[Closed] Tape for 40mm rim, does it need to be the full width?

Thinking of converting to tubeless on a +bike with SunRingle Düroc 40 SL rims.

Given the faff experienced previously trying to tape a 29mm rim I’m not looking forward to repeating the process with 40mm wide tape.

Is it absolutely necessary to cover the full, internal width, or would a decent width, like gorilla tape, seal off the spoke holes?

Even as typing this I’m thinking it might also be required to be full width due to the rim joints..........

I'd be using 45mm tape for those.

I use 25mm tape, once up the left, once up the right and then one through the middle... BUT I do use our tape which is half the thickness of stans etc. so you can get away with multiple wraps.

I just used normal tap and made sure the spoke holes were covered. The rim tape is narrower than the internal width on all 4 of our bikes.

I've used narrower tape on rims before thinking covering spoke holes may be enough. Didn't go well.

Rim joint is one problem, but depending on the depth of the well it might cause the tape to lift at the sides if not adequately covering to the rim sides. Air gets under the tape then and can come out the valve hole. Also, seating the tyre I found the bead (and likewise tyre levers) would push the tape edge around and similar result.

wide stuff, or three wraps as per bird. thickness shouldn't be an issue, the rim is wide enough that you've still only got one layer on the bead shelf

I've tried the centre layer only. Mostly doesn't work. Exception is on Hugo rims, where there's a separate well for each bead and the centre section with the spoke holes is raised and the tape is safe from tyre bead molestation.

DT do a 42mm tape for 40mm rims, usually only needs one layer too.

I did a Hope 35mm recently and the wide tesa tape (33mm) was difficult to get really tight, as it's just less flexible, and I got bubbles underneath and it didn't seal that well.

Ended up taking it off and running some 25mm tape (gorilla) just over the spoke holes, which was easier to 'lay' and did the job.

See how you go, is the best advice I can give.

I found some 39mm tape for my Hope 35W's on eBay from a guy from Poland, fitted perfectly. Tried the triple wrap before with some 25mm tape and it lifted after a few days, typically it did it mid-ride too. Not great when the sealant is slowly bubbling out of every spoke hole as you look on swearing 😠

45mm rim with 23mm tape covering the spoke holes. No problems over 12 months since I did it.Just make sure it is well stuck down on the edges.
