Specifically this one... but generally.

We're debating jumping on a try of a 29 race for the boy.

Geometry shows it slightly slacker and longer than his GT Fury...

I'm not seeing much of a downside and worst case scenario, if he doesn't like it, i'll buy it off him and ride it lol.

how tall is he? 29ers on big travel bikes for short people have clearance issues.

Seen that for sale for a while.I would have probably bought it for max 3k if it was an s4 size.
Worst colour though in my eyes and would prefer the 2021 mullet.
Pearce cycles do the swing arm kit to mullet it properly for £400 or so I recall?
I would of just whacked a 27.5 wheel in though and tried it out.

Edit oh it has the mullet kit included. Nice deal.

Those cranks have a lot of heel rub for ‘it’s only had a couple of bike park trips of use out of it’

5'7-5'8 at the moment.

Indeed it does and i'm pretty sure we have a wheel that'll fit to try as a mullet setup.

Is it the same one that's been on Pinkbike since May. You would have thought he would have cleaned it before he took the photos

The one on PB seems to be the same model but different bike...

I don't mind washing it 🙂

as a 29er, imo he will be a bit limited by it until he grows a bit more. I occasionally get rear wheel-to-arse rub on my dh bike and I'm 6'2 riding a 26er..

That's OK, worst case, i'm racing it at 417 on the 25th Sept 😀 He can grow into it after that lol.

The deal isn't signed yet... but it's certainly a consideration unless i get a horror story in the next day.

Looks the same bike to me from the photos and the address. Its always worth a drive to sit on it and check it over. I thought he was happy with the GT

I thought he was happy with the GT

He loves the GT but we're thinking 2nd race bike 'just in case' plus the 2nd bike will be a little bigger and 29er as that's mostly the way the world is progressing. I'm not convinced he'll race it this year, but think of it more as a growing into type thing rather than a today thing.

We'll have a longer debate as to whether i end up buying the GT and putting the funds into the race pot and re-springing it and using myself on the big days.

Ah yes.... massively over-priced on there though. I was thinking £900+ the Status. Well that's what i've offered him anyway

Well we've been chatting and apparently it doesn't come with the Mullet back end after all, well not at that price anyway.
For the mullet+stock it's on pinkbike at £3500
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/3343223/

He'll do £1100 + Status for full setup or £950 with just 29.

There's also this one at £2800
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/3358329/

But I don't know if he'd be interested in a deal.

£3k to someone who can’t even be arsed cleaning the bike to sell it? That’d be a pass for me

I'm not going to hold that too much against someone. Dirt doesn't take £*** off. It's a bit crap to not bother but it's 10 mins work, that is, assuming he's not cleaned it after taking the pics

I get the feeling, reading between the lines, this is more of a "Dad's race bike" than Weeksy Jnr's backup rig really isn't it?

In which case just do it, the mullet kit's probably worth having and supports the case for it being Jnr's spare race bike...

Is it good VFM? Who knows anymore, it is a proper DH bike where the Status is a longer travel trail bike, so you'll have fewer excuses 😉

Can't be arsed cleaning it for selling pictures= can't be arsed doing stuff like bleeding brakes, doing bolts up, sorting stuff out

I've never bought a second hand thing that wasn't mostly cleaned for photos.

So I don't actually know if that's true or not!

I wouldn't start to rub the anodising off any cranks in less than 5 gritty 25 mile peak winter death slogs.

If you don't need it now, why not wait for a ridden for one season dh bike in Feb or so? Ex race bike, meticuiolsy maintained by someone who fixes odd noises as they might loose races.

Also dh bikes are cheaper in miserable weather. It's still nice enough there are people looking for a ride for the end of summer.

I'd give that one a miss until Feb, or wait for another one to turn up

Only for the first 2 weeks. After that it'd be sprung to his weight which makes it no use at all for me.
Whilst I'd swap a shock spring if that were all it needed, I wouldn't bother doing a fork just to enable me to use it. That's just too much.

I do think that £2000 for our Status is good for us, especially as I simply don't see him riding it at all. It's not where his head is at and I don't see that changing short term. I'd even argue that the Status as 'dads bigger bouncer' would make more sense as I can set that up in minutes. But the reality is, the Fuel is better for me and I like it more anyway.

So all in all, no, not really for me

I think DH bikes are a fairly tough sell any time of year, they're quite niche of course so a small market.

So I'm not certain I'd get a better vfm trade if I wait 1 week or 5 months. I might, but I could just as easily not.

I'd be tempted to move the Status on and then it will open up the bargaining power for the next bike.

That's coming from someone who has bought most of our bikes on impulse.

Last one a few weeks ago without seeing it and picked it up on return from our holidays.

If the photos haven't been updated since May I'd be a bit apprehensive.

Most bikes I've sold on Pinkbike have gone in a couple of days

It can hide a battered frame though. At the very least I’d want him to clean it before I viewed it.

On the flip side I've got some bargains on eBay that were dirty, a quick clean and they would have gone for 50% more. The dirt wouldn't put me off but I might want a bit of a discount because of it. I would be asking that there weren't any scratches/dents/cracks anyway as pictures can always mask a problem.

FORK

RockShox BoXXer RC 29, DebonAir spring, adjustable low-speed compression, adjustable rebound, short crown, 20x110mm thru-axle, 56mm offset, 200mm of travel

Well that opens up the discussion a little... air in the front end. It would mean a swap of spring on the rear for me compared to him, but that's 5-10 mins work, so not exactly massive. I expect i'd absolutely HATE the geometry... but it does mean i could at least find out the answer to that 🙂
