Last night, on our usual Friday eve local rip around, i spotted a brand new bit of cheeky trail snaking off into the woods. "Ah HA"" though i, setting off down it. Having sent it down a 30foot 50deg root covered muddy bank without falling off(HERO), i then proceeded to catch a pedal on an unseen sniper root(ZERO), and go OTB in some style into a large bush. That on it's own, would have been ok, and a fairly soft landing, but unfortunately, that bush turned out to be the bush in which said cheeky trail builder had temporarily hidden his tools! So, i took a spade handle to the face, and now have a bruised jaw, stiff neck and whiplash, ouch......
So, what weird and unexpected things have you lot hit when out on the trails?? 😆
I will never know why I did this but I was playing about with the dials on the top of my front fork whilst pedalling along and I was bouncing the front testing how much it responded etc.
Whilst doing this, I slammed the front brake on. Don't know why, never will but I did.
Massive OTB and flat on my back with the bike bouncing off me.
I've somehow managed to hold on down trails way beyond my skill, but a small bunny hop in the Warehouse at work sent my pedal right into my shin.
4 holes and 2 gouges! Was a bit sore for a week...
A few years back I was having a great ride on Dartmoor, managed to stay upright going down the Widowmaker & generally having a ball.
Winched myself up Eylesbarrow Mine & was blatting along towards Nunns Cross enjoying the flow on flat ground, as it was a nice bright sunny day I looked across to the open moor & was soaking up the view ...... BANG the next thing I know the bike had disappeared beneath me & I'm lying on my back on the ground looking up at the clear blue sky 🙁
To this day I have no idea what went wrong or why I crashed on flat ground luckily the only injury was to my pride 🙁
binners can testify to this one but on a night ride in Rammy a few years back I had successfully negotiated a tricky ribbon of trail (Waugh's well) and was feeling quite pleased with myself for the way I'd ridden it with aplomb.
Less than a minute later on a dead straight, flat section of double track I went over the bars almost straight under binners' front wheel, breaking my thumb in the process (it still isn't right). I have absolutely no rational explanation for how that happened.
Not a random crash so much as an unexpected injury- out on Wednesday afternoon, on our way home after nice little five mile potter and I was practising the odd (rubbish) manual here and there and all of a sudden felt a 'ptoink' in my back. Here I sit, grounded since Wednesday with a crocked back that's nearly better (but not better enough) while the weather's lovely 😡
I ride round half of Glentress, helping coach a bunch of rather fast riding adolescents.
Only to have massive chain suck on the entry road outside the bike shop, leading to OTB and crushed plums...in front of 25+ in our group, half the shop and most of the population of the Tweed valley...
Innocently bimbling along a bit of trail in dappled sunlight near my house when BANG - I suddenly found myself on the floor with my shoulder in agony and feeling like I'm going to vomit with pain.
I'd completely failed to see a small-ish tree had fallen and got wedged diagonally along the trail by another branch.
Don't think I can embed Insta pics here sadly, but worth a click to see the results...
Unfortunately I don't have any strange crashes to share, only crashes as a result of dumassery. 🙁
Really dumb mistake here.
Went to a new place on my brand new bike (Pudeltown woods) at the car park met a young chap on something really not very noteworthy and he offers to show me round, ok off we go we do some fairly techy single track nothing to hairy and end up on a gravel road that has a steep drop hidden to my right he turns in between some bushes and I just follow there is a near vertical drop to a plank bridge a bout 6/8 feet above a bomb hole, little narrow bridge and i collide over the bars and over the side of the bridge i go he is off in the distance when I wake up I have 3 crushed vertebrae.
learnt an important lesson that day about knowing trails and trusting people.
I had a crash and the first thing I knew about it was when I woke up in hospital on an operating theatre with a surgeon standing over me and my top lip being pulled by a piece of string. No idea how it happened as I was only out for a gentle ride with my sister. I can only conclude that my mouth hit my exposure light then the floor as I had a perfect arc shaped cut all the way through my top lip. I also had stitches in my chin I guess from hitting the floor. Random. I couldn't remember what I had done for the previous couple of days which the doctor told me is the the brains way of protecting me from the trauma. He said I might one day remember what happened but a few years on and nothing.
mine had a reason , was messing with the camera strapped to my ankle and ended up on my back for no seeable reason lots of cuts and bruises .
playing back the vid in slow mo flat rock kicks up and takes out the back wheel .
