Hi all,
I am wondering whether anyone might have modified their On One Scandal frame by tapping threads in the dropouts.
I would like to be able to fit a rack to it for childseat and trailer towing. Seems like there is enough space in the dropout to do it but could be a horrible idea.
I have already slid down some rocks on the bike so battered the paintwork so resale value is not too much of an issue for me.
I would handle the upper ones using a seatclamp I have with threads on.
I saw a scandal for Sale on Facebook a few months ago with this done but they didn't make mention of it. There's definitely enough space there to do it, I'm just not sure it's designed for it. Planet x sell steel versions with rack mounts.
I think if your doing it for bike packing, you could get away with it but I wouldn't risk it I for something like the badger divide where of it fails your left in the middle of no where. I also wouldn't trust it for a child seat.
I'm currently using a Robert axle project axle and old man mountain rack, mounted to the axle and a seat post clamp. Works really well but the rack is on the heavy side.
If you do tap the frame, please come back and post some pictures. Good luck
If the drop outs are simply big chunks of alloy, then there’s no reason why not - drop out threads are usually M5 x 0.8, so 4.2mm diameter hole
Not into the drop-outs, but into the seat stays, once at the top and 2 holes lower down along the seat stays, and even that held up...

I even drilled holes into the top tube for poor men's internal cable routing, and shortly after Brant was sitting at the table next to mine in a pub, and he said: holes in the TOP tube, that's fine...

Op, which version of the scandal? V1, v2 or v3 (the current one on sale?)
Are p-clips an option?
This would be into a V3 (current Scandal). Seems like some mixed opinions on whether this is a reasonable idea or not. I tend to think as someone said that it is quite a big chunk of aluminium. I also don't think the resale of the frame is meaningful espcially as I am currently living in New Zealand where I suspect On One brand appeal is niche.
P clips are less of an intervention but actually feel like a bigger frame damage risk to me with 18Kg child on top.
The Robert Axle is a nice solution but rather spendy and not that easy to get hold of I suspect.
Hmmm....
Tubus do fixing kits for bikes without mounts. Axle mounts induced. If there is a decent amount of flat metal at the dropouts I would have no issue drilling and tapping tho
