Going on a road ride with my mate on Saturday and don't have my road bike to hand. I do however have my cx bike and a set of 23mm Gp4000s
I'm a bit dubious about this combo . 23mm tyres on 20 mm internal diameter rims. And are cl 25s meant to be run at 100 psi?
Any confirmation I won't die would be welcome.. It'll be a one off but I don't fancy my tyre falling off regardless
As well as exceeding the rim's suggested maximum tyre pressure with potentially catastrophic consequences, there's a risk of 'railing' on the rim as you go around a corner. A decent CX tyre will only be 1-2mph slower that a road tyre anyway.
Hmm that doesn't sound so good! Are cl25 not meant for high pressure then regardless of tyre width. I wasn't sure if they were a road, cx or xc rim tbh
Current tyres are gravel King sks..they are definitely significantly slower than a proper road tyre. 2mph is quite alot slower!
You'll be fine. I did thousands of miles on my CL25's with 25mm road tyres at high pressures. I had some dealings with the Pacenti importer (very helpful) about a damaged one, not the set set as above, and when I mentioned maximum pressure he said that it was irrelevant or words to that effect. It might be a worry for the tyres manufactures but not for rim makers was his reply.
Now, other rims suppliers may differ or play cautious, but this is a rim now sold as a gravel CX rim and not some fat bike thing designed for 2psi.
Thanks matt. What kind of pressures were you running in the cl25?
Been running 25mm tyres on CL25s at 80-85psi with no issues for the last 2 years. I doubt a mm off each side will make much difference!
Up to 100
I was running 23c tyres on a 21 internal rim (just changed to 25c) and no problems at all over last 6 months. The rims are also Mavic XC421 so not designed for high pressure.
Survived . Worked quite well actually. Thanks for the reassurance everyone l!
I reckon you oughta try going tubeless on that combo on the next ride 🙂
I think I'll give tubeless a miss!
The one thing that today's ride taught me was that whilst a cheap mtb vs the latest carbon wonder bike are miles apart in terms of ride quality, the same can't really be said for road bikes.
My good roadie is a canyon ultimate, pimped out with carbon aero wheels and weighing in at around 7kg. Today's bike was a caadx tiagra with a set of wheels built up form planet x's bargain bucket and mismatched road tyres. And you know what, it didn't feel any less capable, fun to ride or particularly slower. And it cost me the grand sum of 350 quid on bike to work.
Not that I'll be sell the canyon but it makes you think .
The frame materials, groups etc,. are not really going to make that much difference when riding along a tarmac road. From experience the tyres make the biggest difference and as you are using good light and supple tyres I am not surprised it felt good. Put some Marathon+ on your Canyon and you will see what I mean...
TBH the basic road bike once you get away from the BSO stuff is very very good, they’ve pretty much nailed the shifting. There may be a slight weight penalty and a skimping on the tyres but the reality is there’s not that much in this stuff, it’s the engine that counts.
A nicely pimped bike can motivate you thou but as they say it “ain’t the bike holding you back” 🙂
