Only felt like a short ride today, so we picked the last ride from this guidebook:

Helwith Bridge - Wharfe - Crummack Lane - Borrins - Horton in Ribblesdale.

Damn, the couple we spoke to at Wharfe were right - the guidebook has got it wrong and we should have done it the other way round - most of the descending is on bloody tarmac!

Mr Ashcrofts' guides are pretty spot on usually - but if anyone else fancies this one, anticlockwise is definitely the way to go.........

The drop from Crummack Dale back to Wharfe would have been a stunner.

I'd not bother with that way either, there are much better routes in the area. Start in Clapham, head along Thwaite Lane and over Flascoe Bridge to Feizor (good caff there), then over past Chris E's place at Higher Bark House to Wharfe, Crummack Lane and up GBH onto Long Scar, then a blistering DH back to Clapham (easy ride). If you're not averse to FPs take in a loop over Moughton Scar too. Or a tour of Pen-y-Ghent etc etc

yes, very fast and swoopy. I sometimes do that instead of Long Lane, though the latter is a much bigger downhill.

Ta for that Simon - have done loads in the area, but never Crummack Lane, so we thought we'd give it a pop.

Have found this series of guidebooks to be pretty invaluable - great for those without loads of local knowledge, but this route was a rare miss.

Did the tour of Pen-Y-Ghent a couple of weeks ago - lovely ride and yes, the drop down Long Lane to the junction at Helwith Bridge is a cracker.

if I'd been asked to carefully miss out all the best bits of the area I'd have come up with that 🙂

Ah, it wasn't that bad! The climb was interesting and the views were pretty good.

The drop down to Borrins was a bit disappointing, but you can't have everything 😀

Trout, that's a bit harsh! 🙂

We've done most of the Dales routes from the first book:

and they're great. Wouldn't fancy riding up to the Tan Hill Tavern on the bridleway and back down the road, or climbing the Lady Ann Clifford Highway from the North and descending the Southern bit. 🙂

I'll just put this one down to a bad day in the office for J A.
