Can't let Hampshire get to 25 pages without a response from good old sussex by the sea.

I am getting a bit regular at stammer, give me some sussex alternatives.

It does depend on what you're after. I've ridden round whiteways a few times and its good as there is plenty of Singletrack and the majority of what I rode seemed fairly flat so you can go pretty quick. Not sure I enjoyed it as much as I do Stanmer, but then maybe I didn't do the best bits (plus I rode there from Shoreham across the SDW on super tacky high rollers so was pretty knackered by the time I got there).

Most of my rides prior to joining you lot on a Sunday were mainly xc rides across the downs between Shoreham, storrington, steyning and the dyke with the odd Singletrack descent thrown in, but they were few and far between.

I tend to ride the steyning trails a lot as they are awesome and also because I can get there with 45 minutes pedalling from my front door. Really need to get over to Stanmer again, anyone care to show me around sometime?

In the winter, particularly after snow, when the South Downs mud is stodgy and slubby (i.e. unrideable) I like cx'ing or hardtailing up through the country lanes of the High Weald around Warningland, Handcross and Colgate with off road excursions into St. Leonards Forest.

I'm in the northern end of Sussex admittedly (Billingshurst), but personally I always just go to the Surrey Hills, done a few rides down to the Downs, and along the SDW, it's quite 'old school' riding - a lot of bridleway bashing, and largely impassable in winter! Ought to try Whiteways as that's not a million miles away.

davosaurusrex:

Brighton MTB Thursday nights - meet at 7.00 by the main University entrance - good place to start.

Welcome also to come on a Sunday - Stanmer Tea Rooms at 9.00 nearly every Sunday (this is not a Brighton MTB ride just a group of friends.

Various loops taking in Black Cap Lewes, Ditchling, Plumpton, Kingston Ridge. Really like Lewes to Cuckmere via Firle, Coach Road, Alfriston and then along coast to Telscombe or Rottingdean and back into the Downs to Lewes.

I often ride Jevington end of SDW, looping in Friston Forest trails and Lullington Heath. Lots of nice ascents and descents, 360 views and never far from a decent pint from the Long Man Brewery.

Eastern end of Sussex:

Friston Forest
South Downs between Brighton & Eastbourne
Stanmer Woods

Heading West:

Steyning Woods
Whiteways
Kingley Vale
Rogate DH
SDW/Monarch's Way
QE2 Park

North Sussex:

Tillgate Forest
Surrey Hills (just outside Sussex but probably the best trails in SE England)
North Downs

Take you pick 😀

Davosaurus, happy to show you a clean pair of heels around Stanmer with my local turf advantage! 😉 I like Wild Park a lot too, much more air time there, along with select other steep wooded hillsides tucked away around here - visiting them gives purpose to slogging miles out across the Downs...

darkcyan/cgg - may well take one of you up on those offers, always time poor with 3 young kids but shall try and wangle a pass from the missus while the trails are still dry!

Wild Park - haven't ridden there in years. Used to go there with Al who worked at Freedom bikes, he may still work there, lost contact with him too. Was always fun, short but sweet. Wild Park, not Al. OK, Al too.

If anyone wants a tour around the Steyning trails just shout. Not my trails to show off as it's Steyning MTB who have built them. Always feel a bit guilty but like I said short on time. If any of them are reading great work lads! Some properly good trails in there now. I can think of at least 6 superb singletrack descents with next to no chance of meeting a walker on within a small area, problem is I always end up riding there. Not a bad problem to have in terms of South Downs riding I guess

The best riding in Sussex and Hampshire is in Surrey.

Freedom still on George (?) Street? Tell Al that Mick's mate Dave from Sunshine Cycles days says hi! Will drop in at some point but rarely get into Brighton these days, more's the pity.
