I have a Shimano HG-74 chain (10 speed). If it breaks or I need to break it how should I go about returning it to endless glory?

YBN quick link - fits all 10spd and is reuseable.

quick/power/speed link will be better for trailside fix than shimano pins.

That KMC quick link, rrps, eh?
9Spd 4.99, bit pricey but ok
8spd 3.99, hmm, old tech selling off cheap?
10spd 9.99, WTF? is this a flash tax or are slightly narrower quick links twice as expensive to produce?

Shimano pins - good, but nor reuseable
SRAM powerlink - good, but 10 SPD not reusable (???)
KMC/YBN quick links - good, can be found cheaper, and reuseable.

My pack always has a couple of 9 and 10 spd links in it.(I always keep one back for me!!)

Assuming that a 10-speed MTB chain and a 10-speed road chain are identical, then a 9-speed RAM Powerlink will work just fine with it - and it is re-useable.

Wippermann Connex 10sp Chain Link £6.99.
Easiest to use + reusable. Used them on road, MTB and DH - 10sp Shimano + Campag chains with no problems.

9s works well enough and is cheep and re-useable.

Related tip, electrical tape some spare links to the insides of your brake levers, that way you've always got the right links on the right bike. The same tip works with tapeing some spare brake pads and innertubes to the seatpost. Means I can pack my jersey pocets or camelpack without having to worry about having the correct brake pads and chain links, innertubes etc for that particular bike.

+1 for the Wipperman, far better than anything else.

Thanks all.

Excuse my ignorance, but am I right in thinking these are all get-you-home fixes, and a new chain is then needed? (And therefore new chainset and cassette, if they're not near-new already?)

Nope. These are all standard methods of joining a new or old chain.

Hunta - that is the best bit. They are just another normal link that you can undo to remove the chain, then reconnect. I have one chain with 3 quick links in it!!
