Anyone used the bike club before? The prices don’t seem too bad (less than a few pints a month) and will mean it is easy to upgrade over time as the little one grows (he is currently 5). Other option is taking a risk on used. I am happy to spend money getting him a bike as he gets older but this seems a good option over the next couple of years as he grows quickly and the bikes won’t last. Any thoughts or experience?

It looks a valid option but more for convenience than cost. There's a bit of a play to the notion that modern children cannot enjoy cycling unless they have a perfectly fitting lightweight bike which is just not true.

In reality, most kids can probably get 2 years out of a bike if you size and change at the right time and there are tons of Frogs and Islabikes out there on eBay and gumtree so it's worth weighing up the cost and convenience factors of buying and reselling 2nd hand Vs a rental scheme.

I go the 2nd hand route with my son, he’s a bit big for his current one but I put a longer seat post on - a nice Thomson one I had spare :). Got his next bike ready so hopefully big enough for that soon.

Yeh I don’t really know which way to go. I don’t want to get Halfords things as they are pretty awful. He has a ridgeback mx14 at the moment. Been trying to find a mx16 on Facebook or gumtree but no luck locally. Started looking at frog or Isla but both are still expensive second hand. His current height puts him on a frog 52 but he only needs to grow 3cm and he would be on a frog 55 hence he isn’t going to have the next one long but he needs something soon for the summer. Tough to decide what to do!
