Moved back to Devon recently, any recommended gpx routes I can ride to from Kingsteignton? I've got a good dartmoor route from Bovey Tracey, know haldon fairly well. Don't know Teign Valley but heard this could be good so any links to routes welcome TIA
Road or MTB?
MTB please, find all that road stuff pretty dodgy with the standard of drivers
Canonteign woods is supposed to be good.
Loads in the woods around steps bridge and up towards castle drogo.
But for natural XC, the cleave is pretty hard to beat.
Thanks Jam Bo, I've been exploring a few of those-I think I was around steps bridge today-Fingle woods also in the same area? Didn't venture as far as castle drogo perhaps another time as it's a bit far from home without using a car...
I really like this route I've done from home and out to Bovey Tracey, but the steps bridge area is new to me https://www.strava.com/activities/3211025100
I used to live in kton.
Loads of good loops - the best by far is riding up to haytor and doing the classic east dartmoor loop from there. Alternatively there is a ride up from steps bridge or up to cannonteign.
Have a look at the OS map around the reservoirs. Plenty of stuff to ride around there.
Bridlepath and byway stuff from Bridford to Steps Bridge.
Couple of bits from Marden Down area.
All sorts of stuff upstream of Steps Bridge.
Basically lots as long as you're prepared to link them up with some rural roads between them.
Strava stalking is your friend here, look in the hills above it using segment explorer and you'll see them, there's 5 lines from one trail head and a few others dotted around, well worth a visit.
If you in K-town do pop into the LBS, they'll be able to help and when not in lockdown and the summer do shop rides around the area.
The unofficial stuff around Steps Bridge and up towards Clifford is out of bounds due to ground nesting birds but has also been attracting quite a bit of attention from the Woodland Trust who aren’t happy. There's a move to try and get access sorted out better and the National Trust which also owns part of the woods is more up for discussion but continued use at present is likely to result in a harder enforced ban.
@hamishthecat - keep us posted with progress on the steps front and if help is needed, shout. There are a good few riders round here that wouldn’t want to see that part of the world shut off to riders.
Lot of strange goings on up there with trees being felled across routes etc. Clearly some ground work needed.
Cheers
Same happened in ausewell woods too I think.
The arb butchery on OMG was apparently done by the Woodland Trust!
Tony Williams at Evolve MTB, who lives in Drewsteignton, is engaging with the National Trust and has asked people to avoid the unofficial stuff for the moment.
No worries. I know Tony so I’ll drop him a line.
Cheers
