As expected loks like major headwinds down glen afric. Liams slowed right down on what should be a fast downhill.

Will see what speed the others take down it at and that will tell if its wind or bonk.

What's the longest last day anyone's done?

24 hours 🙂

fraser MacBeath pulled a 32 hr stint from Fisherfield to finish last year I think. He looked asleep on his feet in Strathcarron at tea time, but kept plodding.

Ah yes, should have zoomed in before asking 🙂

Took a tandem ride to Cannich today. Sat on the riverbank at Struy bridge enjoying a coffee and a loaded rider pootled past.
Weird coincidence thought I, what with the HT on and all these racers passing through a couple of days ago.

Checked when I got home and it was Matt Orton, going at the sort of civilised pace I'd like to do the HTR at, taking a fortnight or thereabouts 🙂

What a shame after a great effort.

Now the lead group are going to quickly knock off when knackered what the rest of us would think of as an epic when fresh.

I realised when dot watching that not everyone's tracker is updating at the same time so it's quite hard to get a closer picture of position.

Yes, if two people are riding close together you tend to get the effect of them leap-frogging each other. Impossible to tell who is actually in front.

That's what makes it fun. I calculate the time differences in the updates, compare speeds and try to work out who is actually where.

I can see a late night coming up and an early morning - it is truly addictive. 🙂

So long as two riders aren't very close, say less than ten minutes riding time, then I find it's easiest to open the full history of the leading rider and find the SPOT point closest to where the other rider is and work it out from there. Not completely accurate due to the different reporting times of each riders' device and the difference in location of each SPOT point but it gives a rough indication of the gap. Doesn't work if the lead rider's had a nap in the intervening period either 😳

This is epic stuff. I got a picture from nikk this morning of a cloud inversion above Fionn Loch. Meanwhile nikk had the thousand yard stare of a multiday racer.

In the first 4 there's 2 who rode through the night and 2 who rested for a while.

First and second is rested versus unrested, and the same with 3rd and 4th.

Will that freshness make the difference?

I've thought much the same, it will be a great endorsement for the bike. But then I'd need to find a way to acquire the last decade or so of focus and determination and training effort that Lee has done... 🙂

I'm knackered after sitting here watching the dots until 2 am, an hour's snooze in the chair thinking I was watching the dots, then a disturbed sleep also watching the dots (much more exciting, the dots were talking about the conditions), then waking up to follow the dots again.

So how do the riders feel? It won't be ordinary tired, that's for sure. It's just unimaginable.

Go Lee!

Edit: her dot hasn't moved in 43 mins. Problem? Hopefully just the tracker.

What was the deal with Lee taking the wrong route, was it resolved or to be resolved after the race?

Um, I hope I didn't sound like I was saying either a) Lee's, and all the others' achievements, are due to anything other than frankly incomprehensible levels of effort and will or b) that just buying a new bike would ever elevate me to anything like their league …

Just got caught up in the dot- watching while thinking about new bikes ...

Has there been a joint first place finish yet in the HT550? Will PA and LG join hands across the finish line and then share a bag of chips?

"What was the deal with Lee taking the wrong route, was it resolved or to be resolved after the race?"

I sure as hell wouldn't - death or glory.

Just watched the replay, did LG set off 2 hours behind the others?

If so who 'wins' first across the line, or shortest time? It's an ITT, not a 'race', but it is a mass start?

Liam is a blue dot (group start) rather than a yellow dot (ITT) so his start time should be taken as when Howard said Go!

As Tom said - blue dot = group start time. If you were late, you were late, so be it.

I'm rooting for him because he represents everyone who likes a lie in. Setting off a leisurely 2 hours after everyone else and rather than push on and do an overnighter he had a kip.

If he was racing Le Mans he'd be one of the old school who got out and put on dinner jacket and black tie for the evening laps.

We need to make this compulsory for the 24 hour races.

Keep the riff raff out.

Oh oh, I don't have a DJ, scratch that idea. 🙂

Edit: no refresh from Lee for 44 mins. Hopefully it's the tracker.

Less than 3 miles to go for 3rd place.

Shame the trackers don't fire up more often near the finish, it's hard to work out the positions this close.

Be happy it's not Aidan, he'd probably do his traditional SPOT death ride. Aka, ride longer than the 24hour reset and don't reset before the end.
