I have an old tacx turbo trainer that got used occasionally with my road bike with its QR skewer.
I now have a different bike with thru axle 142x12.
Is this what I need to set it up ? If so that’s a lot of money for what it actually is 😬

Tacx have very good documentation online and have been very helpful when I have been in touch.

Do you know the trainer model? What is the thru axle type?

I suspect you need one of these but you need to know more about the trainer and frame/ axle type to select the right one. The PDF on the page gives compatible trainers and full dimension information.

I've just been through this whole thing in the last couple of days - I travelled back through South Africa for work the other day so having to isolate for ten days and all I have here is an old tackx blue motion turbo and a through axle bike.

I'm currently using a bodge as seen here:

Had all the bits sitting around, and seems to be solid. I've put in a good few sessions on it taken everything apart and checked for damage and it all looks good. You may need to make some adjustments depending on your through axle type.

If you have trouble getting hold of the tacx axle, you may want to have a look at...
