Any tandem riders on here?
OK here goes. I'm considering getting a childback tandem frame, and want to cannibalize my current touring bike (converted MTB) for parts. This opens up a world of pain as regards chainset options, compatibility, etc.
So I'll try to keep this very simple...
I am running 8spd XT shifters and mechs, on LX hubs, and a Spa Cycles XD2 chainset. with 170mm cranks. What is the minimum I need to buy to fit this to a tandem and make it all work?
Give me a shopping list, people 🙂
Thanks in advance
OK, I'll give it a bash
Stoker stem and bars
seat post and saddle
Eccentric BB
Tandem cables brake and gear
How are you doing the timing chain?
you need either 2 left hand cranks which take rings unless you are running the timing chains on the drive side
right hand crank for rear (without rings?)
2 extra chains for timing chain
extra set of pedals
probably missed of loads, but there is a start.
Is your front mech the right size for the frame?
is your existing seat post the right size and is it strong enough for a stoker stem to attach to it?
Tandems typically have fairly heavy duty wheels and a third brake, but these may be unnecessary for a kiddiback.
Thanks. It's the drivetrain options/solutions I'm hazy on. Very hazy.
I think I'm at one end of a long learning journey!
Are you on facebook? there's a tandem club group where there's recently been a dsicussion about setting up a singleseided drive train. It's possible and some tandems are sold like that, but you do have to consider things like chains catching
