If anyone has any serviceable bikes they don't need now is a great time to get them sold. Very poor availability of cheap new stuff and loads of folk wanting to get out CV19 and good weather.

I'd kept my old full sus mainly because it was basically worthless when I tried to sell a few years back. It still rode well, just the wrong wheel size and old-ish school geometry.

Stuck it up for sale on facebook marketplace and was basically beating people away with a shitty stick. It was collected, gone cash in hand (full whack) in 2 hours.

I've got about half a dozen bikes I should get rid of, might see about getting them ready for sale at the weekend. Combination of old kids bikes (one 24" wheeled and one 26" wheeled with a small frame) plus some nicer road stuff - although I doubt my spare TT bike will be as easy to sell as the others!

Not a clue what to sell them at though? Nicest one is a Boardman Team Carbon from about 2010 with 2x10 SRAM Rival (barring an Apex rear mech and an 11:32 cassette that I switched to because I'm old and feeble) but otherwise standard apart from GP4000's and some clip-on aero bars. Good nick as it hasn't actually been used that much as I got a Roubaix soon afterwards. Anyone got a clue what I should try and sell that for?

It's kind of variable tho, as i've had a frame (and other stuff) for sale at well under 1/2 new price, which has had very little interest.

Agreed. I was asked to value a 17 year old Allez up for a friend who wanted to sell hers. There just happend to be the same bike listed on eBay so waited to see what that went for. 17 years old, described as "In need of TLC"...it went for almost half its 2003 RRP!

She sold a kids bike, the Allez and a 2004 full suss within a day.

@tomd Was it a trek fuel IIRC?

I've got some XT M8000 brakes I'll punt on ebay, nothing else I need rid of really, pared everything down to a full susser and a commuter a few years back.

I'm not on Facebook. Any other suggestions of where the best place is to sell?

I'll try gumtree, but will probably have to get my shit together and register on eBay.

Same goes for kids bikes, sold the little ones balance bike within two hours of the eBay listing going live 👍

From a quick look on Ebay it appears my Boardman Team Carbon is maybe worth around £400, which I think is half what I paid for it new (I think it was about £1000 list at the time but I got it in a Halfords sale).

Facebook marketplace has worked better for me than Gumtree.
I've sold 7 bikes, including 1 for a friend, over the past few weeks and got ambitious prices for all of them.
Be quick though because as furlough is reigned in, the perceived free money and time sat around doing nothing will reduce and take demand with it.

Hmmm. I think I need to get on ebay then!

I've got my daughter's scooter that she didn't get on with at all in the garage. We tried to sell it a while back & had no interest at all.

There's also her Banana bike that she's just upgraded from (full pedal power now).

I've got a Weeride seat in the garage too & a ton of bits like handlebars etc. that I keep meaning to get rid of, as well as some clothing - gripgrab gloves, some TSG t-shirts etc.

Will go someway to financing a 1x11 upgrade on my Stumpjumper & some new brakes!

You've missed those by a few months.

It'll be interesting to see how the weather affects demand now.

I'm looking forward to Autumn when all these bikes come back on the market - won't be long before the traffic increases rapidly and people feel unsafe on the roads. Then it gets cold and wet and dark - and the appeal isn't so great!

I've dipped my toes back in the market, Usually only sell on here. Advertised top spec bikes at a price I thought was reasonable on here and Pinkbike and both went very quickly The S Works Enduro was sold within minutes on Pinkbike and met up with cash and collected within the hour. I'm having more luck with full bikes than splitting. Might even build the S Works Stumpjumper back up just to see

1980s Raleigh Pioneers going for £100?

Old Dawes Galaxy? £400-£500?

Never seen so many, it must be the great shed-emptying of 2020

Just sold a 2013 Specialized Rockhopper on Ebay for £450. It was only £600 new. It was well looked after with a few upgrades but still, I was only hoping for around £200. If it wasn't for the fact I might struggle to replace it with something decent I'd be tempted to sell my 2018 Giant Trance 2.

I'm looking at it completely differently, and hoping that this is a sliding doors moment for many of those new cyclists and that they'll keep it going once we return to whatever normal is, no interested in 2nd hand bargains.

My wife is now cycling the 6 miles through town to the hospital every day, would never have considered it pre-CV19, as the cycle route is a joke and the main road was a scary concept for her. This has given her the confidence of riding on that road, and the slow and steady switching on of traffic levels has meant she's not noticed a sudden danger. She's now talking of getting winter kit together, lights, waterproofs etc.

It's brilliant.

We put a 4th hand Islabike CNOC 16 on at the weekend, we had an offer of £185 and it had been picked up with 24 hours. More than we paid for it last year. Wish I had more to sell.

No question. Every ride is a delight at the moment, seeing so many cyclists out riding and I don't even get grumpy when some my favourite spots have turned into something of an obstacle course!

Clearly, it won't all be sustained (sadly, the rapid increase in traffic levels will not encourage some leisure riders - last night felt worryingly normal on the roads), but my hope is that a decent percentage of them will continue to ride even after we return to normal life and that will be a great thing.

Still hoping to pick up an ex-dentist F12 in the autumn for half price though 😉

Rose tinted refers to looking back at better times, we've never had a great cycling culture, I'm more of an eternal optimist tbh.

OTOH, I just picked up a barely used kids bike (genuinely looks like it's not been used!) for less than half retail.

I did pinkbike and Facebook and sold within 12 hours. Facebook got loads more attention but I linked to the pinkbike ad.

12 photos showing every little chip and scratch I could fine and I was probably overly critical about the bike, honesty is the best way. That also means he can’t come back and complain about any thing after.

Wondering if it’s worth selling my good bike as well while the going is good

I got £1k and I think I'd have maybe got £600-£700 pre lockdown.

@Nobeerinthefridge. Yeah it was, good bike still liked riding it and worked well it was just getting used little and far between. Hopefully be a good bike for someone to get into riding over the summer.

Got a Stanton Sherpa, which will more than do for all my current riding needs. I wanted to put the funds from the sale to a new fork but just looked at prices, ooft. Not a good time to be bike bit shopping.

@thegeneralist IME Facebook is the quickest way to get rid of stuff and get actual cash, avoiding fees and payapl faff. Facebook absolutely does my head in so I just uninstall it after I've sold stuff. Maybe if the bike is a bit higher end then it wouldn't be so good but for sub £500 just seems like the best way to sell these days.

I think less that and more people want a 'normal' bike. I tried to sell a singlespeed commuter with dynamo, guards, etc and got no interest at all apart form someone asking if I would sell the dynamo and light separately. However older 26" mountainbikes seem to be selling for what would be silly money.

I bet if you tried to sell a 29er Xc bike you would get not much more than it was worth last year because the market for decent bikes hasn't changed. If you tried to sell a 26" XC bike from 8 years ago it would probably get a decent price though as people just want a bike to ride around with their kids.

it is wild.

I got rid of a very tired but still vaguely functioning 2005 specialized enduro via gumtree. Needed new frame bearings (lots of them on an enduro), forks serviced, shock serviced, new chain/cassette/chainrings.

Within 20 minutes of posting the advert i'd had about twenty people wanting it, including some offering more than I was asking. By the time it was collected i'd had maybe 70 messages.

Sold it to someone who did a round trip of about 90 miles and gave me 20% more than advertised - suspect i could easily have got twice as much!

wild

Yeah agree Tinas I really struggled to sell a tidy singlespeed dynamo commuter bike for £100 on Facebook/Gumtee. It was a handy bike, ended up giving it away.

I suppose a 26" bike is only old if you're aware of all the 27.5 nonsense. Plenty folk will just want a bike and have a few hundred in cash sitting about that would have gone on pubs/holidays/events.

Hmmm,

I fished these out of the garage 2 weeks ago intending to flog them as their owners went and got bigger:

But they are now being used as "Garden bikes" and have drummed up a lot of enthusiasm for riding again...

The "washing line to fence and back TT" Is now a hotly contested event, as is the "Beach bucket slalom"...
I fear I might just miss the great covid bike bubble, but it's a price worth paying TBH...

@himupstairs do you mind if I ask what you got for the enduro? I have a simillar vintage stumpy that I'm either going to sell complete or frame and shock only and use the parts for a hardtail build. It was fully rebuilt a year ago with new frame bearings and drive train, suspension serviced along with all other moving parts and only had about a dozen rides since.

Doh, this is cutting both ways though. Nightmare trying to replace the bike you're selling either used or new.

I'm going to have to pass up a sale as I'd be left with no commuter. Darn.

Was very keen on a £900 Boardman SLR 8.9c on CycleScheme but Halfords sold out months ago.

Anyone want to lend me a bike until shops get stock again.....

Jordan, having listed for £300 i sold for £360. Reckon that could easily have been 5-600, maybe more, but I already felt a bit like I was taking the piss! I underestimated demand somewhat..

Ebay would have been more lucrative, as would splitting for parts, but I wanted a quick and easy local sale. Honestly the bike owed me nothing and was pretty worn out.

I've been looking for a budget one for a while, and yes, quite a few Planet-x carbons seemed to go through ebay and not meet their reserves at ~£400 even with carbon wheels. There's been a few on there for £600-700 with alloy clinchers but happy to wait it out till a no reserve bargain pops up.

Missed one on facebook last week, not a frame brand I'd ever heard of, but had a set of mavic ellipse wheels and basic alipna kit for £150!

Managed to pick up a 24" commencal meta HT for my eldest for £150 which was reosonable. The lady told me she had tons of messages but let me have it because I was first, so I paid full asking for it.

Oldest had his new bike so the youngest got the 20" hand me down, so I put his 16" frog bike up for sale for £140 and sold it within a day for full asking so basically cost me £10 to move them both to bigger bikes!

The I thought I was really pushing my luck as I had a crap carrera hybrid that I bought to take on holiday a few years back to ride with the kids. I had fitted some avid brakes and better shifters from the spares box. I I took all these off and then put it up for sale for £25 with no shifter or brake cables and not even brake pads and I had people biting my arm off! Could have easily sold it for £50 which is what I paid about 4 years ago when it was fully working 😂

I'd give it a go - unless it's real high end stuff, it will sell with a carefully worded advert and lots of decent pictures. Especially of marketed as a hipster fixie.

I think full bikes from recognisable brands are the ones selling best - Joe or Sarah Average just wants a working bike from a make they've vaguely heard of that they can get out and about on.

I bought a new old stock 2016 GT Grade Tiagra from Hargreaves Cycles last week for less than people are asking for them used. Also picked up an immaculate full 3x10 Tiagra-equipped Planet X Kaffenback with new wheels for the OH from eBay on Sunday for £207, so the bargains are still out there.

I've had people asking me if I'd sell my Voodoo Hoodoo while I was out riding it, more than once! It's had one or two upgrades (Brand X dropper, hand-me-down RaceFace crank) but unless you're really into your bikes it looks completely stock, hasn't stopped one guy offering £500 for it. If I could easily replace it I would but it's worth more to me now than I could get for it. Strangely no approaches when I've taken the Fuel EX out.

It's a bonkers bubble. I just hope that bike shops don't over order now and then end up with loads of discounted bikes later on.

I sold my 2017 Canyon Endurace at the weekend for 80% of what I paid for it! And that's with some minor cosmetic damage. It's absolutely crazy. I felt guilty taking that much money for it.

I've got my Enduro bike up in eBay now. Hadn't really thought about selling, but with the prices things are getting now and the fact I'm not doing any gnarly riding at the mo, it seems like an ideal time to get maximum price, and get an order in for a 2021MY bike!

It’s a crap time to be buying. I’ve been looking for a cheap gravel thing so I can build up fitness riding on local towpaths and bridleways. The MTB isn’t getting ridden at the moment as I can’t do hills (chest infection has knocked me on my arse).

There are still some cheap bikes out there. Search eBay by category "Sporting `goods / Bike", select within 20 miles (or however far you want to go to collect) and look through all the listings as most will be pickup only being a bike and not something easy to send

People are still very bad at posting and I still see the title as "Bike' rather than make and model so won't be found via search so this way you get to see everything.

You will, I've seen several sell this week and the cheapest went for £220, 26", rim brakes. My wife's is currently at £74 with 8 days to go and 30+ watchers.

Give it a good clean, plenty of good quality pictures, and make sure you put no buy it now in the advert, you'll still get asked but not every 5 minutes 😀

I put my Croix de fer up on Facebook market place yesterday and have not had a sniff. I put a full description and a few photos and set the price similar to what I've seen on other ads for similar bikes in a similar condition. Maybe the bubble has burst and I missed it or maybe the average Joe has never heard of Genesis or more likely, I'm asking too much for it 🤔

I'll give it till Monday and if I still don't have any interest by then I'll slash the price as although I'm not riding it, it's a great bike and could be used by someone to get them to work or to improve their health.

That's strange I've just got an offer on my bike, not one of you guys? It's a bit cheeky as it's a fair wack less than the asking price but I suppose you don't get if you don't ask.

Just to put this in context, a mate of mine is after a new hybrid in about the 800 quid range. I asked for recommendations on here a few days ago.

Everything that was recommended is out of stock, with none expected until August. And I do mean absolutely everything. There is nothing decent in stock anywhere

@didnthurt

Have you checked what marketplaces it's listed on facebook and the location is correct? If it's on the general marketplace should be lots of takers I'd think.

Sometimes you can set it so it's only on the buy and sell page for your village or something and will get limited interest.

Sold my diamond back rigid singlespeed 29er within 5 mins of putting it on facebook market place yesterday. Had 7 people chasing it until it was collected, can't help but think that some people are buying to sell on again.

Will test the water at the weekend on the recognised brands front as I am going to list my Dialled Bikes Prince Albert.

Lots of that going on but happens with most things.

I think the guy who enquired about my bike is tyre kicker, he says "he's only looking for a pal" and that "he's not really after that type of bike"
Or could just be chancing his arm.

Thinking about it, you could make a few hundred a week cash in hand by being first to make an offer below the price and then selling it again the next week at the original sellers price.

Interesting I have a pristine condition 26″ Scott Spark with full XTR groupset (9 sp) in the shed, which I assumed was basicaly worthless…

One sold for £950 in April but as you think it was basically worthless I will give you £100 to get it out of the way 🙂

Hey mister! Can I have a shot of your bike? (Always had a soft spot for the Scott Spark but never had one).

My Croix de fer is a 56, I’m in West Lothian. I’m 5’11” and fits me fine.

Too big and a bit too far 😕

The lady at the Post Office greeted me this morning with "more bike stuff" and I have to go back tomorrow.

Might be the right time to sell a Turbo Levo, with the Levo SL due to be picked up, just had a new motor, battery and chain in the last month.

You aren't wrong:

That's close to its new price in 1994!

Is there an issue with selling a bike on ebay for collection and then taking payment via Paypal in advance?

If they collect can they then claim they never got the bike ? And then try a Paypal claim?

In which case do I need a photo of them putting the bike in their car!?

If anyone is looking to buy new under 1k I'd suggest looking at decathlon. They have a 105 roadie 11sp with cable brakes for 750 at the mo, and there was a decent MTB the similar money, if you can get past the pressfit BB.

I hired a Decathlon alloy rim brakes road bike when in Italy last year. I was very impressed with it. It had 105 gears and brakes and handled really well, not as nice as my Ritchey logic but then the Decathlon is less than half my Ritchey cost.

They can claim they've not received it. The only proof PayPal will accept is proof of delivery by a courier to their registered address. No amount of photos will help. To my knowledge, you should be OK with Paypal gift, as I think that's the same as a bank transfer (eBay might not give you that option though), but I would always go with bank transfer if they were picking up in person.

To be clear DO NOT let them use PayPal goods and services if you aren't using a courier.
