I am a Mountain Biker - as i imagine are you. As such, i enjoy cycling in various environments, for extended periods of time. Furthermore, i have spent a not-inconsiderable proportion of my disposable income on various pieces of cycling paraphernalia. How ironic then, that the bicycle aboard which i spend most of my riding miles always gets ridden in the same place and is a hack that i built from spare/knackered parts i had lying around in the garage.
This, i suspect, is the case for a lot of people. So come now, let us spend some time to appreciate that battered old machine that faithfully carries us about our business, yet is rarely spared the luxury of cleaning / servicing / being stored under cover.
This is mine. Built around a frame that cost £50 brand new, and came with a free seatpost, seat, seatclamp and bottom bracket! The forks were donated by a mate (now starting to rust) and the cranks were donated by a different mate. The wheels and tires were £30 second hand, and the pedals were £5 brand new from the LBS. The most expensive part on the bike is the brakes, which were bought when i first started mountain biking. I soon realised that i didn't get on with integrated brakes / shifters, so i bought some new ones.
This poor old machine was built up about 4 years ago, and has remained unchanged ever since! The chain broke the other week, and instead of buying a new one, i re-used an old stretched one i had buried in the back of the garage!
