I'm thinking of getting a shirt - to show support more than for wearing on the bike.

Question is - is it too popular with the wrong sort of cyclist for me to associate myself with it?

For guidance: I am a super cool middle aged cyclist 😆

You want to show support for Rupert Murdoch and his right wing conservative agenda? Can't you just get a t-shirt with a picture of Dave and Gideon standing with the rest of the Bullingdon Club?

Show support for your waistline or for Murdoch?

I like a lot of the riders on Sky, but the outfit as a whole is a bit cynical for me to feel a desire to show my 'support'. ymmv.

I'd rather support:

I'm thinking of getting a shirt - to show support more than for wearing on the bike.

Who do you want to show your support to? Do you just want people to say 'look at him, he supports Team Sky Pro Cycling or is it for wearing at races?

Its nice looking kit, wouldn't wear it myself, but you do what you want.

That Facebook link exactly describes the group of cyclists I DON't want to be associated with.

Hence not wearing the Sky shirt when out on my bikes.

This question has only arisen because I've recently been offered 25% discount at Rapha 🙄

Which - the people who run the page, or the people depicted?

If he had a beard he wouldn't be asking STW/wife/gf what he should be wearing 😉

I see no difference between a team Sky top and a England rugby top. If you like the top and team, go for it. Haters going to hate.

or is it questioning the mentality of adults who still want to dress like their "heroes" - cycling club jerseys, acceptable, if your in the club

team kit, don't get it, maybe someone (above the age of 13) who likes wearing team kit and enjoys it wants to explain?

Get fake sky kit if you intend to get some.
Not only will you look daft but Murdoch will not have profited.
Some Chinese drugs baron on eBay will be happy for your purchase from them.

I got the merino club jersey the team sky version, has a little team sky logo on the back, team sky colours but understated so only the trained eye will spot it.

I think the FB page originally started as a bit of light hearted fun at the expense of the "all the gear no idea" types and people who dress in full TDF garms to pop to the shops etc, which if we're honest we all find amusing.... but as per most things on the internet, it has gotten a bit snarky and personal.

Team Sky kit is the cycling version of the Man Utd football kit.

On little kids it shows ambition - on anybody above 16 yrs old its just sad and wrong.

I have my Adidas Sky kit. I bought it to show my support at the 2012 Tdf. Sir Dave signed it, and I met the team who signed the boys's jerseys too.

I have more issues with Rapha-wearing wannabes to be honest!

And no I don't have a Sky subscription, dreadful.

There is definitely a breed of pro-kit wearer who deserve ridicule - the attention seeker who wants people to think 'oh, is that Bradley' etc.

There's one in particular I see sometimes on my daily ride in to work: full Sky winter kit, Pinarello, Garmin that bleeps every time he stops at the lights (which he doesn't do very often). He's in good shape, and not slow, although I can keep up with him on an MTB no probs...he never says 'hi', he just blanks me out, which a genuine pro would never do 🙂

I live in Manchester, and remember about 6 years back, if you saw someone riding Sky kit/GB bike, it was always a genuine rider like Geraint Thomas - now, I'd have to say, it's usually a t****r.

People who wear football/rugby tops aren't attention seekers and they're not trying to make people look round and go 'ooh, that's not such and such is it ?'

Nothing wrong with Rapha clothing - I'm sure they do nice plain, understated clothing without the need to have a team sponsor written on it....

I went out round a loop on my local bridleways one Sunday morning a couple of months ago. I am a middle aged fat lad on an MTB and don't go uphill fast. My route took me onto and up a quiet side road in one of the local woods and as I span slowly uphill I was caught and passed by a road bike. I bid him a cheery good day and was duly blanked, which is unusual as the roadies round here are by and large a friendly bunch. The rider was about my age and though shorter was proportionately no slimmer. He was dressed in the complete Team Sky replica kit including helmet, overshoes (although the sun was particularly warm for the hour and month) and was riding a Pinarello frame. He had clearly worked hard to pass me and I was able to hold his wheel for a period.

After a couple of hundred meters the slope eased and he glanced behind him. Nothing daunted I said, "nice day". His response was to turn to the front, rise somewhat unsteadily to his feet and, with a slightly strangled cry of "Wgns attacks again", try and accelerate away. I kept on his wheel for long enough to utter a somewhat surprised, "Excuse me, what was that?" to which I got no response other than that he sank back to the saddle. As my exit had arrived I let him enjoy his victory and pedaled off into the woods hoping he didn't hear me laughing like a hyena.

I don't think he did as he certainly didn't comment when he came past me sitting at the side of the road having a drink about ten minutes later. The road is a loop and the bridleway a cut through.

I'm a nob and I regularly keep up with the Roadies in full Lycra whilst riding to & from my local riding spot, how this is possible I have no idea ? I've been told Lycra is better because it doesent flap about in the wind like my baggy top and baggy shorts thus making the rider more comfy and streamlined.

Where as I am relying on a good pair lungs and a strong pair of legs to see me through maybe I should just shell out for a Team top then I will be as fast as old Bradders.

It doesent help that a Team Sky rider lives in the same village as me, it's like having a Spice Girl living round the corner.
Some people have No shame.

Although I doubt they were all that bothered that some fat bluffer on a MTB with a point to prove, hung on the back of their group for a couple of miles....

It's all about perspective. If you think your a God, and they're all jealous of you, then good for you fella...

I wasnt hanging on the back, once id passed them i actually got to the front, it was the Fat MAMIL'S that were hanging on at the back,

As you say it is all about perspective, if you leave the house in Full on Lycra you wouldnt want a Fat Bluffer on a MTB passing you would you ?
Or maybe you would, or maybe you even have ? i dont think i'm a God but i can ride a bike, as for being jealous i'm not sure they were and i certainly am not jealous of wearing Lycra and riding a road bike.

Ive been there and done that. Its boring. and the worst part is that to be accepted you all think its right that Lycra is cool.

obviously having engaged them in conversation you were aware they were at the end of a century, or doing a zone 1 recovery ride, or on their first ride back from a serious injury, or just enjoying a pootle and fresh air?

I caught and passed a roadie on a carbon/titanium wonderbike whilst on my 36lb super-tacky equipped Alpine 160. My thoughts were "ooh nice bike".

Yes, but there's a difference between

i) Wearing a football/rugby shirt to the pub

ii) Turning up to a kickaround in the park with your mates wearing full manchester united team kit with matching jersey, shorts, socks, shin pads and boots, a team kit bag, MUFC water bottles and signed football 😀

The only team jersey it is acceptable to wear is old long gone teams like Z, TVM or Wonder that serve to scream to one and all that 'I was into cycling before it got cool'

saturday i witnessed a guy with a sky top, riding an oldish spesh epic with skinny slick tyres. Clearly he hadnt ridden a bike since it was new. Maybe the new sky top was a present that forced him to try riding again. From the look of him the spesh will be back in the garage for the next ten years.

On my way home i sometimes pass a roadie going up the hill in king of the mountains top - i always think "hardly king of the mountains given the struggle up there, are you?"

but then im a tosser.

As you say it is all about perspective, if you leave the house in Full on Lycra you wouldnt want a Fat Bluffer on a MTB passing you would you ?

Depends if I'd still got 80 miles to go, I'm not going to waste time "Racing" some stranger with an obvious case of wee man syndrome... If it's a short ride and my ego's in charge maybe I'll play...

and the worst part is that to be accepted you all think its right that Lycra is cool.

Nobody thinks Lycra is "Cool" let's be honest, whatever the particular sub-niche you're still a grown man/woman riding a bicycle, only other cyclists might think you look cool, the majority of society will take the piss whatever you wear... Lycra is simply appropriate Road/CX/XC cycling attire, just like most people don't play tennis in rigger's boots, you wear the clothing that best suits what you are doing, if I'm on my MTB I'll wear flappy non aero clothing that suits what I'm doing...

Its generally considered a wee bit sad within some of the cliques to wear certain team replica kits, but I wouldn't be rude to someone IRL just because they wore a sky top, it's just clothing, everyone on a bike gets a nod and a smile from me...

As for your stunning sporting achievement, have you told anyone else? you know off the interwebz, I'm sure they'll all be impressed,

Women must beg to bear your children all the time, do young boys reverently tug at your sleeve and ask for you autograph?
I bet you don't have to buy your own drinks at the boozer do you?

Are you sponsored yet?

No what am I saying, you're obviously far too modest for all that nonsense...

But in a similar vein I overtook a Porche the other day in my crappy old estate car, The driver might have simply been Cruising along without feeling the need to race, but I'm choosing to believe He's a great big fanny and I'm the lord of Awesome, So I'll be punting my CV off to McLaren later today...

My nob confession was in response to Sancho's nob & tossers post for MTB's keeping up with roadies, its funny how when you wear Lycra you suddenly become elitist, and when you cant ride everyone else becomes a nob & a tosser.

And as for being in a Zone 1 recovery phase of a ride, it is true then that ALL Lycra wearing wanabeees are infact Pro athletes at the Peak of Physical fitness. Recovering from Injury or just finished a grand tour.

Its pathetic, but keep pretending its real.

I'm off to dig out my Team GB medals for posterity.

On the Mtb rider passing the roadie on a climb theme:

Whilst I believe most stories on here are just that, stories/fantasies.
I recently found out that lots of the local climbs that roadies pay lots of attention to on Strava, have been getting demolished by a guy on a Mtb ...

He does not wear Sky kit either.
