Off to Gran Canaria next month. Who to hire from? Is it wise to solo or to join a group? Have done quite a bit of road in Tenerife, need to try something different for my 50th.

Freemotion are good

They hire a bikes or do a variety of guided tours to suit different abilities

+1 for free-motion.

I was there there last week, popped along early one morning, got a bike sorted, joined a tour and had a jolly good time. That was road not mtb but the off road side of things looked very good as well.

I rode with Free Motion a few years ago - a good set up but personally I was disappointed with the trails.

Did 2 days riding and neither where a patch on routes I've done in the UK (Lakes, Peaks, Hebden, etc).

Think I will solo road, and join Free motion for days mtb. Be a change to ride dusty trails.

I did one of the southern tours with Freemotion a few years ago during the summer. I wasn't very impressed with the trails as they were mostly double tracks.
From speaking to the guide the better trails are only ridden in the winter (too dry and dusty in the summer ) - funnily enough the video below popped up in my FB feed earlier - it looks a lot better than the trails I rode

Use Freemotion. The problem is if you go there in the summer time they only guide the "tourist" tours, but in the winter periode they have some great singletrack tours.
The rental bike are top Cannondales and in really good conditions unlike alot of others rental bikes. The guides can tell a lot about the island and the sceanery is beatiful.

We were there in Jan/Feb time I think. One route we did was not really singletrack but good fun none the less, the other had some fairly technical sections, not a tourist route at all. It's the only ride where I've wanted some uphills to get a rest from the downhill 🙂

Looks like it was this one http://www.free-motion.com/en/mountain-biking-gran-canaria/mountain-bike-touring-gran-canaria/details/tour/chira-trail/?tx_tsfmtouren_pi2%5Btc%5D=600 or very similar

Did a mountain bike tour with them. Well, priced and organised, good bikes and a good ride
