My other half is looking for a folding bicycle for a part train, part ride (~5 miles) commute.

Not looking to spend Brompton or Moulton amounts, but any recommendations. It seems the cheaper ones (£200 -£500) are sturdy enough but don't fold that small and don't seem easily wheelable.

Tried a Tern in Evans and also a B-Fold in Decathlon. Any other options worth considering or recommendations? I like the Decathlon Tilt but its heavy.

A second hand brompton can be had for around £400. They are the nicest folder I've ridden but still pretty heavy to carry around.

I ride a Dahon Vitesse HG7.

It's brilliant 😉

Second hand Mezzo folders (designed by Jon Whyte) seem to go for bargain prices. Ride and fold well, use quality parts.

Just in case she is a South West Trains, you can hire a Brompton from them with a bag from as little as £2 a week...

If not then one of the Dahon type bikes - lots of rebadges ones as well eg. £269 for Made.com

as for wheeling, only fold when you have to, wheel as much as you can unfolded.

Many have weight restrictions. Check before you buy!

I had a little spin on the Decathlon Tilt. Real neat design and future design classic in my view! All the shop models had loads of play in the hinge, which looks like it could have been adjusted out. Maybe just badly setup by decathlon monkeys, but killed it for me.

Decathlon Tilt

Looks cute. Belt drive a great idea on a city bike though the hinge is the most important part on a folder so if that's not up to snuff the designs a fail.

You'll want British, of course

I like Dahon, but if I was train commuting it would be a Brompton.

I bought a Brompton on the Cycle to Work scheme - cost me about 60% of the new price. From the research I did, Brompton is best on foldability while being Ok to ride, others like Dahon for best riding

Brompton's look more like £600 upwards finishing price on ebay despite starting around £3-400?

Looks like any weight limits are around or above 100kg, so that's not an issue even with a rucksack.

Its commuting around Manchester, so South West is out, thanks Rootes.

No need to be a Virgin customer, good way of trying a Brompton out if nothing else.. also trams... they don't like people taking folders on... at all... even though Brompton advertised in the tram..

Brompton really are the best all round folder and in particular the luggage etc + spares easy to get especially in places like Manchester.. yes expensive but imho worth it. - try on a C2W scheme..

good Brompton places in Manc, Harry Hall
http://www.harryhallcycles.co.uk/
and Bike Doctor www.bicycledoctor.co.uk/? they both keep demo bikes as well

if a Brompton is relaly too steep to buy, then def a dahon/tern (same thing really) evans got some Terns in the sale:

D8 £350 inc mudgaurds etc nice looking bike

C7 £299

You can also get a front bag for Tern/dahon

Town Evans is on Deansgate - they will get bikes in for you to look at if they do not have in stock.
