I've got a headset removed tool but it can't get any purchase on the lower cup of a tapered headset
Is there a special tool for this?
Thanks
is it a carbon on-one 456?
clamping the cup in a vice and twisting the frame worked for me...
Nope - it's a yeti
May try rhe vice method , although it sounds pretty brutal!
it is, difficult not to damage the cups if you're trying to reuse them.
issue with c456 was the machining for the cup was exactly the same depth as the cup insert. There was no 'lip' to get any purchase on with a tool/screwdriver.
If you can feel or see a lip and a gap inside the headtube between the headset cup and the headtube itself then you should be able to get something in there to bash it out. If it's flush then your stuck.
That occurred to me as soon as I'd pressed in my headset, hope I never have to remove it 🙁issue with c456 was the machining for the cup was exactly the same depth as the cup insert.
Wwaswas - exactly that . There's a slight gap (1 or 2 mm) so normal tool just slips
It's a chris king headset so keen not to butcher it!
If the gap is very small could you not try and get a start on it from a screwdriver, You will probably be able to get a better angle on a screwdriver solong as the hop cup is removed than a headset cup removal tool. Then if it moves a couple of mm you could possibly get your headset tool on it for the last few hits.
I would normally try as follows (thinking like a compass), pick a point say the left hand side (West) tap, move 45deg clock wise (NW) tap, move 180 deg (SE) tap, move 45deg clockwise (S) tap, move 180 (N) tap, 45 deg clockwise (NE) tap, move 180 deg (SW) tap, 45 deg (W) tap, 180 deg (E) 45 (SE).
You may end up with 8 small notches on the insertion lip of the headset but these could be filed out once removed. by the sounds of it you just need it to move a few mm so no need to really batter the screwdriver that could possibly damage the headset.
