I quite fancy getting a check (or is it checked?) LS shirt, but in a technical rather than cotton fabric.

Like the one in the STW shop

https://singletrackmag.com/shop/singletrack-club-ride-go-long-riding-shirt/ (which is out of stock)

Or the Alpkit Woodsmoke ...

https://alpkit.com/products/woodsmoke-mens-thermocore-mountain-shirt

But! £80/£90 seems quite a lot of money, for something that is a bit of a whim/impulse purchase (or Xmas request)

Anything similar, but cheaper?

And, do they work, as a grizzled-lumberjack-MTB-gravel-commute-good-enough-for-the-office-cover-all-bases type piece of clothing?

🤣

I've got two woodsmoke plaid shirts, they are great. They also have press-studs making undoing easy in over heating situations while riding as you can undo and refasten with one hand.
You are right about the price though, I've always bought in the sale when they are < £40

I've also got this Fox one I got from eBay for £20 but not sure they still make them

Woodsmoke

Also look at pearl izumi, they had some on sports pursuit recently for £40is iirc but they had buttons so I didn't go for one

I was going to suggest RD but didn't want to imply anything 😂

Endura Humvee perhaps?

Disturbingly, those photos put me in mind of the showstopping comment by Shaun Lock on Cats Does Countdown when Rachael was showing off her ski mask and helmet. RIP Shaun.

I've got the Overland one - warm, windproof, mysterious pocket placement....love it.

Never worn it on the bike though.

Waiting for the STW ones to come back in stock

I'm also a fan of the lumberjack riding a bike look.😂

Got shirts from Sombrio, Alpkir and TroyLee.
The TLD is by far the best for actually riding in as it's pretty windproof and shrugs off light rain.

I bet Rocketdog never thought when he took those pictures that someone would be looking at them and saying.

"That’s a challenging w**k" 😀

Love me a shirt for riding in. Beard also mandatory, see @rocketdog also!

Highly recommend Club Ride for customer service. Had a Shaka flannel from them that fell out of my handlebar bag and got tangled in the front wheel. Sleeve went in the disc and shredded it to pieces. Sent them an email and received a 40% discount code the next day.

Banana Industries, Volk and LL Bean's Katahdin worth a look too.

Banana Industries sizing is way off in my experience but kept it as it's a really nice shirt and an incentive to lose weight.

Have a cotton LL Bean from a vintage store that is one of my favourite shirts, super high quality but not 'tech'. Katahdin is wool/poly blend IIRC.

Just trying to decide one which Volk to pull the trigger on, Stagediver at the top of the lost so far. Viscose/poly blend should be super breathable.

HTH

I've had some cheap summery ones from Tog24 (very good) and Regatta (Ok, but not as good with iffy seams which rub).

I am thinking I might try a warmer Tog24 one.

I have 2 of the Overland ones - both short and long sleeve. It’s a really nice fabric, bit of stretch so a nice, non-flappy fit on the bike plus loads of pockets. Looks good off the bike too.

I have worn mine on the bike, and it performs as well as it looks. It is challengingly slim fitting though, extra pies make the last button a close call sometimes. Never used the mystery pocket though.

Sombrio

I’ve got one of the yellow/black checks but tbh i’ve never wore it on the bike, just used it as a nice tech shirt for wandering around.

Bought in a sale for the win, I do like the sombrio stuff.

out of stock)

Or the Alpkit Woodsmoke …

Woodsmoke [Mens]

But! £80/£90 seems quite a lot of money

Yeesh, 2-3 years ago the Woodsmokes were £55 - and that was before they went on sale! I've had 3, great shirts but not worth £90, mostly because they fall apart after a year or two

A couple of Pearl Izumi Rove options on Sport Pursuit. Flannel, but not checked mind… I’ve got one of the older checked ones - nice shirt.

@rocketdog - they’re not buttons, so give them a go!

As well as the Woodsmoke Alpkit also do the Kanza. Lighter material and slimmer fit but still OK for off bike mooching. Bought both of then in the sale, wouldn't buy one for 90 quid.

Cheers for whoever pointed out DHB do a green one. My tech flannels see most use as work shirts so fancy another. 👍

Alpkit is like Planet-x, just wait a few weeks and they'll have a sale....

I've got three of the Woodsmoke shirts. I really like them. In fact I'm wearing one right now, they rarely get worn on the bike. I often use them as a midlayer

A cheaper alternative is to look for workwear check shirts - scruffs, dickies etc

I’ve got a Cascada one on my letter to Santa for this year. Not tried them yet but get good reviews.

Just a 2penn’orth. I have one of the older sombrio shirts that seem to have the design ‘emulated’ by the other manufacturers/brands. I don’t like the heavy press studs. Detracts for me from what would otherwise be a nice enough shirt. Not very stealth sales pitch but if anyone wants to buy a medium then say.
I also have a dakine Oakridge polygiene shirt that feels warmer and has buttons, which I prefer. I’d recommend those if you can find one, along with a Rab polyester shirt, NOT the boundary cotton shirt. That’s disappointing.
Said Rab shirt, in a @Rocketdog style picamature

My favourite riding shirt though is a surplus wool blend CPO shirt. Deals with weather, tough, warm, comfy.

I have a few different shirts but find if I buy it to fit my body then the arms and back are too short and I buy it to fit arms & long enough to cover my back then the front just bellows around.

Looks like the Woodsmoke might have quite a long back but all the action shots are with sleeves rolled up which makes me suspicious.

I've got the Sombrio one and like it well enough, it gets a few outings a year in spring and autumn.

I actually stopped riding to take this selfie, sorry...

Sainsbury's do decent checked shirts with various degrees of padding for £20.

I've got 3 over the years... can't see the point paying more.

Another vote for the woodsmoke here, cracking piece of kit and actually works. If you sign up you also get a discount iirc.

I have a couple of Dakine ones and a Orvis (fly fishing brand apparently) one.

They are great for hiking but i find them too hot for riding unless it's really baltic.  But i run hot.

I think you can just get iron on labels with more or less anything on.

You can even get a label says they are dolphin friendly unlike many of these posh brands

Shedbrewed, you are a style icon.

Not very stealth sales pitch but if anyone wants to buy a medium then say.

Is the med like a Rab/Montane fit, suitable for 6ft / 75kg? Interested if so.

@jameso I have my moments of mediocrity that rise above the general dross. I’ll measure it up pit to pit etc but I suspect it’ll be too large. Think mtb rider medium rather than roadie medium. I’m a medium in the brands you mentioned but think the Sombrio comes up big.

I'm rather fond of my Alpkit one. Though I appear to have gained weight so its a bit more mamil than rugged outdoorsman right now 🙁

Will have a look at the other links as def a fan.

i have quite a few of these for everyday wear. Never worn one on a bike mind you ! The Alpkit Woodsmoke ones are nice, soft, comfy, stretchy. They don't seem to last that well though; one of mine went in the bin after a year or so, have 2 others still going strong. Also have a couple of Frahm ones - very spendy and very nice, more sturdy and warmer than the Alpkits. Also have 2 Endura shaket ones, which are much more jacket than shirt and great for nippy morning spring and summer dog walks !

Morvelo Overland is amazing, warm and windproof. I use it in the winter with merino base layer. Also has deep pockets on the back for phone, keys, gloves, snacks...

This is one of my fave shirts, but despite being Fox, I don't think there's anything remotely technical about it
