Current config is 3x10 with an xt m780 triple set and m786 long cage, non-clutch mech.

I plan to run a 32t rf nw ring with my current 11-36 and potentially fit either a 30t or one of the cassette extenders to give 40 or 42 subject to my legs!

Making sense so far? Some questions I have...

- which position on the crank should the single ring go?
- will I need shorter chain ring bolts? If so, what sort?
- will I need to re space my cranks?
- is switching to a clutch mech advised if I don't want to die?

All advice greatly received.

Depending where you ride 11-36 and nw is fine. You can always keep the granny on and manually change before the really steep stuff which i did for a while...although i run a 40t on the ht and a 42t on the fs now. I have the same cranks as you and ran them in the middle position. A GS clutch mech is advised. Probably need shorter bolts tho.

Clutch is not needed in my experience but it does depend how and where you ride. Im on a hardtail, have ridden around bumpy Gisburn twice since changing to a thickthin 1x10 setup and the chain has not come off.

Another way of looking at it: I have a clutch mech but normal chainring on 2x10 and haven't lost the chain yet. If you get a clutch and not the NW you'll be able to go back to having a granny if 1x10 doesn't suit - and still enjoy the benefits of chain retention

Thanks for the replies so far.

Regarding the clutch mech, I will prob just try it and see if I suffer from dropped chains.

For chain ring bolts, any suggestions as to what to buy? Something like this? http://www.uberbikecomponents.com/view-product/Uberbike-Singlespeed-Chainring-Bolt-Kit-7075-Alloy---Black

I just went into my LBS and bought some generic single speed chainring bolts for even less ,£7 I think, but they had no fancy logo. More importantly they were Allen and not torx bolts which I find easier as I have better Allen keys than those for torx.

i did exactly this last night
32t narrow wide on front
42t one-up on the rear,
took off the front derailleur and shifter ( now i can thread the dropper cable through the channel that took the front mech cable)
i havent put a type 2 / clutch rear derailleur on yet, i will try that and see first.
good luck 🙂

No clutch mech for me yet. I use a Superstar Laser chain guard and have had no issues with a standard mid cage XT rear mech. I have a NW chainring ready and will install with a clutched mech when the current mech dies.
