I remember binning a lot of those force 40 things in favour of regular yokes...

I know,i know...

but...

its a 1 1/4" fork /can't get a steerer based hanger/ don't want to use headset reducers + use alt fork

just hoping for a bit of experience & know-how from some old back in the day biker

Yes I used one successfully a few years back. I didn't have room under a threaded headset for a proper hanger.

Usual canti set up, get the arms at right-angles etc.
Mine needed different spring tension on each canti arm (spring in different holes on fork leg braze-ons)

They give about 2:1 pull so set blocks close to the rim - or I used dia comp mtb levers with 2 settings - V or canti - to get balanced braking.

I still use the frame but now have a stem drilled to make a hanger.

Hope this makes sense, they do work and solve a problem but can create others.

A back in the day cyclist...

brilliant-just the kind of thing I was looking for:thanks
did you find that blocks close to rim was essential?
I'm trying to use old mtb as cross bike & want max clearance @ the pads ideally

also-I thought that the springs were only responsible for pad retraction after lever released-although the different spring suggestion makes sense intuitively

Can't get a steerer based hanger? Sure? Is it quill or ahead?

As above you gotta take time to set them up. It will work ok.

Oh dear I can't remember that well (very back in the day) but the springs were different tensions. It was trial and error to get them moving evenly.

The pads need to be near the rim if you use levers made for canti/sidepull because the tektro device increases braking force by effectively gearing down the cable pull. So you get about 2* the breaking force but only about 1/2 the pad movement (compared to hanger & straddle wire). If you use a vee brake lever it'll be about right.

My set up used some old dia-comp mtb style levers with 2 locations for the cable nipple to give different amounts of pull: one suitable for vee, the other for canti. So I had the RH lever set for a vee with the tektro thingy, and the LH lever set for canti with a conventional hanger & straddle wire.

When I had drops on it with shimano aero levers it was just very powerful, almost on/off.

It was on an a mid '80s coventry eagle touring frame with 26" wheels. Still in use but I drilled a stem (solid SR alloy quill) instead of using a hanger. This is a better solution but the tektro thingy did work.

Could you get/make a hanger that clamps round and hangs under the stem?
