ive got a 46 tooth sunrace cassette and a goat link xt medium cage rear mech. Does anyone know if this should work ? The gear shifting seems all over the place at the moment. My only other option is a long cage xt mech which the goat link won't fit! I wish I'd never started this job now as I'm meant to be riding the bike in the morning!

Should be a relatively easy check to see if it should have the mechanical reach to work or not.

If it does, then your set-up needs tweaking - bent hanger, old tight cables, knackered rear mech/ shifter / chain etc.

I use a 10-46 10sp Sunrace with SLX medium cage and no fancy link things.

It should work but ime it is shit with clunky heavy shifting. (I ran this set up till last week when I smashed it off a rock cutting a line tight)

Fitted An 11 speed long cage xt mech works perfectly(even on the 10 speed system) and gives nice light shifting even with clutch on. And I didn't change cable inner or outer.

How do I check if it had the mechanical reach ? New cables, new chain, new cassette, cant see that the rear hanger is bent as it's part of the drop out it looks pretty solid and straight

Pretty sure the goatlink description says it only works officially up to 42T, but it seems to work fine with plenty of 46T. I used a 40T Sunrace with Slx non clutch mid cage mech but had to use a goatlink on the 46T version.  You will have to play around with the B screw adjustment to get the mech cage clearance on the 46T ring. Sunrace provide a longer screw but not always required.

I'm running the same cassette with a pilo (goat) link, on a zee mech with one up cage, shifting is ok but way too heavy with the clutch on so leave it off. Is your chain the right length.

My experience too Jim plops.

The 11 speed works perfectly even with clutch on . It's a revelation .without spending big bucks on a full 11speed set up

For a long time on my hardtail I've been running the 11spd version with a 10spd slx mech (rad-caged modded), obviously with a 11spd slx shifter with no problems. I can't see any reasons why yours shouldn't work.
As others have said, check the hanger, cables etc.

Slight thread hijack, I've bought a new frame and am looking at putting a 1x11 groupset on it with a 32t front and 46t rear, can you use a medium cage or would it have to be a long cage.

Cheers

That's a 35 tooth difference so it depends on the mech. For Shimano probably long cage, for SRAM medium should be ok.

You can get ripoff goatlinks on ebay for £2. They work excellently.
