I fancy getting a simple GPS thing. One that goes nicely on the bars. No need for maps, just something that I can upload a route on to it (GPX) and use it to make sure I don't miss the paths and tracks across the moors, through the forests etc...
Of course I can do this with my phone, but I'm not putting that on the bars, and the battery life is measured in minutes with the GPS running.
Any Ideas? Garmin edge seems to be the most obviuos choice.
Edge 200 is basic but perfect if you don't bother with road based stuff. The 500 is a cracking tool but overkill for off-road and the 800 is perfect if you can't read a map.
+1 Garmin Edge
I got mine for < £100 earlier this year - Halfords 10% off and Garmin £20 cashback
The routing is basic but adequate - I used it for a 100k audax ride a couple of weeks ago and did not have to look at my route sheet (other than to check controls)
Garmin Edge 605.
Somebody on here was selling one for a little over £100 new and they are on ebay for a wee bit more.
Colour, Mapping (and they use Free OSM mapping downloadable to memory card).
second hand android smartphone in airplane mode, so GPS only with no netwrok, and no other apps running.
Install mmtracker, acquire memory map data, get a waterproof bar-mount case and a spare battery. I get 6 hours out of my HTC wildfire, 8 hours with the bigger battery.
Whole setup shouldn't cost more than £80.
Sorted.
