got a solaris max, not used it much. been offroad twice on it.
going in for surgery tomorrow, so gonna have a lay off, then once riding i cant see me needing such a capable bike.
think my offroad jaunts are gonna be getting more sedate.
selp preservation being the reasons.

so, possible reason to buy a new bike suited to easier offroad pottering.
something to take a rack, a 2'' tyre, nice low gearing, low maintenance, no drop bars.
or fit a rigid fork on the solaris?

If I was in your position I’d go custom, speak to frame builders you like and explain what you want, choose the one your gut tells you is right.

Something from Tout Terrain Ton

For instance... http://www.en.tout-terrain.de/bicycles/amber-road/

You can configure it with Alfine, Rohloff or standard 3x10 gears.

Also available in a XXL size - with suitable tubing.

Fit a semi slick large volume gravel type tyre to the solaris and see how it rides. Just becsuse it has space for big tyres doesnt mean you have to have them.

I had a not dissimilar quandary when planning my Hebridean Way trip (except I had 2.8-3.0" tyres B+ wheel set).

I would have been much easier on a gravel type bike but I ended up with a new 29er wheelset instead (still not got a rigid fork yet... 😳 ).

I'm failing to see what a rigid fork and more appropriate tyred up SolarisMAX wouldn't offer over a new bike, especially as you already own the bulk of it...

If you had to be 'rad' to ride one I'd have had to flog mine ages ago 😆

Been eyeing the Pinion (Xpress) version myself, but I can't justify it at the moment.

Good question. I was going to suggest something from Surly.

Me too

Ton my view you be to just ride the Solaris more sedately (I am an expert in this technique on my Bfe and Covert - tips available), swap out tyres (and forks if you must)

I have a Solaris (the original one). While I do enjoy fun stuff, in reality it does more sedate things like bikepacking on fireroads and gravel tracks

I run that as a hardtail as I have another rigid bike. You should probably just stick a rigid fork on it (or even just ride it as is, suspension fork will make it 'comfy' and you can just up firm it up)

Solaris can do sedate.

You sure you're not just in "wanting a new bike" mode?

Always thought of a solaris as an old mans bike in the first place.
What is it you find too exciting about it?

😕

This, just put some more air in the fork, what’s the max psi ? Then some narrow tyres at higher pressure and bingo ! You have the “rigid” experience of why do my shoulders and back ache so much 🙂 ?

Read all the replies. Cheers all.
Think I am going to try the solar with some 2'' slicks.
It is very comfy and hopefully I may get some mono back once I am healed.

And take it off again.
And sell it.
And then go looking for a new one.
etc
etc
etc

(See also; handlebars, ergo grips)

Hopefully you get mojo rather than mono

asked this before but got no reply ..why did you give up on the Ogre Ton? i use mine as an easy going multi purpose machine . Changed to carbon fork as the original was too stiff/jarring and 2.35 super moto tyres . Or ..if you want a comfy ride that gives a workout over shorter distances how about a Pugsley or similar...probably one of the only bikes you haven't owned if I'm not wrong!

Bill, gave up on it because i had 2 other bikes that did things better for me......then.
the genesis tourer now fits like a glove after some gearing and bar changes.
and the solaris is just the ideal kind of bike for the off road riding i could do. hopefully i will be able to get back to the same level.

the ogre did not excell at anything specific i needed it for.
heavy for touring, a pain if you got a rear wheel puncture and not overly comfy. quite harsh to be honest. did a day in france on hardcore compressed rubble trails, and it was terrible.

i have decided to keep the solaris for now to see what my outcome from my new hip is.

fingers crossed.

cheers fella's.
feel ok so far. feel like i have played in my hardest rugby game ever, on concrete, against concrete opponents. and then gone straight in the gym and lifted lots of heavy weights, using my hips and back.

a nice hurting, if you get what i mean. 😆

Sounds like you’re healing up well then. How long before you can get on the bike?
