my wifes bike has Halo vapour wheels. rear has a superdrive freehub. it is on it's way out. makes a loud bang every so often. i removed the cassette, and there is some play in the freehub and i can feel it missing now and again.

it is 5 years old, so owes us nothing.

my question is, can i replace it with a non superdrive version, and less than half the price ?

anyone have any idea ?

cheers.

The cheaper ones may be soft alloy if they are anything like the Chosen freehub I had which I had to bin after getting chewed up by a steel cassette.   It was very very similar to a Supadrive freehub which I considered for a replacement.  I did wonder if made in the same Taiwan factory as Chosen are one of the outfits making them for other brands.

Apparently so. Although I haven't done it myself! Tredz and Merlin sell the RSP/Pro Build version. It is as mentioned a pretty soft metal.

The worst thing about that freehub is the fact they don't sell the part that wears out, a few pence worth of tiny piss pot flappy seal!

Check the drive ring isn't trashed before buying a new freehub as it has really fine teeth, 120 points!

What usually happens is water gets in because the flappy seal is worn and it corrodes the pawl springs so 1 or 2 or all 3 pawls don't spring back fast enough, hence power get's transferred through less pawls than it should. Add some heavy duty cranking on 1 or 2 pawls and you can imagine what happens!

mate, i think that is the problem. if i spin the body back and forward like back peddling and then forward, it bangs/cracks loudly every so often. this happens when my wife is riding too.

Check it first because it can be quite noisy when it's only engaging 1 or 2 pawls at a time. When all 3 hold down it just spins and there is no drive at all until a pawl bites.

The hub and freewheel bearings might be buggered as well! It's a smash the lot out job and actually quite easy. Obviously a new freehub has new bearings in it so less to do!

a new custom rear wheel from Spa cycles is only £120.

and i cant be arsed with spannering no more so that may be the way to go and only a bit more expense.

thanks for your time mate.

Yep, I ended up just going with a new wheel from Spokesman Wheels.  Stans rim, novatec hub and sapim spokes - very nice!
