greased and reassembled. Now perfect.
Graunchy bottom bracket; stripped, cleaned, re-greased and reassembled. Now perfect.
Sticky freehub; stripped, cleaned, re-greased and reassembled. Now perfect.
This bike has remained essentially unchanged since i built it, some four years ago. Since then it's been ridden every day to work-and-back, as well as being thrashed around the hills most weekends. Amazing, really.

Nothing like sorting out the niggles on a bike, always amazing how much difference it makes. Good on you Sir for not splashing out like the bike companies wish.
That's a great post
Sounds like triggers broom to me.
Good innit. I keep thinking I'll try 1x10 or singlespeed when my gears have had it, but after 3 years or so including winter commuting and 2x Kielder 100s they are still fine. Cheapo 8spd cassette and Deore triple chainset. The rear mech is about 10 years old and came off my old Hardrock - still works fine.
I too have a habit of eeeking a few more miles out of something. Clicking BB this morning - quick strip of cranks, lift seals, clean with cloth and paste in some new grease. Re-assemble = smooooth and silent.
Good work OP.
