really damp squib

No, I'm loving it. Full view of the riders, mano a mano. Two races in one - stage win up the front and GC behind. This is epic.

seems theres enough round for barriers and supporters

Crowd control, logistics etc would be unworkable.

it's 2-1 to Pog on points with Jonas still leading on time. (though its interesting that the attack came from the Pog after jumbo going through the motions of setting it up for Jonas)

lead @ the top of the standing down to 17 !

Yep, Jumbo-Visma might need the rest day to have another look at their tactics cos at this rate Pogacar will be taking a dozen seconds on every climb...

Chapeau to Mr Woods 🙂 though I don't think that performance from the yellow jersey and his team will endure him to the french public :/

Much as I want Pog to win that climb suited him, punchy, not very long. The surprising bit for me is that when Kuss was on the front giving it the beans both Yates and Pidcock and Rodriguez were still with them, not sure Jumbo were doing anything other than trying to discourage attacks

Weird stage. Very weird. Pretty disappointing from most angles. I mean obviously not from Woods but I can’t imagine 99% of spectators didn’t want Jorgensen to get there and the GC didn’t really come alive. Best rider today for me was Simon Yates.

But I’m probably just grumpy cos Cav - I couldn’t even bring myself to watch the highlights last night. I’ve been a Cav fan since day 1 and I’m upset

Edit - I know that sounds stupid but I was so depressed last night

The geology stuff that ITV4 put in is genuinely fascinating - brilliant to see such a wide-ranging coverage rather than just talking constantly about cycling.

Same here, I was devastated for him. The pics of him in the back of a car. 😭

Just to add - tomorrow is a rest day so no thread (at least, not from me - @Klunk might be up for posting a round up?) - but there's the other more general threads for posting pics, galleries, highlight videos etc and the TdF website https://www.letour.fr/en will be doing a comprehensive week 1 round up.

Daily thread again on Tuesday for Stage 10.

There will also be a Week 1 highlights package on ITV4 and Eurosport. ITV4 programme is at 7pm on Monday, not sure on Eurosport timings.

Was just reading that apparently Vinikourov is keen to get him to stay on for next year and try to finish his career the right way. Will be interesting to see if he’s up for it. Could be quite a show if they keep Renshaw on for the year and really get the team well drilled for the sprints as they were still figuring it out this Tour.

I'm really torn on the contract thing.

Would absolutely love to see him get the outright wins,  but part of me thinks it hat seems right to be equal now.

Really interesting discussion on yesterday's never strays far as they had marcel kittel as well

I think Cav looked good enough this year that he should consider staying on for 2024.  Also, being equal is unsatisfactory given that after a series of masterclasses in delivering their sprint man to where he needed to be in 2021 his Belgian team mysteriously failed to turn up in Paris when he was poised to take the record from Merckx.

if we zoom out a bit though, make of it what you will, but maybe a bit too much is been hung on what happened on the Granon stage last year

(info from @djsmokingban on Twitter)

Since TDF 2021, Pogačar has gained the following time (climbing) on Vingegaard:

TDF '21:

3:20 stage 8

32s stage 9

2s stage 17

3s stage 18

TA '22

2s stage 4

1:03 stage 6

PN '23

43s stage 4

6s stage 7

33s stage 8

TDF '23

24s stage 6

8s stage 9

Since TDF 2021, Vingegaard has gained the following time (climbing) on Pogačar:

TDF '22

2:51 stage 11

1:04 stage 18

TDF '23

1:04 stage 5

"his Belgian team mysteriously failed to turn up in Paris when he was poised to take the record from Merckx."

He he, but in reality no, because Morkov was there and clear but Cav wasn't on his wheel, I think he dropped off on purpose to surf wheels and try and outsmart his rivals but got boxed. I'm not sure if I want to see Cav do one more year I think we all need to give in to the idea of Cav not  being around even if I don't like it.

I agree that I can't see Puy de Dome being used much because it's too much like a timetrial and there are better climbs, a lack of crowds is not something the tour organisers are keen on and I get the feeling the riders were pretty underwhelmed
