I've seriously caught the bug - the mtb is the workhorse, don't really clean it but keeps on going.

However the road bike, my wheels are around 1500g but have too many spokes... Omg mental illness or what!
Looking at the American classic aero 420. To go on the planetx N2a.

Please talk me out of it! I have £500 to spend.

Edit - and yes I know that doing 130miles a week (non commuting) on the road is now over due to winter.

Buy them and give me your old wheels for nothing.

I like spokey wheels, the more spokes the better.

ACs aren't known for their bearing life.. Does this make a difference?

Wait until next summer, you'll have a bigger budget.

Then keep the old ones as a winter set.

I was going to upgrade a couple of months back, heard the same about AC bearings. Holding off 'til summer for now.

If your wheels aren't broken and you've go a kid on the way get a decent turbo and take a few days unpaid leave dyer your paternity leave.

I'm going for the guilt angle, you did ask us to talk you out of them.

What wheels have you got? They don`t sound like heavyweights at 1500g.

American clasic hubs aren't that great, light but bearings don't last, I don't know how good the 420 rims are, personally I would stay clear of them.

Have you looked at the Mavic Ksyrium Elites ? I think they are pretty good, great quality hubs and rims.

I much prefer good quality hand built wheels with nice blingy hubs, but that's just me.

I've got Stans alpha 340 on no name hubs for Germany. 'Fun' I believe.
Wheels look terrible and braking is not as good as my old fulcrums racing 5's.

I have a good set of Alu rollers which I have started to use.

I want some thing light and semi aero - manly as I like the look for 30mm rims +

I bought new fancy road wheels.
Don't do it, you won't go no faster.
I constantly try to buy my way out of shitness, to no avail.

stans on german hubs are good wheels - spending a lot of money on deeper section would probably get you a set on a similar overall weight, and I'm guessing that your handbuilts will have regular spokes which are less problematic to replace

stick with what you have

spend the money on things that make you fitter, turbo's, holiday's, etc, riding is more enjoyable that way, new kit is nice but it doesn't make you fitter.

Those Stans 340's are about as light as it gets for a alu road rim, not the stiffest but good none the less. The hubs I know nothing about but I doubt will be that heavy.

I wouldn't but new wheels to use for winter as British winters are notorious for killing kit with salt on roads and rain just what wheel components don't like.
